Welcome to Hindu Dharmacharya Pratishtan

Temples Protection Movement welcomes the formation of Hindu Dharmacharya Prastishtan


with the following stated objectives explained by the Pujya Swamijis through the Press Note
issued on Nov 24th 2016 and subsequent press conference addressed by them.
The Sanatana Dharma or Hindu way of life is undergoing tremendous amount of onslaught
presently. The Vedas are being distorted; traditional rituals are being mocked at; the Deities
of the Hindu Pantheon being portrayed perversely. Large scale attempts are being made to
break down the Hindu Community.
To break down this race is like trying to break down the entire country which has thousands
of years of revered legacy. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Atak to Cuttack, this country
had followed Religious Tolerance, Peaceful coexistence and universal brotherhood because
of the Hindu way of life. The present attempts by the vested interests are increasingly forceful
to destabilize the country by destroying this ancient Dharma.
Hindu Dharmacharya Pratishtan is born to protect the masses following Sanathana Dharma
from the attempts by these forces to destroy our Religion and to detach our people from
our Dharma. The Pratishtan respects the Freedom of Religion as enshrined in our Constitution.
To oppose and thwart the devious attempts of the vested interests through legal recourses
is one of the methods of the Pratishtan.
With a great objective, the Seers of three Major Sects of Hinduism namely Adwaita,
Vishishtadwaita and Dwaita have formed this as a common platform. This Pratishtan is the
result of the initiatives in this direction by His Holiness Pejawar Swamy Sri Vishwesha Teertha,
Mantrlayam Sri Raghavendraswamy Matham Sri Subudhendrateertha, Sri Tridandi Srimannaryana
Chinna Jeeyar Swamy.
The Hindu Dharmacharya Pratishtan will develop a master plan to counter these forces
and implement the same under the auspices of Sri Paripoornananda Swamy (Sree Pitham),
Sri Tridandi Srimannarayana Chinna Jeeyar Swamy (Jeeyar Integrated Vedic Academy), Sri
Subudhendra Teertha Swamy) Sri Raghavendra Matham, Manthralayam).
The like-minded Saints, Peethadipathies, Mathadhipaties, Intellectuals, Social Activists,
Organisations will all be roped in to work together as a Mass movement. The Dharmic
Literature essentially required for Every Hindu will be taken to the rural level. The Rights
enshrined in our Constitution for Freedom of Worship and Religious Propogation also comes
with permissible limits. These Limits will be made known to people who are in the dark presently.
Propogation does not mean Religious Conversion by force or by other means. Give inspirational
programs to masses through the Media. Encourage the people fighting for Protecting our
Dharma. To critically analyse the literature available with regard to the other Religions, to
train the people for protecting our Religion and to counter the misinformation going on in
the rural areas. Any other important activities from time to time.
Temples Protection Movement believes that Temples are the very foundation of our religion
and the most effective way to minimize Religion conversion is to ensure that our temple system
is strengthened; rural temples are revived, temples are decommercialized and depoliticized
with minimal Government interference in their administration through an effective and autonomous
Dharmika Parishad. Traditional Archakatvam service should be strengthened and trained to
communicate the tenets of our religion effectively at the grass root level and concrete steps
be taken to revive our ancient Sanskrit language.
Temples Protection Movement will work closely with the newly formed Hindu Dharmacharya
Pratishtan to ensure that Temples protection is focused upon at the time of preparation of
the Master Plan of the Pratishtan and 'VAK' will continue to highlight the programmes of the
Pratishtan from time to time.

ACCEPTOR OF ACCOLADES

It was way back in 1989. I was delivering


Ramayana discourses in the Advaita Sabha in the
temple town of Kumbakonam.
At that time, the 85th anniversary of Mannargudi Veda
Patasala was celebrated in a grand manner and I
attended the vidwat sadas which was held there as
a part of the 85th year celebrations. His Holiness,
the 44th Jeer of Ahobila Mutt, who built the world
famous Rajagopuram of Sri Rangam and was also
a student of the Patasala as a boy of age 8 to 10
years, also graced the sadas.
In that sadas, HH the Azhagiya Singar put forth
a question to all the Vedic scholars seated in front
of Him, Though there are many names of the Lord,
the name Govinda is well-renowned and revered
as a unique one. But, in the eternal Vedas, we find
names like Vishnu, Vasudeva and Narayana. Does
the name Govinda occur anywhere in the Vedas?
I replied, Yes! The name Govinda occurs with
a slight change as Govida in the Veda!
But it is Govida and not Govinda. His Holiness
observed.
I said, Yes. But the meanings of both the words
are same.
HH Jeeyar seemed to accept this as he went
on to raise other questions.
I had kept in mind the fifth mantra of the fourth Anuvaka
called Aprathiratha of the sixth Prasna in the fourth
Kanda of the Taittiriya Samhita while giving this answer.
The mantra is:

The famous commentator of the Vedas,
Sayanacharya, has explained the meaning of this
mantra as follows by grouping all the words in the
second case and taking them to qualify the word

F (giving saamaanaadhikaranyam to all the words


in second case):
Mountains are called Gotras. In olden days, all the
mountains had wings and had the ability to fly. They
thus caused a lot of sufferings to human beings
and other creatures. So Indra cut off their wings
with his Vajraayudha (thunder bolt) to relieve the
people of their sufferings. Since Indra had cut the
wings of the mountains, he is called Gotrabhit. Go
means earth; one who attains the earth (owns it by

control) is called Govida. As Indra holds Vajraayudha


in his hands, he is called Vajrabaahu. Since he
defeats his enemies without giving them even a small
place to reside, he is described as Ajma Jayantam.
The Veda also adds, Pramrunantam Ojasaa, meaning
Indra tortures his foes with his strength.
This can be summed up as Vedas describing
Indra thus:
Indra is the one, who has Vajra in his hands, who
had cut the wings of the mountains, who attains
the earth, torments his enemies with his strength
and defeats them without leaving them even a small
place to live in.
I had later given a detailed interpretation for
this mantra in my Tamil commentary on this portion
of Vedas which has been published under the title
Vedam Porrum Divyadesangal.
Here I had grouped a few words of the second case
to refer to Indra and a few other words of the second
case to refer to Krishna taking the mantra to describe
Lord Krishna, the Govinda as conqueror of Indra (in
Vaiadhikaranyam) in the following way.

The Lord Govinda, who defeated, the cutter of the
wings of the mountains and the carrier of Vajraayudha,
by his strength and caused trouble to him, is the
actual Indra which literally means the one possessing
immense wealth.
A doubt may arise here. How can the word
Govida in the Vedic mantra be construed as Govinda?
There is a rationale behind this.
We all know that Lord Krishna dissuaded the
people of Gokula from observing ceremonial rites
to Indra and convinced them to perform the same
to the Govardhana hill. Annoyed by this act of Krishna,
Indra continuously poured rains for seven days so
as to destroy the entire Gokula.
At that time, Lord Krishna held the Govardhana
Mountain itself as an umbrella for all those seven
days and saved His devotees. Startled by the might
and valour of the Lord, Indra admitted his defeat
and sought the mercy of the Lord
He then performed Govinda Pattabhisheka
a coronation ceremony to the Lord. Swami Desika
uses the word Gotrabhit to denote Indra while
describing this coronation scene in Yadavabhyudayam:

Indra submitted the name Upendra to the Lord.


Sri Parasara Maharishi depicts this incident in Vishnu
Purana:

The great preceptor Koorathazhwan appears to


suggest another origin of the Noopura Ganga with
lyrical minds eye in his Sundarabaahu-stava:

Upendra normally means Assistant of Indra. (As


Upa-rashtrapati (Vice President) is to Rashtrapati
(President) of India.) Can Indra give the name Assistant
of Indra to the one that had defeated him?
Actually, Indra wanted to give the title as
Upareendra (Upari + Indra) which means Superior
to Indra. But out of panic, he stammered and
mispronounced it as Upendra.
Since the Lord had protected all the cows of Gokula,
Indra gave the name Govinda to the Lord which
means protector of cows. This is mentioned by sage
Suka Brahmam in Srimad Bhagavatam:

Just like he stammered while uttering
Upareendra, while presenting the name of Govinda
also, Indra had stuttered and mis-spelt it as Govida.
Anyhow, people perceived it correctly as Govinda
and the great grammarian Paanini Bhagavan also
coined a sutra to derive the name Govinda.
But the Veda has employed the original word
Govida as spelt by Indra.
Incidentally, the word Govinda has another
meaning too, i.e., one who reaches water or dwells
in water.
We have discussed about the Lords incarnation
as a Swan that dwells in water in the anecdote on
the previous name Suraananda.
Some devotees of the south wanted to have
darshan of the Lord as a swan in the splash of water
just like He gave darshan to the Devas after retrieving
the Vedas. Those devotees approached sage Agastya.
Agastya directed them to the holy hill of
Thirumaaliruncholai (Vanagiri) The Hill of Alagar on
the Sukla paksha dwadashi of the Tamil month of
Aippasi to see the Lord in a splash of water. The
devotees obliged.
On that day, the Lord Sundarabaahu takes a
holy shower in the waters of the Noopura Ganga.
When the Lord as Trivikrama measured all the worlds
with His Lotus Feet, Lord Brahma washed the Feet
of the Lord and the holy water from His Anklets
descended down to this holy hill as Noopura Ganga.

As the Kinnara women from the heavens came


to the holy hill to have darshan of the Lord and sang
the sweet verses composed by Nammazhwar on
the Lord, the rocks and stones began to melt because
of the charm and lure of the verses and they flowed
down as the river Noopura Ganga.
Usually, in many of the holy shrines of the
Lord, the Utsavar (form of the Lord taken in
procession) is not dipped in the water; only the
Snapana Moorthy (Selvar -representative of the
Utsavar) is dipped in the water. But in the case of
the Lord Sundarabaahu, the Utsava Murthy Himself
takes a bath in the Noopura Ganga, the scene of
which resembles the Lords appearance as a Swan
in the splash of water when He gave darshan to
the Devas after retrieving the Vedas.
The devotees felt elated to have such a darshan
of the Lord and they thanked the sage Agastya.
At that juncture, tribal women also came and
sang hymns on the Lord in the Tamil rhythm called
Kurinji. The mystic saint Periyazhwar describes this
scene in his Periyazhwar Thirumozhi. I am giving
a Sanskrit version of this for the convenience of
those of us not knowing Tamil

Thus, the Lord, who accepted the praises on
Him by the sacred songs of the Vedas and the holy
hymns by the Devas, also accepted the songs of
tribal people sung in their local rhythm.
That is why He is called Govinda the
addressee and acceptor of accolades by one and
all.

prayers may keep the form of Lord Visa Balajee
of Chilkoor and chant this name. He will surely accept
our prayers and bestow the gifts that are legally

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century


incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is
based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura
Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief
Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha
and Dutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol of
Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved by
four Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim
invaders. After several adventures the two boys, with the
help of Chenchu tribes found the idol along with one
Kodava who protected the idol for more than eighteen
years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri. Lord
Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King
Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that place
patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas.
Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the
Vijayanagaras mulvoy province reaches Tirumala in
search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises
Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord
Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which enabled Vallabha break
his fast unto death. Vallabha and Datta turned to
Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety of
Manjari with her neighbors after the death of
Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the
expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas
as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an
impending attack by Vijayanagar army. The disguised
Vaishnava leader was no other than the Camphor merchant
who revealed that he was the head of Intelligence
army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the
Vijayanagar men managed to kill all their pursuers
and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which
Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the behest of
Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the
Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescue
Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace and
ensure here safety. Meanwhile, as a first step the Vijayanagar
army mission w a s u n d e r t a k e n t o c o n q u e r
Sambuvaraya of Rajagambhira. Kancheepuram was
conquered and Kampana Rayas army advanced to
Rajagambhira mountain conquered it and killed the Raja
Gambhira king. The Madurai princes was rescued.
Later, Vallabha and Datta are entrusted with the task
of escorting Princess Madhurangini to Pandya kingdom.
During this long journey, Vallabha expects a heartto-heart chat with the princess to express his love. Meanwhile
when the convoy comes to Mulvoy kingdom Vallabha
gets information that many of the small kings who were
under Sambuvarayas have pledged allegiance to
Vijayanagara emperor which includes his mother land
Sathyamangalam. This has significant influence in
shortening their journey. Enroute Vallabh visits his mother
along with Datta. While Vallabha and Datta along with
the princess were on their way to final destination, they
were attacked by two intoxicated elephants. Vallabha
rescued the princess and both ended up rolling down
into the deep forest where they met an unmarried couple
from Muduvai tribe. The princess had a nice conversation
with Vallabha about the Muduvai tribe practices. Dutta
who came back finding Vallabha warned him not to

fall in love trap but Vallabha could not stop thinking
about Madura. Meanwhile they restored their journey back
to Pudur. Madura was excited as she was nearing her
destination. When they reached Pudur, Madura rushed
to see her father Kulasekara Pandiyan. He was weak
and ill. Both Vallabha and Dutta stayed there for 2 days
under their hospitality, and felt sad thinking the past glory
of the king and his kingdom. When it is time for them to
leave Vallabha felt very sad and bid farewell to Madura
with heavy heart. Vallabha suddenly went back hearing
a call from Makaravizhiyaal and she gifts a royal Pandyan
ancestral sword with gems embedded to him. Vallabha
and Makaravizhiyaal meet again and express their love
towards each other. Makaravizhiyaal proposes marriage
but Vallabha requests time till he reinstates Lord
Ranganatha to Sri Rangam. Meanwhile, Lord Ranganatha
has been brought to Gingee by Gopanna the commander
of Vijayanagar army belonging to Mulvoy province.

It is apt here to pause to know more about the Lord


Ranganathas temple at Gingee and about the history
of the location of the story called Singavaram. This
was written or rather documented by Yelangadu
Sathrayagam Gingee Rajaguru Nallan Chakravarthy
Srinivasachariar swamy who was the main trustee
and priest for this temple. His ancestors is said to
have been appointed by the great NarasimhavarmaII of the Pallava dynasty. This small village known
as Singavaram is about 3 km from Gingee in the route
to west Malayanoor. 300 meters from this village there
is a hillock called Singamalai. On this hillock is the
temple for Lord Ranganatha who is in a Uththana pose
(just getting up from the serpant bed of Adishesha).
This place is on the southern tip of Thondaimandalam
and is well connected from Arcot, Vandavasi, Dindivanam.
This place is surrounded by River Shankarabharani
or also known as Varahanadi and is having green
cultivable lands. Inside the temple there is a nice
pushkarani (temple tank) called Chandra pushkarani.
One can get down here and perform a mantra snana.
In the east of this pushkarani is peepul tree which
is the sthalavruksha and a balipeetham. There is a
big mantapam inside where Lord Ranganatha stays
during utsava time and there is also Desikansannidhi
inside the temple. There are further sthalavrukshas
lemon tree and Nandiyavattai tree before the entrance
of main sanctum sanctorium guarded by Dwarapalakas.
Inside the Lord of Lords can be seen sleeping in a
ready to get up pose on the serpantadishesha with
a lotus on his umbilical chord where Lord Brahma is
instated for creation. He is adored by Sri devi and
Bhudevi. One cannot take darshan of the total Lord
from one entrance due to large length. Therefore there
are three entrances. The sanctum sanctorium has
Utsava idols of Lord Ranganatha with his consorts.
This is a uniqueness of this temple. The Lord here
is seen to give Abhayam (protection) to Mahishasura
Mardini. This can be seen from the left most door.

After coming to Thiruvolakkam mantapam from there


via the northern entrance, there is a 4 pillared mantapa.
Lord, just like Sri Rangam comes here during Vaikuntha
ekadasi after coming out of Vaikunthadwaram. There
is a stream flowing on the mountain called
Lakshmeetheertham.. There are insciptions which says
that during Pallava time this was part of a province
in Pallava empire known as Singapur province and
this place was the capital of the Singapur province
called as Singapuram. This is also known as Vishnu
Gingee and the place west of this place is called
Melai Gingee or old Gingee and current Gingee along
with capital and taluk office is known as Siva Gingee.
If we walk from this place 300 mts in south west
direction we can reach the foot of the hillock where
there is a 4 pillar mandapam. On to the right hand
side there is a dilapidated mantapa and entrance.
People say that this was the old entrance to the hill.
When we prostrate before the steps and go up the
hill we enter into the main mantapa known as Lords
walking Mantapa. We can also see small temple there.
During 13th century (much before the time of Lord
Ranganathas travel) when there was Muslim invasion
(many happened in the past), it is said that devotees
brought the Lord Varadarajas idol of Kanchi into this
temple and protected it from being captured by the
invaders. Later they shifted him to Udayaar Palayam
for protection and only after things were normal and
restored they took back the idol to Kanchi. They
instated a Moolavar vigraham for regular worship and
also Utsava Vigraha later which can also be seen
now. (in the north side of the temple- Varadaraja
sannidhi). The Lord of Kanchi stayed till 1310 at
UdayaarPalayam later was taken back to Kanchi..
This temple and the town (now a village) was renovated
by the great Pallava King Narasimha Varma-II and
hence the name Singamalai and Singapuram or
Singavaram. There is a story that people say here
which is part of the sthalapurana.
The great Pallava emperor Narasimhavarma II was
ruling with Kanchipuram as his capital. He was a
great devotee of Lord Ranganatha like the Chera
emperor Kulasekhara Alwaar. He could not take up
the travel to Sri Rangam due to his duties as king.
He was always thinking of Lord Ranganatha day and
night and always used request him to grant an
opportunity to have his darshan at Sri Rangam,. Such
was his devotion that he was having an idol of Lord
Ranganatha at his palace and was daily worshipping
it with Nandiyavattai flowers from his garden. Suddenly
he could not find the flowers in the tree. He felt that
some one is plucking the flowers inspite of tight security.
To catch hold of the thief he was hiding himself in
the palace garden one night. He saw a beautiful device
boar (varaham) in the garden which was plucking the
flowers of nandiyavattai and eating them. He took
his bow and arrow to shoot down the varaham. The
Varaham started running in southerly direction. He
was carrying in his long teeth a Nandiyavattai plant,

a lemon plant and a peepul plant and was running


away very fast. The king also ran after it without a
sense of direction. The divine boar entered a cave in
a hill and the king followed it. He found a nice pond
near the cave. He could not see the divine boar. He
felt thirsty, entered the pond, quenched his thirst and
when he came back it was close to dawn time. He
saw the peepul plant below, he replanted it. Near the
cave entrance he also saw the lemon tree and the
Nandiyavattai tree. He planted them too. As he entered
the cave there was a divine radiance and he found
the Lord Ranganatha idol with Sri Devi, Bhu Devi and
all his parivara deities there with providing Abhayam
to Mahishasuramardini. He forgot himself and felt as
if he has taken darshan of Lord of Sri Rangam. He
felt that he heard a voice ordaining him to build a temple
for the Lord and worship there itself. Following the
ordinance he built a temple and worshipped which stands
even today. He built a sannidhi for Lord Ranganatha,
Lord Rama and Mahishasura Mardini there. He then
constructed a town called Singavaram and he named
the hill as Singamalai. He also did poojas to the three
plants as they are Sthalavrukshas which showed way
to the Lord. Even today we can find these three
Sthalavrikshas generations being worshipped there
Every year this Lord has Adhyayanothsava. There were
Brahmotsavams every year and nityotsavam like Sri
Rangam .Due to lack of interest in management and
interference from government officials of Independent
India the Brahmotsavams have stopped for this Lord,
which is a shame by itself. The Lord used to go to
Puduvai during Maasi Month and there is a sacred
thirumanjanam there for the Lord at the ocean. The
Vaahanautsavams used to happen in Puduvai for three
days. In Chakraavaram tank, shankarabharanam river
and chakratheertham during Maasimakham and
Teppotsavam were happening to this deity in the past.
The divine boar which led Narasimha Varma dug the
ground during the journey and there was a river which
is known as varahanadi. This is worshipped as
punyatheertham by devotees there. This temple has
the same prominence as Sri Rangam. It has seen various
invasions and we can see now many portions of other
surrounding temples have been broken by the invadors
like Venkataramana temple, Krishna temple etc. For
many years after the invasions this temple was also
dilapidated and was not having regular poojas.
After several years, When the Vijayanagar forces captured
Thondaimandalam, Gopanna was made the chieftain
of Gingee. He started renovating all the temples and
also renovated the Ranganatha temple. He requested
his guru Kethandipatti Nallan Chakravarthy lineage person
Sathrayagam Seshadri Swamy to re-take possession
of the temple management and perform the poojas
to the temple. An idol of Swamy Desika was installed
by elders during Gopannas reign and a temple built
by him for his preceptor near the premise of Lord
Ranganatha temple where Swamy Desikan receives
honours every time when Lord Ranganatha (Gingees

Ranganatha) goes on procession and returns. It is


said that Swamy Desika took this route from
Sathyakaalam to travel to Srirangam after taking Darshan
of Lord Varadaraja in Kanchi and Ranganatha in Gingee.
From the sannidhi of Swamy Desika, the Rangavimanam
of the temple is visible. Opposite to this sannidhi of
Swamy Desikan it is said that there is an underground
passage which is now closed. This is the passage
which was used by royal people to come down from
Gingee palace to have darshan of the Lord.
When Sri Rangam was attacked (which we saw at
the beginning of this serial) by Uloogh Khan and army
the devotees under the leadership of Pillailokacharya
and Swami Vedanta Desikan protected the deity in
the sanctum sanctorium by putting stone screen, the
Utsava Lord Ranganatha (hero of this serial) was taken
in procession to safety. As the readers know that Lord
Ranganatha travelled through various places including
Maheshapattanam, Jyotishapuram, Thirmaliruncholai,
Kochi, Kozhikode, Punganoor, Thirunarayanapuram
etc. for small periods of time and finally spent in Tirumal
forests for over 18 years before he was brought to
Tirumala. All the people who protected the Lord have
passed away except Swamy Desikan. As Gopanna
was disciple of Swamy Vedanta Desika , he got
inspiration from him to restore the Lord of Ranganatha
to Sri Rangam.
Taking the permission of Satrayagamswamy, Sri
Gopanna brought the Lord Ranganatha from Tirumala
to Gingee and performed all the poojas due to the
Lord of Sri Rangam here with all the pomp and glory.

Later, he took the help of Tirmanathoon Singaperumal


who was a great devotee to provide intelligence
information about Madurai Sultan who befriended the
sultanate people. This played a major role in the victory
of Vijayanagar over Madurai which is going to be part
of this serial now and will be described in detail later
how Gopanna restored the Lord of Sri Rangam to
Sri Rangam as the readers are going to read further
story here.
Many kings of later times also worshipped the Lord
of Singavaram Lord Ranganatha. These include Chera
kings, Vijaya Nagara Kings, Nayak kings, Chatrapathi
Sivaji Maharaj and Raja Desing. Mughal kings also
worshipped this deity according to inscriptions. Later
even the Nawab of Arcot worshipped the deity and
gave lots of lands and villages (copper plates exist
for this) to the family performing poojas to the Deity
with a desire to ascend to Vaikuntham- Lords abode.
With this enjoyment of history of Sri Ranganatha temple
of Gingee let us go back to our story where we were
following Sri Gopanna now who was in a vaikasi month
returning from pooja in the Ranganatha temple at Gingee
where he has now brought Lord Ranganathas idol
belonging to Sri Rangam which was there at Tirumala.
Two grown up young men approached him as he came
out of the temple along with an old woman. One of
the young men on seeing Gopanna approached him
and said Swamy! and prostrated before him. The
old woman was also standing with greeting hands
in the form of Namaskar. Gopanna saw the young
man and said enough Vallabha! Now get up!.

Ahobila Mahatmyam By Sage Narada to various sages
as appearing in Brahmanda Purana, Keshetrakanda

The Ahobilakeshetramor Garudachalamis known as
Veera Kshetram in rememberance to the Lords one
of the six greatest qualities Veeram meaning valour.
Sri Nrisimha fought the mighty army of Hyiranyakashipu
single handedly and without any weapon. He had only
his nails as his weapon. This place has become very
dear to Lord Narasimha and in this keshetra there
are revered sages living even today. These are sages
who do not have desires, fear and who have controlled
their senses and who all the time reside under the
lotus feet of Lord Narayana are living here. Among
the sages, so only drink water, some only take in air,
some who dont have hunger, some who has Jata,
some who are clean shaven including head, some
are great in Vyakarana and some are learned in all
vedas and vedangas and all of them even today worship
the Lord here and focus on making him happy. These
rishis are always thinking about salvation (moksha)
and they done want anything other than that. From
Travelling from Garudachalam a 100 yojana distance
in the southerly direction what ever rishis live, they
all are highly respectable and revered. In the northern
side in a 2 yojana distance there is a sacred place
called Nandi ashramam. This is the place where
Nandikeswara, who is the vehicle for Lord Siva did
severe penance on Lord Siva, won his heart and became
the chief of the Pramada army of Lord Siva. Lord Siva
also made this his abode. He ensured that this place
is named after Nandi. Further north of Nandi Ashramam
we have Sri Sailam which is difficult to reach in those
days. This has Lord Siva residing in it. Lord Siva even
today is giving blessings here to his devotees. There
is a river called Krishna running across. The river washes
all the sins of human beings in this world and is the
border for this mountain range. The small moutains,
water falls, sidhdhashramas, siddhas, gandharvas and
kinnaras are highly revered and they all have divine
powers due to Lord Narasimhas blessings.
Sage Narada paused here. The sages listening to them
asked the following question.
Oh! Revered sage, where is the purest part for this
Garudachalam because of which the Garudachalam
became revered? How did this big mountain which
is quite vast attain purity only in one corner of it.
To this sage Narada replied. In this Earth which is
very dear to Lord Sri Hari and which comprises of 7
main continents, 7 main oceans and 7 main hilly
ranges, there is a continent called Jeerna Dweepa
which is the Karma Bhumi. In this JeernaDweepa to
there is a Khanda (Sub-continent) called Bharatha
Khanda. In this sub continent, to the south of Mount
Meru and to the south of River Krishna Veni there is
a place called Ahobilam which is a kshetram. In this

Ahobila Kshetram there is a famous place called


Garudadri. As the all pervasive lord can been seen in
one place also during his Avataras, the Garudadri also
can be conceived in that form because the Lord
incarnated here. This place is full of lots of variety of
trees and creepers. It is a home for many different
birds and animals. Here one can find rare medicinal
herbs, champak trees, Asoka, palm, coconut, Tilaka,
Punnaga, Neem, Kadapa, dates, Tazhai, jack fruit, Padari,
Mango, Tamarind, Paripatra, Sarala, Krouncha, Vila,
Tippili and Chandan trees. One can find several flowering
trees and fruits here. Lots of birds such as peacocks,
parrots, honey bees, wild animals such as tigers, lions,
leopoards, wild boar, elephants loiter in this mountain.
The mountain has poisonous snakes, karanda birds,
deers and other somber animals too. The hill is full
of tribals with dark complexioned bodies with sharp
arrows and bows. They go around with their lady
companions. This mountain is full of great sages who
constantly meditate on Lord. The mountain is also a
play station for Divine damsels (Apsaras). Even after
spending thousands of years Lord Brahma also cannot
describe the full potential and power of this mountain.
Where am I then?
In the southern side of this mountain there is a mountain
called Venkatachalam. This is all the time adorned
by Nityas, Mukthas and Mahatmas. The Lord always
resides on this mountain. Such is the greatness of
Garudachalam which I have now said to you all.

To this the sages asked Sage Narada. Oh! Revered
sage, why did this mountain get the name
Garudachalam?
Oh! Sages, I will tell that story to you. Once Garuda
the son of Sage Kashyapa decided to do penance for
a righteous cause. He went to seek permission of
his father sage Kashyapa. He said Oh! Father, what
is the best way to practice by which everyones desires
can be fulfilled?. Who in this world can fulfill all desires
of all. Please let me know oh! Father cum Guru and
wellwisher for me. I am here in the ocean of samsara
without a person other than you to lift me up. I request
you to provide me with the updesa with which I can
get uplifted said Garuda. On hearing this Sagfe
Kashyapa said In this world all those who are attracted
by worldly attractions should think and meditate on
Lord Vishnu. Only Lord Vishnu can help them get out
of this Samsara Sagara. Therefore please do pooja
to Lord Sri Mahavishnu. Even Lord Brahma worships
Lord Vishnu and only then he gets the capacity to do
creation. Who ever wants Punya and wants lot of wealth
he should perform puja to Lord Vishnu. Devendra also
performed pooja to Lord Vishnu to get back his swarga
and kingdom of devas. Therefore if you meditate on
Lord Vishnu and perform pooja he will give you all
the best items in life and later will take away your hard

In a U-turn, Kerala now wants women


to be allowed inside Sabarimala temple
The Kerala government told the Supreme Court on Monday
it was in favour of allowing all women inside the
Sabarimala temple, reversing its earlier stand that
defended the entry ban.
Women aged between 10 and 50 (menstrual age) are not
allowed in the famous Sabarimala Ayyappa temple
because the deity is celibate (Naisthik Brahmachari).
The Travancore Devaswom Board that manages the
temple is defending the practice of keeping out women in
that age group as part of its age-old tradition.

The Kerala government, too, had filed an affidavit in the
court on July 11 favouring the ban. The ruling CPI(M),
however, took a U-turn the next day, saying it would submit
a fresh affidavit seeking entry for women of all ages.
We want women of all ages to be allowed in Sabarimala...
If there is a difficulty in allowing women of all ages, the
Travancore Devaswom Board should bring it to the notice
of the court, party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan
said.
The case, which will be heard on February 20, is being
watched closely as the court in earlier hearings had said
tradition cant trump the Constitution and discriminatory
customs pose a danger to gender equality.

Assembly polls, another affidavit was filed on behalf of the
state government. This affidavit, filed by the UDF
government months before the 2016 Assembly polls,
withdrew what it called the erroneous stand of the LDF
government.
The UDF government backed the ban on entry of women,
arguing that the restriction on entry of women in the
menstrual age group cannot be tested on the ground of
fundamental right to equality since it involves essential
and integral part of practising religion, which includes the
right to exclude persons.
In May, the LDF government returned to power but it
supported the change in stand by the state government,
backing the prohibition against women. In an earlier round
of litigation, the LDF government was in favour of entry of
women and now it has decided to defend the temples
decision, the state governments counsel had informed
the court in July.
But on Monday, the LDF government opted to go back to its
views of 2007. Its lawyers submitted that they would rely
on the original affidavit filed nine years ago and not on the
additional affidavit filed by the UDF government in February
2016.
The bench took note of the LDF governments
submissions and recorded the objections of senior
advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the Travancore
Devaswom Board which manages the hilltop shrine, that
the state cannot afford to alter its stand as per their
convenience.
The bench, which has now fixed the matter for hearing on
February 13 next year, said the governments stand is not
final as it will take a decision after deliberating upon various
aspects including the constitutional provisions with regard
to gender equality.

be debarred from entering the temple. Can there be a

whether the matter requires to be referred to a five-judge
Constitution bench.

attendance. The Archaka Welfare Fund Trust (AWFT) has


favoured keeping the biometric attendance to these priests
on hold until service rules and conditions are framed. With
this, close to 3,000 priests will be exempted from the
biometric system.
According to information, there are 141 temples classified
as 6(a) institutions whose annual income is Rs. 25 lakh
and above; and 784 temples classified as 6(b) institutions
whose annual income is between Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 25
lakh in the State. The priests in these temples are working
with a consolidated pay of about Rs. 10,000 a month. In
fact, the minimum remuneration of Rs. 5,000 a month
was paid to the archakas until November last year.
The Endowments Department increased the
remuneration to religious staff to Rs. 10,000 a month in
view the price rise. The AWFT at a meeting on October 10
passed a resolution that the rules may be finalised keeping
in view of certain responsibilities of the priests to attend
their duties irrespective of timings during auspicious days.
The biometric system may be postponed till
comprehensive service rules are framed. The meeting,
however, resolved that the biometric system can be
implemented in major temples.
The priests have been contending that the government
decision to implement the biometric system would
adversely impact their morale as the government has not
taken any steps to frame the service rules and conditions.
The apex court in 1997 had directed the government to
frame rules. The issue, however, has been pending with
the Chief Ministers office since then, says AP Archaka
Samakhya organising secretary Peddinti Rambabu.
Mr. Rambabu explains that the service of priests stretches
beyond normal working hours. Further, there is no
substitute arrangement whenever a priest intends to go
on a work or on leave due to illness. The priest himself
has to find a substitute before he proceeds on leave or
falls ill, he says.

PLEA TO IMPLEMENT SC ORDER ON DAILY PUJA FUND IN TEMPLES


Temple Protection Movement has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement the recommendation of
Supreme Court for creation of a daily puja fund scheme for every temple.
Movement convenor M.V. Soundarrajan, in a statement, said it will be in tune with the demonetisation exercise initiated
by the prime Minister as a first step in the fight against parallel black economy and towards a less cash society and
eventually to a cashless society. He urged the Prime Minister to take suitable steps to implement the Supreme Court
order to encourage temples slowly migrate to a cashless model in the long term and the devotees to donate through the
mobile phones too.
The Supreme Court-appointed committee visited Chilkur Balaji temple in 1996 and made a recommendation to follow
the Chilkur Bajaji temple model to deposit the amounts given by the devotees in the interest-yielding fixed deposits on
permanent basis in the name of deity. That amount was used to pay remuneration to Archakas though there is no
remarkable income to the temple.
The Supreme Court accepted the committee recommendation and directed the Endowment Department Commissioner to work out the modalities and modules of donations floated as and when donations were received. The amount
may be invested in fixed deposit schemes, preferably of nationalised banks and part of interest amount could be used
for remuneration to archakas and remaining for other welfare purposes, Dr. Soundarrajan said. He said the Daily Puja
fund scheme of Chilkur Balaji temple was a success with over Rs.10 crore amount collected and temple transitioned
to complete cashless model with no cash donations accepted. Thus, the temple does not provide any avenue to black
money holders to deposit cash in hundis with the mistaken premise that it would rid them of the sin of hoarding such

Demonetisation: Temples across India receive high currency notes as donations


There is a rush of devotees and donations at temples across India ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi
announced the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. The Hindu reported that Venkateswara
temple in Tirupati received around Rs 22.9 crores in the last eight days. The report suggested as the deadline for
exchange or deposit of old currency notes approaches, this sum is likely to increase.
According to the Business Standard, donations have gone up by almost 50 percent at Mumbai's Siddhivinayak
Temple since 8 November. Narendra Rane, chairman of the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust, was quoted as saying,
"The average weekly collection is Rs 46.23 lakh. But in the last few days, the temple has received Rs 59.44 lakh."
The Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha is another temple has been receiving a lot of Rs 500, Rs 1,000 currency
notes as donations in the last one week, reported The Times of India. According to the report, on 10 November, the
temple received Rs 3,66,360 as donation which is much higher than their average collection.
As this Firstpost article noted that the Maharashtra government had issued a circular on Wednesday asking all
religious bodies, NGOs and charitable trusts to maintain a daily balance sheet and deposit donations received, in
banks, on a daily basis.
Moreover, the Charity Commissioner's office in Maharashtra has asked the temple authorities at several popular
pilgrimage centres to open donation boxes only in the presence of authorised personnel due to the apprehension
that the cash could be used by black-money hoarders to get rid of their ill-gotten wealth.
The decision was also taken to avoid the inflow of unaccounted for currency notes through temple donations, a
senior officer at the Charity Commissioner's office told PTI.
Earlier, a senior minister of the Maharashtra government told PTI that hurried donations made to nearly 100
temples and trusts and sudden spurt in cash reserves in nearly 1,000 cooperative banks and credit societies in
the state after Centre's decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes have come under government's scanner.
"Some people have tried to secure their unaccounted cash by donating it to temples by taking its management into
confidence and making receipt of such donations as anonymous donors," the minister said.
According to The Times of India, the Income Tax Department has issued notices to many temples in Ayodhya, Uttar
Pradesh. The temple trusts have been asked to present their balance sheets.
