Barack Hussein Obama

Background
President Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
His parents met in college in Hawaii, got married and six months later Barack was born. Barack
was named after his father Barack Obama Sr. but, as a child, Obama did not have a relationship
with his father, (BIO 2016). Obama Sr. moved to Massachusetts to go to Harvard University to
earn a Ph.D. During that time Baracks parents formally separated and divorce in March 1964,
just when he was two. When Obama Sr. returned back to Hawaii he met with his son in 1971,
but sadly, he died in a car crash in 1982 in Nairobi, (BCC 2012). So, son and father didnt really
get to spend a lot of time together. About a year later in 1965, his mother Ann Dunham
remarried to Lolo Soetoro, the family then moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. Several events
happened during the time they were living in Indonesia which made Dunham worried about his

sons education and decided to send him back to Hawaii and was basically raised by his maternal
grandparents.
Barack Obama attended Harvard Law School and graduated college from Columbia
University in New York. Barack then worked for at least three years as a community organizer
in poor neighborhoods in Chicago, (BCC 2012). During his education in Punahou Academy,
Obama became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African-American, (BCC 2012). He
started noticing that he was different from everyone else. That was not the only struggle though,
he also struggled with the absence of his father. I feel amazed to learn about the background our
president has, all the things he had to go through to put him where hes at now.
Running for president
We all made this journey for a reason. It's humbling to see a crowd like this, but in my heart I
know you didn't come here just for me. No, you came here because you believe in what this
country can be. In the face of war, you believe there can be peace. In the face of despair, you
believe there can be hope. In the face of a politics that's shut you out, that's told you to settle,
that's divided us for too long, you believe that we can be one people, reaching for what's
possible, building that more perfect union, (Obama 2008). This piece was a part of President
Obama speech when he was running for election in 2008. I love how humble he was. Before be
decided he wanted to make America better, he was a community organizer making $13,000 a
year. In his speech he also mentioned that the best education he received was at the
neighborhoods of Chicago. Three years later after working for the community he became a civil
rights lawyer and soon he became as the state Senator. Later to announce his candidacy, for
President of the United States of America, (Obama 2008). He continued with his speech letting

the audience know that he hasnt spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington but those
ways needed to be changed. As election day arrived, November 4, 2008, Illinois Senator, Barack
Obama was named the 44th President of the United States, after defeating Arizonas Senator,
John McCain with 66,882,230 (53%) and McCain with 58,343,671 (46%) votes, (CNN 2008).
President Obamas First Term
During Obamas first term in the house he accomplished a lot. No matter what president takes
over a lot of issues are left behind, but what matters is that if the President that takes over knows
how to fix those problems. For example, during his first term, two wars consumed our resources,
(Friar 2012). About $1 trillion was put into the Iraq War, 4,500 troops were killed and 32,000
were wounded but he fixed the conflict. Health care was another issue for America, but in
March 2010, President Obama signed into the law of Affordable Care Act to reform the
American health care system, (Friar 2012). With this act more people were able to benefit from
health care services and it also lower the costs for people who already had some type of health
care. 9/11 will never be forgotten and on May 2, 2011 Obama took a step forward with a
mission to kill Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden and that mission was defeated as well, leaving
the Unites States with a revenge against the attackers of 9/11. America was losing over 700,000
jobs a month, banks were closing, houses were being foreclosed at unimaginable rates and the
stock market was on an unstoppable downward spiral, (Friar 2012). As we can see, our economy
wasnt at its bests. So, Obama fought for our economy problems using the Recovery Act. The
act was a success, it saved many jobs and it created many more as well. Then, President Obama
saved what economists argue as the center of the American economy, the automotive industry,
(Friar 2012). To that been said the automotive industry begin to rise and are making money and

have paid the loans back to the government. Having the first African-American as the head
leader or our country this era has been of accomplishments.
Last term
In the 2012 presidential election Obama wins re-election once again! This time defeating Mitt
Romney. Sadly, during his second term things started to get tough, for example when he tried to
pass the Gun Control Laws, several shootings began to happen such as at schools and in other
public communities. Another big conflict he tried to accomplish was an Immigration Reform.
Unfortunately, not a lot of things were successful, although the Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA) became a development. This program is expected to help up to 4.4 million
people, (NILC 2015) to be considered unlawfully present. Particular for undocumented
immigrants of 30 years older or younger and must have been 16 years old before they entered the
country, other regulations apply. One of the biggest victories he accomplished was to legalize
Gay Marriage. This ruling is a victory for America. This decision affirms what millions of
Americans already believe in their hearts: When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all
more free, (Obama 2015). This decision was one of the biggest for American citizens that
waited for decades, and when it finally became a legalization millions of Americans were happy
throughout all 50 states. It also made the LGBT community able to come out without fear.
Over-all President Barack Obama during his eight years of presidency he accomplish many
things he promised when he was running for president. Only the future will let us know what
our next President will do for our country!
