Job Analysis Assistant Psychology Professor

Introduction
Job Title: Assistant Professor
Educational Qualifications
At minimum, a qualified candidate must have a PhD in Psychology or some related
degree prior to his or her start date; however, those with a Psychology degree are often given
preference. The candidate must also have prior experience in teaching, preferably in a
postsecondary educational setting. Previous education must, at minimum, qualify the candidate
to teach undergraduate statistics and/or research methods, as well as courses in general
psychology. The candidate must also be experienced with conducting and publishing research
studies, preferably with use of undergraduate research assistants.
Job Alignment with Work Values and Interests
This tenure-track position generally requires the candidate to assume various roles in
order to fulfill the three missions of James Madison University: teaching, research, and service.
In consideration of this, the candidate will typically serve as professor of several classes,
advise and/or coordinate with students, and conduct research. Fulfilling responsibilities in
teaching and research allows the candidate to facilitate growth and learning in students and in the
overall body of scientific research. Additionally, to fulfill his or her service requirement, the
candidate may serve as a committee or board member, as a chair position, or in other ways that
will give back to the community. Therefore, the ideal candidate will derive great satisfaction
from personal achievements (e.g., a sense of accomplishment from attaining a personal or public
goal), as well as from providing assistance and aid to the community.
This work environment is highly interpersonal in that it requires coordination with
administration, co-workers, and students in order to accomplish goals and to allow for optimal
functioning and productivity. Thus, the ideal candidate will value forming cooperative and
involved relationships with others, including the maintenance of communication channels once
established. This environment also allows for great flexibility and self-direction in creating,
scheduling, and implementing classes; however, a myriad of responsibilities will also compel the
candidate to create his or her own agenda in order to facilitate successful job performance.
Therefore, a candidate that highly values and thrives under an autonomous, variable, and active
workplace would also be a good match for this position.
Finally, the duties associated with this position allows for fulfillment of a variety of
interests. Candidates that desire to work in a student-centered environment that involves
frequent, intimate contact with undergraduates will feel particularly serviced. Moreover, James
Madison Universitys research-focused view, as well as their innovative lab technology, allows
candidates to pursue research in their chosen area of interest. James Madison Universitys unique
emphasis on research in education and learning also means that those most interested in this

topic will be particularly fulfilled. Moreover, the academic environment allows for the distinct
opportunity for these candidates to explore these research areas with the close support and
guidance of experts in various other specializations. Additionally, the service requirement may
provide the chance for candidates to harness their research, knowledge, and/or role at the
university in order to realize any aspirations for improving the community or society as a whole.
