Dear Dr. Bruce,
To be successful in this course, it was necessary to improve my writing style so that I would be able to
accomplish each of the six student learning outcomes (SLOs). I have completed each of the SLOs, and
for evidence, I have put together a portfolio consisting of a revised group charter, a peer review, and this
cover letter. With these three examples of work, it can be seen that I have learned how to write using the
six SLOs.
The first assignment that I included in my portfolio was the revised group charter. Dr.Bruce was to be the
intended audience for this charter, so it was decided that using a formal tone throughout the charter
would be most appropriate. This awareness of who my audience is and what level of formality is needed
shows my rhetorical focus (SLO 1). In the charter, another persons work was utilized, and in order to
ethically cite these sources (SLO 2), the works, along with their authors, were acknowledged in the text
as well as in bibliography at the end of the document. The information within the group charter is
organized effectively (SLO 4) by using headings, indentations, and bullet points in a way that makes the
entire document easier to follow. This group charter was a collaborative effort between group members
(SLO 6) to establish a clear and agreed upon set of operational guidelines. The language used for these
guidelines was concise, appropriate, and fair so that everyone could agree on them (SLO 5).
The next work that I chose to include within my portfolio is a peer review that was done for another
group's proposal and email to iFixit. Since the audience of this peer review was other classmates,
informal language was used, but it was still appropriate and concise (SLO 1 and 5). Because of the
concise and informal nature of the peer review, complete sentences were not always used in this
document so that the reader could quickly and easily identify the corrections that needed to be made.
The last work that is included within my portfolio is actually this cover letter. The purpose of this cover
letter is to analyze each of the assignments within my portfolio and demonstrate how they satisfy the six
SLOs. Being able to provide specific examples to support my claims made this a more effective and
persuasive work (SLO 3). This cover letter is organized by discussing each assignment individually
instead of discussing each SLO individually (SLO 4). This method of organization prevents from having to
reference back and forth between assignments while reading. This document was mostly written
individually, but there was a peer editing session that helped improve it (SLO 6).
These three documents have been submitted to show that I have grown substantially as a writer. I feel
that by mastering the six student learning outcomes of this course, I have become stronger at writing in a
professional setting.
Regards,
Alex Ku
