Process Note
When writing this essay I would write what I was thinking and then delete the sentence
because it was too biased towards another candidate. I was very frustrated while writing this
paper because I couldnt say something about one candidate without being biased towards
another one. I would rewrite the same sentence six or seven times before getting a sentence
without being for one candidate too much. I ended up deleting my whole paper 3 pages in
because I felt I needed to restart this paper with a different mindset. Once I cleared my mind of
all the media about a certain candidate i really looked at what each were saying. Once I did this
my paper just started writing itself. The hardest part throughout this essay for me was writing an
unbiased paper. Do you think I did a good job at being unbiased in this paper?

Trump vs. Clinton Rhetorical Analysis
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the
United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of
the United States -Presidential Oath of Office
Holding office of The President of The United States is among the highest honor one can
hold. It has been four years since the last world of debates. Now the time has come for
Presidential candidates going after each other to bring out the worse in the other person. Each
side trying to sway people into voting for them. Each candidate uses rhetorical devices to grab
their audience's emotions, try to appeal to their logic and ethics. These are known as Ethos,
Logos and Pathos. The Republican nominee is Donald J. Trump a businessman who runs
multi-billion dollar companies. The Democratic nominee is Hillary Clinton, the current secretary
of state. In each of the nominee's party acceptance speeches these running mates appeal to the
people who support them.
On July 19, 2016, Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican nomination. On July
21, 2016 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, Donald Trump gave his Republican
nominee acceptance speech. Throughout Trumps whole speech he uses Ethos, or the ethical
appeal, means to convince an audience of the authors credibility or character (Ethos, Pathos, and
Logos). Trumps use of ethos makes him want to sound as a credible source and is worth
listening to (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos):
I have visited the laid-off factory workers, and the communities crushed by our
horrible and unfair trade deals. These are the forgotten men and women of our

Pfeiffer 3
country. People who work hard but no longer have a voice. I AM YOUR VOICE.
I have embraced crying mothers who have lost their children because of our
politicians put their personal agendas before the national good. (Trump)
Trump is telling voters that he has gone out and has held people in his arms, has gone
around around The United States of America to see what he would change if he became
president. He is showing his audience that he is credible source. Trump is saying that he is worth
listening to because he will work on your problems. Trump does an exceptional job at getting his
audience to support him. Clinton also uses ethos, she uses it to show that she is more credible
and worth listening to than Trump.
On July 27, 2016, Hillary Clinton is accepted as the Democratic nomination. On July 28,
2016 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hillary Clinton delivered her
acceptance speech. Clinton uses ethos to make her audience trust her more than Trump. She
wants to show her supporters that she is the most trustworthy choice, and that they should instill
their trust into her.
Well, we heard Donald Trumps answer last week at his convention. He
wants to divide us from the rest of the world, and from each other. Hes betting
that the perils of todays world, and from each other. Hes taken the Republican
Party a long way from Morning in America to Midnight in America. He
wants us to fear the future and fear each other. Now we are clear eyed about what
our country is up against. But we are not afraid. We will rise to the challenge, just
as we always have. (Clinton)

Pfeiffer 4
Clinton does a great job at focusing on why her supporters should trust her and invest in
her and not Trump. Both presidential nominees pull at the audience's heart strings to try to get
them to side with that presidential candidate.
Trump opens his speech with make his audience appeal to their emotional side, this is
known as pathos (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos). Together, we will lead our party back to the White
House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. But we will also be a
country of law and order. Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The
attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. (Trump) This
tactic he used is known as pathos, the emotional appeal, means to persuade an audience by
appealing to their emotions (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos). Trump uses pathos to grab his audience
and to have them truly listen to what he is saying. He uses examples of all of the cop shootings,
the terrorists that have threaten our country. Trump does an outstanding job at using pathos so
his audience knows that someone cares about what is happening on the streets of our cities, they
have someone who is willing to put an end to it, someone that they can trust. Starting a speech
with the use of pathos really grabs your audience's attention. Hillary Clinton uses pathos but not
in the same way Trump did.
Clinton uses pathos to appeal to the family and friend side of her audience.
Thank you! Thank you for that amazing welcome. And Chelsea, thank
you. Im so proud to be your mother and so proud of the woman youve become.
Thanks for bringing Marc into our family, and Charlotte and Aidan into the
world. And Bill, that conversation we started in the law library 45 years ago is

Pfeiffer 5
still going strong. Its lasted through good times that filled us with joy, and hard
times that tested us. (Clinton)
Hillary then goes on to thank the President, Vice President, First Lady and Bernie
Sanders. She uses pathos to appeal to her audience just not in the same way Trump did. Clinton is
going towards her audiences home life, showing them that just like you she has family that
supports her in what she is doing. She thanked the President to show that they have a friendship
to show that she is willing to do for America what he has. Clinton wanted to instill trust in her
audience so she thanked everyone for what they have done for her. Both Trump and Clinton then
go into appealing to their audiences logical sides.
Appealing to an audience's logical side is another rhetorical device that authors use to
woo their audiences. This rhetorical device is known as logos, the appeal to logic, means to
convince an audience by use of logic or reason (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos). Trump uses logos to
make his audience think about all the terrorist attacks that are happening and how to end them.
To protect us from terrorism, we need to focus on three things. We must
have the best intelligence-gathering operation in the world. We must abandon the
failed policy of nation-building and regime change that Hillary Clinton pushed
Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria. Instead, we must work with all of our allies who
share our goal of destroying ISIS and stamping out Islamic terror. This includes
working with our greatest ally in the region, the State of Israel. Lastly, we must
immediately suspended immigration from any nation that has been compromised

Pfeiffer 6
by terrorism until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place.
(Trump)
The three points that Trump points out make logical sense to his supporters, in order to
put an end to terrorism steps must be taken. Trump puts into logical order how he plans on
ending terrorism. Clinton uses her logos in the job department.
Clinton uses logos, the appeal to the audience's logic (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos) about
the job market and what she will do to fix the unemployment rate.
In my first 100 days, we will work with both parties to pass the biggest
investment in new, good-paying jobs since World War II. Jobs in manufacturing,
clean energy, technology and innovation, small business, and infrastructure. If we
invest in infrastructure now, well not only create jobs today, but lay the
foundation for the jobs of the future. And we will transform the way we prepare
our young people for those jobs. (Clinton)
Clinton logically explains how she is going to boost the job market in the future. She has
everything planned out and ready to go, with this she appeals to her audiences logic. If what
they hear is logical they will be drawn.
Using rhetorical devices in speeches grab the audience's attention. Ethos is the ethical
appeal, means to convince an audience of the authors credibility or character (Ethos, Pathos,
and Logos). Trump used ethos to show that he has walked in our shoes has held weeping women
in his arms, this shows his character. Clinton used ethos to sway her audience into voting for her
and not Trump. Pathos or the emotional appeal, means to persuade an audience by appealing to

Pfeiffer 7
their emotions (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos). Clinton used pathos to appeal to the family side of
the audience. She began her speech by thanking all of her family and friends. This appeals to
people's emotion by showing how much she really loves the people in her life. In Trumps
speech pathos was used patriotism as his emotional appeal. The final rhetorical device used is,
Logos or the appeal to logic, means to convince an audience by use of logic or reason (Ethos,
Pathos, and Logos) Trump used how he would fix the terrorism problem if he was in office. He
gave three logical explanations on how he would make sure America and the rest of the world
would stay safe. Clinton went with the job market development for her logos. She laid out for her
audience how she would logically increase jobs here in the Unites States of America. Each
presidential candidate used rhetorical devices to grab their audience and catch the vote. In the
end it is up to you, you are choosing based on your own beliefs and what you think is morally
acceptable.
