Breathless
Take time to unwind this holiday season and enjoy a flight of
sparkling wine at the Breathless Wines garden patio and tasting
lounge now open in the West Healdsburg Warehouse District.
With more than 25 best of class, gold medals and 90-point
ratings between its three wines, Breathless has been making a
mark in Sonoma County since its founding just a few years ago by
three sisters.
Breathless is about celebrating moments in lifebig or
smallthat take our breath away, says Sharon Cohn, Breathless
sister one-of-three. We are honoring our mom, Martha, who
encouraged dreaming bignever take a breath for granted, and
live life to the fullest was her mantra. Even when suffering from
Alpha-1, Martha led the charge as a teacher dedicated to helping
her community.
In that vein, Breathless donates wine and funds to Alpha-1 and
more than a dozen non-profits annually. The new tasting room
will be used by non-profit partners for educational events open to
the public.
With a vintage 1920s feel, Breathless is poised to be
Healdsburgs premier tasting room featuring Champagne method
sparkling wines, new releases of still wines, magnum bubblies and

How it Works
Dynamic Wine Tours by Beau are small group tours of the Napa
Valley no more than 10 people and cost $125 per person. They
typically run about six hours from pick-up to drop-off. These are
semi-custom tours designed with the entire group in mind. When
you book your reservation, the professionals at Beau will ask you
about your individual wine tastes and the type of wineries you would
like to visit. They will then design the tour based on the input of each
passenger in the group. Dynamic Wine Tours are always different due
to this process.
The day of your tour, you will be picked up from either a hotel in
Napa (they pick up from nearly every hotel in the Valley) or at the
Vallejo Ferry Building. Visitors from San Francisco take a ferry from
the San Francisco Ferry Building to the Vallejo ferry terminal where
they are met by a Dynamic Wine Tours guide. Once aboard the
luxurious Mercedes Sprinter you will be handed a complimentary
glass of sparkling wine, settle back in a plush seat and take the
opportunity to mingle with your tour mates for the day. You will find
28
that people visit Napa Valley from all over the world. It can be an
opportunity to make new, life-long international friendships.
The Wineries
While winding through the rolling hills of vines and terrain
unique to the Napa Valley, you will stop at four distinctive wineries
where the group is greeted by a winery escort at each destination.
These insiders will give you the scoop on their wines and process.
Many will take you on a tour of the barrel rooms, caves or vineyards,
too.
You will have ample time at each winery to savor fine wines and
make purchases to bring a taste of Napa Valley home with you. Many
of the wines you will taste are only available exclusively at the winery
or through their wine club memberships. You will taste four or five
different wines at each stop on these tours. Definitely leave room in
your suitcase for taking home a few bottles of your favorites.
Better Beckons
It a l l a wa i t s
Tasting Fees
Tasting fees are not included with the tours and range
anywhere from $15-35 per person, per winery. Some of the
wineries visited on a Dynamic Wine Tour will waive the fees
for the tour or apply the fee as credit if you purchase a couple
bottles of wine.
Tipping
Tipping your chauffer is encouraged. Tipping 15-20% per
person is the average for wine tours. Tips at tasting rooms are
not expected individual tasting fees absorb that. However,
if you feel you received terrific service, a bonus tip is always a
nice gesture.
What to Wear
Be comfortable. Wear low, appropriate walking shoes for
various terrain and dress in layers.

Tasting Notes
2012 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
The 2012 vintage was a fantastic year, marked with early bud break
and a long growing season, making it an especially great year for
Pinot Noir. This vintage Pinot Noir opens with aromas of
boysenberry, black cherry, licorice, caramel and black tea. The
balanced palate follows with solid notes of boysenberry and
blackberry, cedar spice, black tea, hints of sweet tobacco, caramel
and cocoa. While great now, this Pinot Noir will reward and age

2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
Another great year for Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Aromas
jump out of the glass with notes of fresh plum, boysenberry,
caramel, dried blackberry and hints of cola. The palate opens with
creamy notes of boysenberry syrup, plums and fresh figs with
intriguing aromatics of fall spices, accompanied by a long finish. The
2013 Pinot should age nicely over the next three to seven years, and
pairs well with steak au poivre, beef bourgogne and mushroom
risotto. Only 70 cases were produced.
2014 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
On the heels of previous years, the 2014 vintage saw high quality
fruit resulting from a long and steady growing season. Generous
aromas begin with ripe plum, raspberry, rhubarb pies and maple

Della Santinas
Located off the historic square, Della
Santinas is a family-owned .and operated
restaurant that has stood the test of time to
become a Sonoma institution. The Della Santina
family name shares a long lineage and history in
the Tuscan town of Lucca, Italy. My father
Quirico Salvatore Giovanni Della Santina
migrated from Lucca in 1960.
Residing in the North Beach area of San
Francisco, Quirico became a baker by trade.
Later, he was lured to Marin County by his uncle
Adolph to work in the family restaurant: Marin
Joes. After 25 years of successful ownership in a
thriving business, he decided to go out on his
own in beautiful Sonoma Valley. Since 1990, we
have continued to bring Tuscan country cooking
to the wine country using recipes passed down
from my grandmothers Pia Fontana Della
Santina and Clary Gambogi Barsotti.
In 2008, we opened Enoteca Della Santina, a
wine bar and retail wine shop specializing in
wines from all over the world. Enoteca,
translated literally in Italian, means wine
Della Santinas
library a place for people to enjoy a glass in an
Old World ambiance. We have created a
showcase for international as well as local, small
producers.
Our wine club has circumvented the globe
looking for value selections that expand our
members palates and knowledge. Day to day, the
bar is a gathering spot for locals and tourists
looking to experience a taste of Sonoma Wine
Country living.

Sonoma Portworks
A party in a bottle for the holidays
If the holidays are all about indulgence, then Sonoma
Portworks has the perfect offerings. The Petaluma-based
husband-and-wife team create small lot, single varietal
portsand their motto is Think Dessert!
Caryn and Bill Reading started Sonoma Portworks about
20 years ago, and they remain the only port specialists in
Sonoma County. This is a niche the Readings take very
seriously, creating most of their fine ports from a single
Clarksburg vineyard of sustainably grown Petite Sirah and
Petit Verdot grapes.
If youre looking for a creative and thoughtful gift for the
port lover on your list, Sonoma Portworks has several from
which to choose.
In addition to ARIS 2011 Petite Sirah Port, which barrel
aged for five years, and ARIS 2013 Petit Verdot Port, which
barrel aged for two years, they recently released their
MADURO Tawny Reserve Port, which aged for 11 years. For
true dessert decadence, DECO Port has an added essence of
dark chocolate.
Port isnt the only option; Sonoma Portworks also make a
sherry, an aperitif and three grappas, in addition to their own

If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on
a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it
during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the
trunk.
Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep
in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an
hour, so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production ports or
dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back
home.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like
art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no
more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus.
All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. Tell the transportation company what you
have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you
can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling
a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its
more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine
and a great time.
By Charles Neave
Do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that its simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good
answer to that query. As with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

pairing, and wine tasting experiences for both the wine novice and
expert.
The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine country
cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in American dishes, it is
influenced by French and Italian provincial cuisine. The seasonal menu
changes daily, utilizing produce from The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
visitors to experience the legacy that is Wente Vineyards.
VASCO ROAD
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine tasting
experiences, should be a top destination that people consider when
planning their next wine country getaway. As the countrys oldest,
continuously operated, family-owned winery and Californias First
Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards would be a good place to
start the journey. The winery, led by fourth and fifth generation family
members, has clearly proven their leadership both in winegrowing
and in being one of Californias premier wine country destinations.
The Winemakers Studio is an option for consumers to learn more
