Bridging the gap

Eagle-eyed locals have spotted some
massive beams moving around Bacchus
Marsh as construction on a new bridge
begins.
Despite encountering a significant delay due
to heavy rains and consequent flooding of
the Werribee River, its now full steam ahead
for construction of the Halletts/OLeary
Way southern extension project - the Shires
biggest infrastructure project to date.
The extension, which involves the
construction of a new road and bridge
connection on the west side of Bacchus
Marsh, has been modelled to carry 10,000
vehicles per day and provide a direct freeway

connection.
On site, bulk earthworks have been
completed, seeing the road start to take shape
with over 40,000 cubic metres of fill being
cut since the project commenced and the
sub-base layer in progress. The stormwater
drainage network is currently being
installed, and retaining walls, including
feature sleepers, have been constructed
along Werribee Vale Road.
Bridgework is progressing and 14 pre-cast
beams (weighing 65 tonnes each) have been
constructed, and are being installed on the
bridge.
A pump station at the Maddingley Weir has
recently been completed, a significant piece

of infrastructure in itself - over 9m deep
and powered by two 100KW pumps, the
station has the capacity to pump irrigation
water to the Maddingley Basin at a rate of
approximately 40ML per day (460 litres per
second!)
The extension is anticipated to be open to
vehicle traffic during April 2017.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor David
Edwards said the bridge would provide
much-needed congestion relief for local
traffic.
Its marvellous to see the bridge well under
construction, and Im looking forward to
April when it opens; its much-needed relief
for people travelling to the schools and to
the train station in Bacchus Marsh - its the

first part of the jigsaw puzzle that we need
to complete over a number of years, Mayor
Edwards said.
At the moment, both high schools are
located at the southern end of Bacchus
Marsh, but about 50 or 60 per cent of kids
who attend them come from the north end
its a no-brainer to add an additional route
to the schools and train station to reduce the
reliance on Gisborne Road an Grant Street.
Mayor Edwards added that another
important step in the project would begin in
2017.
VicRoads is starting work on the Halletts
Way on and off ramps; this will complete the
jigsaw, which is set to start early 2017.

Ballans newest Police Sergeant has outlined his highest priorities for 2017.
Sergeant Kearnes said it

was about driving down
theft as much as possible.
Michael Kearnes said an

on family violence, responses to road trauma, volume
crime and the safety of police members.
Theft from motor vehicles

is a growing concern, especially in relation to tradesmen and their tools; but the
theft in this community is
also in relation to the commercial businesses, he said.
This year we have already
done some significant arrests
in relation to addressing the
volume of crime and some
recidivist offenders. We have
also increased our presence
on the roads in relations to
not only being seen but also
enforcing the traffic law.
Sergeant Kearnes said he
felt very welcomed by the
Ballan community and
looked forward to the year
ahead.
The new officer-in-charge

joined the force 25 years ago
and has worked in various
roles including Sergeant
at Sunshine Police Station
and Detective at Wyndham
Crime Investigation Unit.
His career has also included
time in the fraud squad; the
crime tasked operations
unit, which involves investigations of abduction,
kidnapping, extortion and
organised crime offences;
and a short service to the
homicide squad.

A new joint procurement

agreement is set to save
money and increase scheduling efficiencies for Moorabool Shire Council.
Moorabool will participate
in the aggregated procurement process for bituminous
road resealing along with
Ararat Rural City Council, Ballarat City Council,
Golden Plains, Pyrenees and
Hepburn Shire Councils,
for a minimum three-year
period, with the option to
extend two further lots of
single years.
The aim of the project is to
deliver a successful aggregated procurement process
that will provide cost savings and ongoing benefits for
all participating Councils.
A report on the matter tabled at the November 16
council meeting noted that it
is estimated the value of aggregated procurement road
sealing will be in excess of
$18 million over the initial
three year period that will
potentially see cost savings
due to the significant economies of scale.
It is envisaged that this
could result in more works
on the ground, the report
read.
The City of Ballarat will act
as lead for the procurement,
but individual Councils will
award contracts and undertake contract administration, supervision and surveillance separately.
Councillors voted to participate in the procurement
group.

Pretend professional pays hefty price

A social worker that posed
as a psychologist at a medical clinic in Bacchus Marsh
has been ordered to pay
costs of over $30,000.
Sermin Baycan, 52, appeared in the Melbourne
Magistrates Court on Monday (November 28) pleading guilty to 14 charges,
including using the title
psychologist and pretending to be a registered health
practitioner.
Baycan has never held a registration as a psychologist
despite allegedly using the
title at two medical clinics
in Victoria between May 22
and June 29 last year.
One of the two clinics included Grant Street Medical
Clinic in Bacchus Marsh.
The prosecutor acting on
behalf of the Australian
Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) told
the court the accused first
came to AHPRAs attention
following a client complaint.
It is alleged that on May 25
last year the accused took
the title of a psychologist by
signing a contract at Grant
Street Medical Clinic.
The contract referred to Ms
Baycan in brackets as a certified psychologist.
The prosecutor said in signing the contract, clients were
reasonably lead to believe
Ms Sermin Baycan was legally registered as a mental health social worker, rather than a
psychologist with her employment at the Grant St Medical clinic terminated after a series of
complaints emerged from patients. Photos Jessica Howard
that the accused had the prerequisites, qualifications, expertise and skills to supply
services as a psychologist.
Instead, she is legally registered as a mental health
social worker, rather than a
psychologist, the prosecutor said.
There are some similarities in terms of the work that
they perform but the registration and training processes are entirely different.
The court heard that some
complainants
suffered
from very significant mental health issues including
paranoid schizophrenia and
traumatised backgrounds.
A client, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed

to The Moorabool News that
24 patients were referred to
Baycan under the mental
health plan.
I had three sessions, but
they werent any good I
later rang up for my files and
the clinic said they didnt
have them as [Baycan] no
longer worked there. I rang
AHPRA to make a complaint
and I found out they were already investigating her.
Its very poor. She is hitting
people when they are most
vulnerable.
The prosecutor told the
court that the accuseds em-
ployment at the clinic was

terminated after a series of
complaints emerged from
patients in regards to Ms
Baycans conduct.
After the dust settled it
emerged that she wasnt
actually qualified as a
psychologist.
I understand from the
medical practise records that
the clinic requested copies
of her actual qualifications
during the initial interview,
however they were not
forthcoming in a timely way.
Following the series of complaints, they pressed for her
records.
In a police interview con-
ducted on June 7 this year,

Ms Baycan said there had
been an ongoing misunderstanding around mental
health plans and who is
qualified to actually undertake the work.
Despite the fact that on
many times I have tried to
educate GPs and practise
managers through my work
in the field, I have been
called ongoingly [sic] a psychologist, Ms Baycan said.
I havent tried to deceive
anybody, there is an ongoing
misunderstanding that I get
called a psychologist.
Ms Baycan also stated that
during a client session,
there was no motive to state
her qualifications, despite
four separate witness state-
ments declaring that she had

outlined her background
to include 27 years as a
psychologist.
The accuseds lawyer said
Ms Baycan was accredited
as a mental health social
worker under the Medicare
Better Access scheme, and
despite officially acting as a
psychologist, she billed the
correct benefits as a social
worker.
There were no financial
benefits to her, he said.
When she signed that contract she was working as a
social worker and the practise manager [offered her
the job]. She worked as a social worker, she hasnt gone
outside of her duties, it was
just the title itself that was
incorrect.
The accused was ordered
to pay a fine of $12,000 and
costs of $20,200 to AHPRA,
with no conviction.
The anonymous client who
used Baycans services said
they were very happy with
the result.
It was originally said that
she would be facing a $3,000
fine, so its well over what
they were expecting.
It shows that the Magistrate has taken the issue very
seriously, because youre
dealing with vulnerable
people here and at the end
of the day they were trusting
her.

With Moorabool Shires fire danger period
approaching, Detective Senior Constable
Nathan Ractliffe said there would be no
tolerance towards reckless behavior.
Fire restrictions will commence in
Moorabool at 1am on Monday December 12.
Detective Ractliffe said with the above
average rain and extensive growth, a
significant increase in fire activity was
anticipated.
Zero Tolerance means that it is illegal to
light a burn off or cause a fire to be lit without
a permit during the fire danger period, he

said.
If your actions are reckless to the presence
of a fire in the fire danger period you can
expect to be spoken to by the police.
The Zero Tolerance strategy, which was
first introduced to Moorabool during the
2005/2006 fire danger period, saw a 65 per
cent reduction in turnouts to illegal burns a figure that was welcomed by the Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan Fire Brigade Groups,
Victoria Police and Moorabool Shire.
Detective Ractliffe said before undertaking
any burn-offs, residents are to ensure they
are familiar with the rules and regulations

The intent is that if an offence is detected,
the Police will be requested by the Fire
Brigade to attend and investigate any alleged
offence.
Moorabool Shire Mayor, David Edwards
encouraged residents to visit the CFAs

information on what people can and cant do
during the declared fire season.
A written permit can be issued by a
municipal fire prevention officer or the CFA
district office and is required to burn off
grass, undergrowth, weeds or vegetation.

Lighting a fire in open air without a permit

is an offence and can bring a penalty of over
$21,000 and/or 12-months imprisonment.
I also ask that, especially given our wet
spring, landowners be considerate of their
neighbours and make sure they present fire
hazards by keeping their land clear, Mr
Edwards said.

Law Permits to burn will be issued during
this time.

One year on

The Scotsburn community
has marked the anniversary of a bushfire that tore
through the area destroying
12 houses last year, with a
celebration art exhibition.
The
Exhibition,
which
opened last Sunday to invited guests, showcases the
stories, images and impacts
of the December 2015 fire.
The exhibited works include
images of the aftermath of
the fire and recovery of the
land, charcoal and pastel
drawings, sculpture and objects resulting from the fire.

Many of the works have
been completed by residents
participating in the Art Recovery workshops held to
support the community over
the last 12-months.
Mayor David Edwards said
the Art Exhibition is the
culmination of 12-months
of recovery activities and
community strengthening
projects for the community.
The exhibition showcases
the strength and tenacity of
the community and the land

around the Scotsburn area.
Its astonishing to see how
much has changed in just
12-months, Mayor Edwards
said.
I encourage everyone to
pop in and take a look at the
Exhibition before it closes on
16 December.
The Art Exhibition will be
open to the public daily from

Arduous fire recovery reward

The fire recovery effort after
the 2015 Scotsburn bushfire
has received a state government award.
The Scotsburn Community
Recovery Committee received the award for the innovative project that helped
people or the environment
recover from the fire, at a
gala evening in Melbourne.
Following the December 19
fire last year, the State Government provided $65,000 to
assist in the social recovery
of the affected communities.
A statement released by
council said the project was
integral to building commu-
nity capacity to assist in the

long-term recovery of the
fire affected communities.
The Community Recovery Committee consists
of affected residents, hall
committee representatives,
Council staff, agency representatives, and residents
from the broader fire affected communities.
Moorabool Mayor David
Edwards said the Community Recovery Committee had worked closely in
conjunction with the Leigh
Catchment Landcare Group
who provided funding and
key linkages to professional
advice regarding environmental recovery.
The groups work closely

together to deliver monthly
bbqs and brunches, providing vital opportunities to
network with other residents and take part in environmental recovery including tree planting, waterway
management, bushfire planning workshops, gardening
workshops, agricultural advice, and future planning,
Mayor Edwards said.
Everyone has worked so
hard to help the communities of Scotsburn and surrounds, and were delighted
the committee has received
this recognition it is thoroughly deserved.

Creating art for change

Moorabools newest art gallery is shining a light on domestic violence.
The Bacchus Marsh Arts
Council has commenced the
Rise Up Project, Create Art
to Create Change, which
aims to create awareness
and raise funds for victims
of domestic violence.
BMCAI Vice President, Kylie Burton said the project
would create community,
connection and art.
Art is a powerful way
to create positive cultural
change and improve community health and wellbeing, she said.
The project, which is an initiative of Ri-Creations and
local artist Ri Van Reen, will
consist of two 90-minute
classes where participants
create two Marching Women sculptures.
Participants will keep one
of the sculptures, with the
second to be donated for sale
at the Rise Up exhibition at
the Bacchus Marsh B-MAC
Gallery on February 18 next
year.
Be a voice on
tracks and trails

Councils new delegate on the shires Walking Tracks and
Trails Committee is seeking new members for the group.
Recently elected East Ward Councillor Jarrod Bingham has

taken on committee duties, and is calling for more locals to
join up and help out.
Currently with five members, the committees Chair is set
to stand down, and Cr Bingham is hoping for at least three
more members, to field five at a meeting to be quorate.
It is an opportunity to be a voice for the community in

helping to determine priorities for Council concerning
projects to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in
the local area, Cr Bingham explained.
It is vital to understand that there is only very limited

funding available and so it should be targeted to achieve
best results. Everybody lives in different locations within
the Shire and, specifically, Bacchus Marsh and so will have
different priorities.
Ms Burton said the workshop fees had been kept low,
being $50 or $30 concession,
thanks to the generous support from the Bacchus Marsh
Community Bank Branch.
The first workshop is already underway and places
in other classes are filling
fast so those interested

should act now to participate
in this wonderful project.

GARBAGE & RECYCLING

MEETINGS
Bacchus Marsh Public Hall
Notice is given of a public meeting to be held on Thursday, 15 December 2016
commencing at 7:15pm at the Supper Room, 207 Main St Bacchus Marsh.
The purpose of the meeting is to nominate no less than three (3) or more than nine (9) adult
persons as the Committee of Management for the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall for a term
of 2 years.
The current committees term will expire on 15 December 2016. All positions will be declared

URBAN GREENWASTE SERVICE
Applications are still being taken for Councils new kerbside greenwaste collection to commence
next month - January 2017. Residents in Residential and Low Density Residential zoned areas
are eligible to receive the service. Delivery of bins/lids to those who have already applied has
started.
With approximately 15 to 20% of kerbside garbage being made up of organics, the service is part of
Moorabools strategy to reduce the amount of waste to landll. Further details about the service

No council meetings are
scheduled to be held in
Woodlands Ward next year
but local councillor Pat Toohey
is not concerned.
This year, meetings were held
in Lal Lal, Gordon, Elaine and
Blackwood and were well
attended but none will be
held in those locations next
year.
Four meetings will be held
in Ballan and Bacchus Marsh,
as well as three set to be held
at Bungareee, covering the
locations of the East, Central,
and West Ward councillors.
But a lack of infrastructure
means that meetings will not
be held in Cr Tooheys ward.
Woodlands runs from one
end of the shire to the other, so
were happy to use the facilities
that run along the edge of our
border, Cr Toohey said.

A man has been left red

pants down sending an inappropriate photo after a
drunken night out.
On July 13 this year Hayden
Mansfield was out with
work friends at the Lorne
Hotel in Lorne.
At around 10:40pm that
night Mr Mansfield picked
up an unattended phone left
at the bar and took a picture

communications costs for
the Scotsburn fire recovery
effort.
The Quarterly Financial
Report for September 2016
was officially received at the
November council meeting
but not without questions
about the $62,000 black hole.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey asked the
meeting what items on the
fire recovery claim compo-
nent of the report had been

rejected.
A council officer stated that
it was mostly communications and public relations
type costs that had not been
claimed, but that an upcoming round of grants was
hoped to cover about 60 per
cent of the amount.
This is unbudgeted; where
will those funds come from
and what will be cut? Who
will ask the government
why? Cr Toohey asked.
We anticipate we can absorb those costs, the council
officer replied.
The Moorabool News asked
council about the funding
shortfall.
Council anticipates it
will be able to claim some
of this money through the
Grants Commission process later this year and any
small balance left over can
be absorbed in our $40 million budget, read a council
statement.
Until the grants commission process is done we
wont know what the balance is.
There should be a larger police presence on the roads in general, but especially at Christmas time.

Split on meeting in January

Theres a push to have a
meeting held in January.
Usually, January is the only
month of the year during
which a council meeting
is not scheduled leaving
an eight-week gap between
the December and February
meetings.
But, Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell wants a
January meeting scheduled
and hes coming up against
opposition to the idea.
I think we need to understand that a council does
work 24/7, and losing eight
weeks over a Christmas period, it doesnt sit well with
me, Cr Tatchell said.
If we are fair dinkum about
making sure that we have
good solid economic development in the region, part
of the strategy is we cant
afford to take two months
out of planning every year.
Were there to expedite some
of these things, not slow
them down.
He said that instead of holding the meeting in the first
week of January, it could be
moved to the second week.
I dont think its to do with
councillors, I think its the
availability of council staff,
because it lands in the first
week of January it creates a
problem. But it doesnt have
to be the first week.
He said that councillors
should make the time for a
meeting.
When you put your hand
up for public service, you
have to be available 24/7.
The dates for the 2017 council meetings were confirmed
at the December council
meeting, and did not include
January.
What the other Councillors Think

Its worth considering, however I would suggest the
Meeting would be best moved to the middle of January
or later in December like the 21st because during early
January there is a skeleton crew to handle emergencies
and call outs only and they may not be available to
prepare reports. I do agree that there is a long break
but the CEO is best placed to determine the workload
and if we require additional meetings. If any item comes
up that requires immediate attention we will call a special

I would support a meeting to be held in January, to
be able to address those issues that arise over the
Christmas period, if we have that 8 week gap then we
must play catch-up in the following months, not only that
but planning applications will be unnecessarily delayed.

holiday, maybe an extended trip, especially if theyve got

The Mayor and CEO have the ability to call a special
meeting of Council if there is any urgent matter to be
decided. It is quiet over the New Year period so an
additional meeting is not usually required.

It has a lot of merit. But for some councillors who are not
self-employed, its probably their only time for a holiday,
so theyll probably be away. Nothings absolutely clear
cut, theres pros and cons to the idea - but it wouldnt

Traditionally we do not have meetings in January, I think
council does slow down a bit as people are coming off
their Christmas breaks and the like, wed probably have
less than a full complement of staff, and theres always
the opportunity to have a special meeting if theres the
need for it. Theres no point having a meeting for the sake
of having a meeting and weve had special meetings of
council from time to time in January because the need
arose, and if theres a requirement, we can do it.

Murder pain for family

It was a horrific murder that
rocked the Springbank community and now the family
of World War II veteran Ken
Handford have recalled their
pain following his death.
The Supreme Court in Ballarat heard the victim impact
statements of 20 relatives in a
plea hearing on Wednesday
December 7.
Ken Handford was found
dead on his 90th birthday on
the morning of September 15
last year.
The court heard that
40-year-old Adam Williamson and 29-year-old Jonathon Cooper broke into Mr
Handfords property and
bound his hands together
with the cord of his dressing
gown.
A sock, which was believed
to have been used as a gag,
was also found at the scene.
Mr Handford was allegedly
stabbed by Cooper 13 times
before being left to suffer for
nearly five hours before his
death.
The two accused fled the
property with a collection
of WW II medals, $3900 cash
and a gold chain.
The victims eldest brother
and only remaining sib-
ling,
Ronald
Handford
told the court that he was
devastated.
Nothing can take my mind
off how he was murdered. It
makes me scared, he said.
Sometimes I wish it was
me and not my brother Kenny. I should have been there
to help but I couldnt.
Prosecutor Justin Lewis
told the court that Williamson had previously worked
with Mr Handford in 2014
at the Maher potato farm in
Springbank.
However, Williamson allegedly left the job after being
accused of stealing money.
The court heard that Mr
Handford had recognised
Williamson during the
botched robbery after Cooper confessed to a friend,
stating that Mr Handford
had said, Youre killing me
Adam.
Mr Handfords grandson,
Jarrod, said he had known
Williamson for more than a
decade and had played sport
and gone camping with him.
The fact that he knew [Ken]
was my grandfather fills me
with rage and just shows
how corrupted he is.
Mr Handfords daughter,
Margaret said she felt a
deep internal pain when
Jonathon Cooper in court earlier this year.

she remembered that her

dad was no longer there.
He would give you the
last dollar in his pocket if
you needed it. I dont understand how my dad, who
had so many friends and no
enemies, was put through all
of this, she said.
I didnt lose my dad, he

was violently taken from me
and my family.
Coopers lawyer, Jason Gullaci, said his client had been
under the influence of ice
and had not slept for close to
three days.
He said Cooper had no intention of killing Mr Handford, but was interested in

the $20,000 believed to be
kept on the property.
The court heard Cooper had
held a double-edged knife
towards Mr Handfords back
before Williamson nodded
his head.
On Thursday (December 8),
Williamsons lawyer, Rich-
ard Edney, said his client

was not in the room at the
time of the stabbing.
However, Justice Jane Dixon
said if Williamson was not
in the room at the time, the
charge (unintentional killing
in the course or furtherance
of a crime of violence) would
have to be questioned.
The case was adjourned to a
contested plea on December
16.

Charlie Grants rink got off to a slow start, trailing 4-10 after
9 ends, however they recovered after the tea break to win 9 of
the last 13 ends to run out 7 shot winners. Bill Hawkens rink
maintained their winning streak also with a 7-shot win but
newly crowned Club Singles champion Steve Sullivans rink
took the honours of the day with an 11-shot win.
Alan Thistlethwaites rink had a day to forget losing by 28
shots, meaning Avenue lost overall by 3 shots.

Peter Glass rink won by 8 shots, despite dropping 4 shots
on the penultimate end and Bob Delaneys rink and Glenys

For Avenue Dave McKendricks rink bolted out of the blocks
to set up a 13-shot lead at the tea break, which they managed to stretch out to 20 shots by end 25. Di Hardiments rink

by 3 shots. Mike Robertss rink had only their second loss for
the season, going down by 10 shots, whilst Ray Humphreys
rink went down by 4 shots after conceding the last 4 ends.

Returning skips Oscar Muaff and Peter Kay and their respective rinks led the charge recording a 24-shot win and 12shot wins respectively, whilst new skip Malcolm Smiths rink
recorded its first win for the season getting up by 5 shots.
Unfortunately, Ron Millingtons rink lost the last 5 ends after
being level on end 20 to go down by 11 shots.
The win consolidates the side in the top four however they
face a danger game against Smeaton (away) in next weeks
game before the Christmas break.

Ballan took to the field this week, with great bowling by all bowlers
led by Ryan Aquilinas 4/53 that kept wickets falling regularly
throughout the afternoon, to have Mt Clear 1st Innings all out for
154. Ballan put Mt Clear back into bat hoping to bowl them out in
37 overs. Despite a great performance by Hayden Micallef with
the ball of 5/20 Ballan fell just short of obtaining an outright win.

Results Round 9
A poor finish to the year continued for Division 1 with three
late exclusions lost during the week compounding the run
of less than desirable form, and culminating in a loss to a
Romsey side now looking optimistically towards finals
rather than relegation.
Romsey jumped the more favoured Marsh Bulls from the
outset and never looked back, keeping them at arms length
for the entire match.
The only shining light for the visitors was Craig Norris
rink, leading by up to 20 at one point before finishing 12 shot
victors.
L Keane lost 21-28, A Dodd 15-30 and J Webster 18-31 in the
84-107, 2-16 defeat.
Bacchus Marsh must regroup after the Christmas break if
they are any chance of snatching a finals spot.
Division 2 went down to Diggers Rest at home 84-88, 4-14
and have slipped to third on the ladder, 17 points clear of
Macedon in fifth.
Division 3 remain on the bottom of the ladder after travelling
to Kyneton and 48-74, 2-14.

Nelson Banigo (Eagles) made it a clean sweep on the track

for this season, breaking the Under 8 300 metres in a new
record time of 55.84 secs. Nelson now holds all Boys Under
8 track records. Emma Stewart (Blues) & Zali Lorenc Young
(Dolphins) both recorded 5 PBs.
This Friday evening the Centre will be conducting a twilight
meet commencing at 5pm. A BBQ will be held and a special
visit from Santa. The Christmas Raffle will also be drawn
during the evening. This will be the final Centre meet for
2016.

The Darley Lions First XI
have ended the 2016 season
on a positive note, defeating
Brown Hill by 125 runs in
their two-day fixture completed last weekend.
After opening batsman Lachie Herring set up the game
for the Lions with his unbeaten 134 in the first week
of the game, Sri Lankan
spinner Hasitha Wickramasinghe mesmerised the
Brown Hill batsmen, recording his first five-wicket haul
of the season to lead the Lions to victory.
Wickramasinge (6/43 off 13
overs) took key wickets at
regular intervals, aided by
some tight bowling at the
opposite end allowing the
crafty spinner to attack the
batsmen and install the Lions at the top of the ladder.
Darleys Second XI were always going to have the job in
front of them trying to chase
down Buninyongs score of
345 that they compiled in
the first week, with the Lions
bowled out for 170.
A 43 run partnership for the
third wicket between opener
Hamish Wheeler (36) and
young gun Mitch Ward (16)
and a similarly impressive
49 run ninth-wicket partnership between top scorer
Brendan Densley (59) and
Josh Calvitto (20) were the
highlights.
The Lions Third XI had a
day to forget, losing outright
to Brown Hill in their biggest
loss of the season to date.
After dismissing Darley for
125 last week and starting
the day at 3/115, Brown Hill

put on a quick-fire 142 runs
without losing a wicket,
before declaring at 3/257 to
give Darley a target of 132
to make to avoid an outright
loss.
After losing early wickets,
skipper Liam Jordan (36) and
Clint Salisbury (25) steadied
the ship, but when Salisbury was dismissed with
the score on 56, it triggered
a Lions batting collapse as
they were soon all out for
88, giving Brown Hill the
maximum ten points from
the game.
After a bye last weekend,
the Lions Fourth XI were
back in action in a one-day
fixture against Ballan, and
would have fancied their
chances after winning the
toss and sending Ballan into
bat, then dismissing them
for 111 and only allowing
three batsmen into double
figures. Andrew Bird was
the best of the Darley bowlers, returning figures of 3/11
from his eight overs, whilst
Brandon Hughes, Tim Gallagher and Lane Havelberg all
claimed two wickets each.
The Lions were looking
strong at 2/53 with the inform Darren Hynes and
Greg Simmons at the crease,
but when Hynes was dismissed for 27 with the team
score on 53, Ballan claimed
wickets in quick succession to bundle the Lions out
for 90, with only Simmons
(20) and captain Jim Shea
(12 not out) providing any
resistance.

When Galea was dismissed
for a well-made 73 with the
score on 137, having seen
Ward depart for 30 not long
before, the Lions middle order stood up with important
contributions from Regan
King (15), wicketkeeper
Jordan Monaghan (15) and
Rockey Hoey dismissed for
20.

The Lions 14 & Under First
XI had victory in their sights
after entering the second
day of their match against
Wendouree White. They
soon dismissed Wendouree,
who were 7/94 after the first
half of their innings, for 127
after just six overs of play.
Austin Macbeth took two of
the remaining three wickets to return figures of 3/29,
with Ben Taylor taking the
other second-day wicket to
give him two for the game.
With the game already in
their keeping, the Lions recommenced their innings
on 3/148 and moved to 7/261
by the end of play, with
Will Johnson the dominant
second-day batsmen with an
impressive 42 not out to go
with Jaylen Altays first-day
half century.
After entering the second
week of their match against
Mount Clear with the game
well and truly in the balance,

Darleys 14 & Under Second
XI side were unsuccessful in
their quest for victory, with
the Mounties coming out on
top.
Mount Clear recommenced
their innings at 4/107, and
was dismissed three overs
short of their allotment for
211.
Tyler OHehir was the pick
of the Darley bowlers with
3/29, whilst skipper Luke
Haywards took two firstweek wickets and Logan
Moffat also chipped in with
a pair of wickets.
Recommencing their innings on 3/114, Moffat was
dismissed early and the Darley wickets fell at an alarming rate to be all out for 136.
Best with the bat were Aaron
Cadman (52 retired) and
Luke Hayward (18).
The Under 12 sides had
mixed results with the Darley Pride victorious over
Melton Centrals Red, but the
Darley Cubs going down to
Eynesbury Eagles Green.
The Pride made 7/176 in
the first week of their game,
holding Melton Centrals Red
to 9/133 in the second week
to record an impressive win.
The Cubs werent as successful this game, with the
Eagles making 4/165 off
their 20 overs. Mitchell Wells
returned the impressive figures of 2/5 off his four overs,
including a double-wicket
maiden. The Cubs could
only manage 5/110, with
Lachie Nash 12 not out, Patrick Jarvinen also on 12 and
Malakie McLoughlin topscored with 17.
