This activity is an online simulation that covers adding fractions. The


simulation I chose focuses on adding fractions with like denominators, adding
fractions with unlike denominators, finding the lowest common denominator
(LCD) of a set of fractions, and using fraction tiles to model addition of
fractions.

Pedagogy

Before beginning this activity, the teacher will need to create an account with
explorelearning.com. There is a 30-day free trial option. After creating an
account, the teacher can search through the find gizmos button on the top
tool bar and then filter by gizmos by academic standard. This allows you to
search through specific curriculums by state and grade. The simulation I chose
is VA 3rd Grade SOL 3.7: The student will add and subtract proper fractions
having like denominators of 12 or less (Fraction Tiles).
When a teacher signs up, they are automatically given a class enrollment code
and a printable handout to make it easier for students to locate and sign up
for the class. Instruct the students to sign up by following the directions on

the sheet.

Once the student is logged on, click on the lesson called Adding Fractions
(Fraction Tiles). Next, under Lesson Material in the bottom right corner, click
on the document named Student Exploration Sheet. This worksheet will be
filled out throughout the simulation. Now click launch gizmo and this will take
the student to the simulation. Follow the instructions on the worksheet and
answer all the questions. When the student is finished with the worksheet,
they can turn it in through email or in person.
