HISTORY OF AWANTIPORA: ORIGIN:

Awantipora called as Vuuntipor in Kashmiri is a place, about 30km-28km from

Srinagar on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway along the bank of the river Jhelum. This place is famous
not only as an ancient Capital city of Awantipora founded by Raja Avantivarman, but also for its two
imposing temples, now in ruins, built by him.
King Avantivarman of UTpala dynasty of Kashmir founded the ancient town Awantipur in
A.D853-883.This town is famous for Archaeological monuments namely Avantisvamin temple
Avantipur; left by Raja Avantivarman. The District is economically and educationally backward till 2011.
But now educational efforts are growing up day by day. Planned efforts are needed for its speedy integrated
and balanced development only 63% were found literate during the 2011 census. In olden times Agriculture
is the main occupation of people.70% people are engaged with this activity and the remaining 30% are
engaged with other occupation like in transporting system i.e. (Tipper, Truck drivers and owners etc).
Awnatipora was a place of Pilgrimage in olden times.
When there was no wheeled traffic and people used to travel on foot from Srinagar to
Anantnag ,there were professional masseuss, who used to massage peoples to remove their fatigue. This
was done without using any kind of oils. They were called Motshah. People gathered round a huge
hubble-bubble and smoke till sunset. This was called Wontpur.
Presently, there are about 46 villages in Awantipora sub-district.

AWANTIPORA CONNECTED WITH DISTRICT ANANTNAG:
Anantnag is located to the South of Awantipora .And between Awantipora is linked with Bejbehara
too.

TRAVEL TIME: and you can reach Anantnag from Awantipora in 47min keeping in view the
traffic jam.

The means of transportation generally buses ,tavera,sumos and matadoor .Generally, people
prefers to go through tavera as this mean of travelling is time saving having fare of Rs 40/head.

AWANTIPORA CONNECTED WITH TRAL VILLAGE:

Tral is situated to east of Awantipora .
Distance from Awantipora Kharmod is nearly 11.8km,and we have turn left on NH1A on
Jammu-Srinagar National highway.
It takes approximately 24 min to reach there safely.

There are three stands for the vehicle for Tral; viz near University links, Kharmod and
Police Station Awantipora.

RAILWAY STATION AWANTIPORA:

Railway Station is situated 4Km from the main stand of Vehicles. It takes about 10min to reach the
station by means of Train service Awntipora is linked with many parts of Kashmir and Banihal area
of Jammu region.
Railway is situated in village Malangpora through Padgampora. Fare from Awantipora is Rs 10/. And Fare of train is Rs 15/.
