Transition: Students sitting at their seats to begin.

Set Induction: Raise your hand if you have participated

in a relay race before. Today, we are going to be having
a writing relay race to help us review before I pass out
the quizzes!
Learnable Piece: Before we split up into teams, lets
review our verb tenses:
-Past: something that was done in the past/completed
already. Typically add an ED to the end of the verbs.
-Present: Something that is currently happening or
ongoing. The verb typically with an ING ending. May
need to add another constant before adding the ING.
-Future: Usually will or is going to before the verb,
which is in its basic/regular form.
Check for understanding:
Thumbs up if you feel comfortable moving on to the
relay race!
Presentation of New Material/Directions: For this
game, we are going to have two teams split up on both
sides of the room. I am going to show a verb on the
projector and one of the three tenses we have been
working on. The first person from each team is then
going to run (carefully) up to the white board and write a

complete sentence using that verb in the designated

tense. The first person to complete their sentence
accurately gets a point for their team. Spelling and
punctuation count!
Check for understanding:
Pat your head if you understand!
Some SAFETY PROCEDURES:
Speed walk! NO RUNNING.
No pushing the other team
Make sure all back packs/chairs are out of the
way
Watch where you are going so you dont bump
into the wall or tables

Check:
So are we going to run up to the board?
Are we going to push other people?
Are we going to say mean things to the other team?
Sportsman ship!
Transition: We are going to count off by 2s. Now, I want
the 1s to form a line starting in the back of the room.
Now the 2s can form a line just like team 1.
Activity: (please describe the location, structure, and
protocols that you will use to organize and conduct your
lesson)
-Students will get into 2 teams. They will then line up at
the back of the room next to the other team (with at least
an arms length apart). There will be a line (tape or an
object) where they must line up behind so the starting
points are even.
-I will put a slide up on the projector that has a verb and
one of the three tenses (past, present, or future).
-Teams cannot cross the line until this slide is up.
-The first person from each team will then walk/speed
walk up to the white board at the front of the room and
write a full sentence using that verb in the appropriate
form/tense. The first team to finish writing their sentence
accurately (punctuation, spelling, etc.) gets one point for
their team.
-The team with the most points at the end wins!

_____
Minutes

Possible Modifications:
-There may need to be a tiebreaker if after all the slides
are done, the points are even. If this is the case, I will

have one tiebreaker round.

-If there arent enough dry erase markers, I will have
them come up to the board and write the answers on a
piece of paper (they have to put their pencil down or say
done so I know who finished first).
-To make it more difficult, before the people from each
line are able to run to the board, they must do jumping
jacks (the # depends on how many letters are in the
given verb- for example, the word is run, they have to
do 3 jumping jacks before they run to the board)

Great work! High five two people and then sit back at
your seats so we can begin the quiz.
