Final Reflection
Dear Mrs. Allford,
As the semester is swiftly ending and the class of CRLT 101 begins to resolute to the end of the
year I would like reminisce of where I improved this semester in terms of literacy. When the
semester began, I was a little rusty because of the summer cob webs that built up because I didnt
read a book. This class helped me with a stronger understanding of grammar and a different
perspective of comprehending literary text. Analyzing text for meaning and writing were already
a skill that I had already possessed and felt like didnt need improvement except for being more
specific with my claims. Previously in high school I was already in a college level course (AP
Literature) which helped, and in this class, it helped strengthen the previous skills I was already
taught. Although in Major Assignment Three I was challenged with analyzing a text that has a
meaning thats not too elucidated. I realized that in Judith Butlers Beside Oneself: On the limits
of Sexual Autonomy I stated that in the introduction that she begins to generally speak on how our
bodies are automatically connected through societies perspective of a human and its impact on
how we view the reader view ourselves through other peoples perception. This portion of the
assignment helped me change my perspective of how I view my body compared to how society
may see my body. In paragraph three of Major Assignment Three Besides Oneself I also state As
Judith Butler begins to display specifically the perspective of the body she also begins to reminisce

on how it effects and impacts the audience as a whole. The skin and the flesh expose us to the gaze
of others but also to touch and to violence. As I was comprehending this excerpt of Judith Butlers
text I realized when I was analyzing that I catch myself make judgements of people even though I
dont see whats on the inside but mainly just by outward appearance. The touch and violence
that Butler refers to in her work is judgement because when you look at someone you make sub
conscious judgements. How they react can be interpreted as the touch and violence that they
respond to which makes every human susceptible to gaze and judgement of others because of how
their body is naturally formed. In the conclusion paragraph of Major Assignment Three Beside
Oneself I expanded upon the fact that humans everyday are in the struggle for autonomy of their
selves. I learned from reading the text that if we judge and let society set the standard for how
normal should look like we dont own ourselves anatomically because we dont accept and
perceive our current self as we are. A few of the skills I learned along the way of typing this
assignment in relation to my career path is my analytical skills because becoming a doctor requires
analyzing situations, texts, and circumstances and acting upon it. The advice I can give my future
self is to not procrastinate and specify my claims in essays more. I feel comfortable in regards to
literacy and have a more solid understanding of the previous skills I was taught.
Yours truly,
Jamel
