Course: DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS-II
Course Code: 11MESDCDM2

Duration: 3 Hours
Max Marks: 100
Date: 31.08.2013

Instructions
1. Answer ANY FIVE full questions.
2. Any missing data may be suitably assumed.
3. Use of design data hand book is permitted.
UNIT-1

1.a) The section of a crane hook is trapezoidal whose inner and outer sides are 90mm and
25mm respectively and has a depth of 116mm. The centre of curvature of the section is
at a distance of 65mm from the inner side of the section and the load line passes through
the centre of curvature. Find the maximum load the hook can carry if the maximum
load the hook can carry if the maximum stress is not to exceed 70MPa.
b) Interference of machine parts necessitated the use of a steel member as in Fig 1(b). If a
load 1kN is applied, determine the maximum tensile stress.

2.a) Design a helical compression spring for a maximum load of 1OOON and for a deflection
of25mm. the maximum permissible shear stress for spring wire is 420N/mm2
Modulus of rigidity is 0.84x10 5MPa and the value of spring index is 6.
b) An automotive leaf spring is to be designed to consist of 10 graduated leaves and 2 full
length leaves. The spring is to support a central load of 5kN over a span of 11 OOmm,
with the central band width of 1OOmm. The ratio of total depth of spring to its width is
to be 2.5. Determine the width and thickness ofleaves limiting the maximum equalized
stress induced in the leaves to 350MPa. Also, determine the initial gap to be provided
between the full length and graduated leaves before the assembly and the load exerted
on the band after the spring is assembled.

UNIT-2

3.a) A cone clutch with semicone angle 6.25 is to transmit 7.5kW at 900rpm. The width of
the face is half the mean radius and the normal pressure between the contact faces is not
to exceed 0.09MN/m2 Assuming uniform wear and coefficient of friction between
contact faces as 0.2, determine the main dimensions of the clutch and the axial force
required to engage the clutch.
b) A band brake shown in Fig 3(b) uses a V-belt. The pitch diameter of the V-grooved
pulley is 400mm. The groove angle is 45 and coefficient of friction is 0.3 . Determine
the power rating.

UNIT-3

4.a) Design a spur gear drive required to transmit 55KW at 800rpm of the pinion. The speed
ratio is to be 3.2:1. The teeth are to be 20 full depth involute. The static stress of
pinion and gear are 193.2MPa and 138.3MPa respectively.

5.a) Determine the cone pitch angles, pitch diameters for the following bevel gear pairs.
ii) for shaft angle 14 7
i) for shaft angle 77
The module is 5mm and the number of teeth on pinion and gear are 14 and 42
respectively.
b) Design a pair ofbevel gears to connect two shafts at 60. the power transmitted is
25kW at 900rpm of pinion. The reduction ratio desired is 5:1. The teeth are 20 FDI
and pinion has 24 teeth. Check the design for dynamic and wear consideration. Select
cast steel pinion for which the static stress is 137.34MPa and cast iron for gear for
which the static stress is 83.39 MPa. Assume medium shock with 8-10hrs/day.

UNIT-4

6.a) Derive Petroffs equation for coefficient of friction for highly loaded hydrodynamic

journal bearing.
b) A lightly loaded journal bearing has a load of lkN. The oil used is SAE 60 and mean
effective temperature of operation is 40C. The journal has a diameter of 50mm and the
bearing has a diameter of 50.5mm. The speed of journal is 15000rpm. The ~ratio is
limited to 1.2. determine the coefficient of friction and power loss in friction.

UNIT-S
7.a) Select a V-belt drive to transmit 10kW of power from a pulley of200mm diameter
mounted on an electric motor running at 720rpm to another pulley mounted on
compressor running at 200 rpm. The service is heavy duty varying from 10 hours to 14
hours per day and centre distance between centre of pulleys is 600mm.
b) A 20mm, 8x19 steel wire rope is used with a hoisting drum of lm diameter to lift a load
of 20kN. The depth of mine is 800m and the acceleration is 3m/sec2 Determine the
number of ropes required using a factor of safety 5. Neglect the weight of skip. .
