Dear Reader,

My portfolio comprises of three different pieces of worka literacy narrative, a research

paper, and a portfolio reflection essay. I view my portfolio as a work-in-progress, but also as a
demonstration of my constant progression and learning. My desire to discern my paradigm shift
in thinking led me to explore defining moments in my life. It was these experiences which served
as inspirations for each project.
Throughout the entire course, I placed a emphasis on improving my
understanding of literacy as I felt that it would contribute greatly to improvements in my writing.
With this goal in mind, I tried to maximize my learning by exploring different and unique
approaches to each project. Despite the varying objectives of each project, I found insightful
lessons from each project which helped to develop my understanding of literacy. The three
projects were strikingly similar in the way that many lessons I had learned from a particular
project were applicable to another project. As such, I was able to discover new interpretations of
literacy by molding my portfolio to integrate all projects together.
Throughout the literacy narrative project, I focused on evaluating my personal
history to understand its influences on my views of literacy. It was an opportunity for me to
speak about sentimental and personal events through a more intimate medium which would not
have been appropriate for other academic modes of writing. This led me to narrate stories in
three different videos. Each video has a different focus but provides for a new lesson on literacy.
In my subsequent discourse community project, my passion for singing
drove me to research on music. Due to my inexperience in conducting research, there are still
many apparent flaws in my paper which I have yet to address. In spite of this, it was exciting to

experience and get a grasp of research in its purest formthrough observations and evaluations.
This meant utilizing different methods of research to provide me with the best learning
outcomes. I also included some useful insight from this project in my final literacy narrative
video.
The portfolio reflection essay is a culmination of my learning throughout the entire
quarter. It is an embodiment of my attitude towards learninga continuous process shaped by
my personal experiences. Apart from learning the more technical aspects of writing, I was also
interested in the role of social processes in ones learning. Reflecting on my writing was an
unfamiliar but useful process which helped assess the effectiveness of my writing choices.
In order to maintain the progressive element of my work, I request for the portfolio to be
viewed as a single piece of work, in which all components are interrelated and integrated, and
that the components of my portfolio be viewed in running order. Most importantly, I hope for my
readers to be able to follow me on this journey of learning and benefit from many positive
experiences along the way.
