Classroom Learning Profile based on observations and data

Use readings and EDUC 202 self-reflection assignments from the past to describe your placement class:

Culture

All students are Americans so they are used to American culture.

Race & Ethnicity

Out of 21 students, 20 are white Americans and one is Chinese-American who had been adopted into
American family.

Social SystemsPeers & Family

Most students at Sunnyside Christian School come from wealthy families. Even in my classroom
majority are from well-off families, but there are one or two families that come from lower income
class and need financial support from school. From what I have seen so far, students get along well
with each other which made me think that they are also doing well at home.

Moral, Spiritual, and

Faith Development

According to Mrs. Thompson every student comes from Christian families. They seem to be
comfortable with having devotions every morning and praying for each other. They are good at
memorizing Bible verses and most of them knew the Lords Prayer by heart.

Attention & Memory

It seems like most of the students have short attention span, which is common for students that age (2 nd
grade). To prevent them from drifting off or being bored, Mrs. Thompson changes the subject every
20-30 minutes; for one minute students are reading books by themselves and the next minute they are
doing spelling test. Mrs. Thompson does this so swiftly and kids seemed to be used to such routines.
From what I have observed, they also seemed to be doing well with memories. When they were
reading books I went around with question sheets and asked about the book and they were able to tell
me the storyline without looking back at the book.

Language

Nearly all students seem to be good at receptive and expressive language; whenever Mrs. Thompson
gave oral instructions I have not yet heard students going, Huh? or What did she say? which
suggest that they understand oral instructions very well. I have not had difficulty in communicating
with students verbally and I had an impression that they are good at expressing their feelings too.

Motor &
Spatial/Sequential
Ordering

There is always much movement in the classroom. Class would start by kids writing their morning
message and after that they all move to the back of the classroom, sit on a rug and do devotions. I have
had a chance to grade their notebooks and look at their diagrams; though messy, most of their
handwritings were legible and diagrams were not bad for that age.

Higher Order Thinking

Since our class schedule is focused on literacy during morning time, I have not been able to observe
how students do in math or science so I cannot say much about this. However when I read their
storybook they had pretty good imaginative and creative stories which is a good sign for higher-order
thinking.

Ability & Disability

One boy has three fingers on his right hand and four fingers on his left hand; however this does not
stop him from doing anything that everyone else in the class is capable of. One girl has hearing
problems and cannot hear very well so Mrs. Thompson has to wear the microphone all the time and
pass it on to a different teacher when kids go for Spanish, music or PE classes. Still, she is as bright as
the other kids in the class.
