Man sells firewood to pay wife's medical bills
An Internet campaign has come to the rescue of an 80-year-old man in the USA who was reduced to selling
firewood on the roadside to pay for his wife's medical bills. Octogenarian Kenneth Smith spent hours a day
selling kindling for $5 a bag. He started last year and was then helped by his wife of over 30 years, Helen,
who was dying of lung cancer. Tragically, she lost her battle in October and Mr Smith was left with crippling
hospital fees, which wiped out his life savings. A local woman, Jessica Pittman, saw Mr Smith and posted a
Facebook message urging people to help him. Her post has been shared over 9,000 times and motorists
have stopped their car to give Mr Smith some cash.
Ms Pittman's kind deed encouraged Mr Smith's son to go a step further and set up an online appeal. He
created a page at the website GoFundMe and donations soon came flooding in from all corners of the Earth.
The online campaign raised $20,000 in three days. Ms Pittman told the BBC that she had "no clue" her
actions would prompt such generosity. She said: "Although it will not lessen the heartache of losing his wife, I
am thankful it will at least take a little worry off of his plate and help him make ends meet." Mr Smith said he
has been "overwhelmed" with the response. He added that even though his wife wasn't by his side, he still
feels her presence, "because she's looking down on me," he said.

Text 2 (0.5)
Military Officers Face a New Evaluation
Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is leading important changes
following recent scandals involving high-ranking officers. This is part of training and development programs
for generals and admirals. They will include new courses to train the security detail, executive staffs and
even the spouses of senior officers.
1
Saying he was disturbed about the misconduct issues, General Dempsey said that evaluations of
top officers needed to go beyond the traditional assessment of professional performance by superior officers
alone. He said that he had decided the changes were necessary to assess both competence and character
in a richer way.
You can have someone of incredible character who cant lead their way out of a forward operating
base because they dont have the competence to understand the application of military power, and that
2
doesnt do me any good, General Dempsey said. Conversely, you can have someone who is intensely
competent in the skills of the profession, but doesnt live a life of character. And that doesnt do me any
good.
General Dempsey said that regular professional reviews would be transformed from top-down
assessments to the kind of 360-degree performance evaluation, which includes feedback from

subordinates, peers and superiors. For the new training programs, he said that while it may be impossible to
prevent infractions, most officers need to be reminded of the rules and regulations on a routine basis.
Teams of inspectors will observe and review the procedures of commanders and their staffs. The
inspections will not be punitive, but will provide a periodic opportunity for general officers to understand
whether, from an institutional perspective, we think they are inside or outside the white lines, he said. In
addition, new programs will be instituted to ensure that a commanders staff, and a spouse, are fully aware of
military regulations.
In my 39 years in the military, I have learned that you are not a profession just because you say you
are. You have to earn it and re-earn it and re-evaluate it from time to time, General Dempsey said.

Text 3 (0.5)
Global protest grows as citizens lose faith in politics and the state
The demonstrations in Brazil began after a small rise in bus fares that triggered mass protests.
Within days this had become a nationwide movement whose concerns had spread far beyond fares: more
than a million people were on the streets shouting about everything from corruption to the cost of living to
the amount of money being spent on the World Cup.
In Turkey, it was a similar story. A protest over the future of a city park in Istanbul snowballed too
into something bigger, a wider-ranging political confrontation with prime minister.
If the recent scenes have seemed familiar, it is because they shared common features: viral, loosely
organised with fractured messages and mostly taking place in urban public locations.
Unlike the protest movement of 1968, or even the end of Soviet influence in Eastern Europe in 1989,
these are movements with few discernible leaders and often conflicting ideologies. Their points of reference
are not even necessarily ideological, but take inspiration from other protests, including those of the Arab
Spring and the Occupy movement. The result has seen a wave of social movements sometimes short-lived
from Wall Street to Tel Aviv and from Istanbul to Rio de Janeiro, often engaging younger, better educated
and wealthier members of society.
In Brazil, the varied banners underlined the difficulty of easy categorisation as protesters held aloft
signs expressing a range of demands from education reforms to free bus fares, while denouncing the billions
of public dollars spent on stadiums for the 2014 World Cup and the Olympics.
1
Its sort of a Catch-22, Rodrigues da Cunha, a 63-year-old protester told the Associated Press.
On the one hand, we need some sort of leadership; on the other, we dont want this to be compromised by
being affiliated with any political party.
As the Economist pointed out, while mass movements in Britain, France, Sweden and Turkey have
been inspired by a variety of causes, including falling living standards, authoritarian government and worries
about immigration, Brazil does not fit the picture, with youth unemployment at a record low and enjoying the
biggest leap in living standards in the countrys history.
So whats going on? This is a very peculiar moment, SaskiaSassen, a sociology professor at
Columbia University, New York, told the Observer. She argues that one distinguishing factor is that many of
the protest movements of the past decade have been defined by the involvement of what she calls the
modest middle class, who have often been beneficiaries of the systems they are protesting against, but
whose positions have been eroded by neoliberal economic policies that have seen both distribution of wealth
and opportunities captured by a narrowing minority. As people have come to feel more distant from
government and economic institutions, a large part of the new mass forms of dissent has come to be seen as
an opportunity to demonstrate ideas of citizenship.
Sassens belief that many of the recent protests are middle-class-driven appeared to be confirmed
overtly in the case of Brazil, at least.
