WATER AND ICE

WATER:
Water is a polar molecule. It is formed when two hydrogen atoms combine with one oxygen
atom. It is covalently bonded. In covalent bonding the hydrogen atoms share their electrons with
the oxygen atom. The sharing is not equal. The oxygen atom attracts the shared paired more
strongly which gives water an asymmetrical distribution of charge. It contains poles at each
ends which make them a polar molecule.

The positive region will attract the negative region and by this a hydrogen bond will be formed.
The hydrogen atom is the donor which gives and electron and oxygen atom is the acceptor
which accepts the electron from the hydrogen atom. Hydrogen atom is very weak compared to
covalent bond.

Properties of water:
1. Water is a liquid at standard temperature and pressure (25 degrees Celsius and 1 atm, for
liquids).
2. Water is tasteless and odorless.
3. It is transparent.
4. It is a universal solvent, dissolving many substances.

ICE
Ice has a rigid structure compared to water. It is formed by decreasing temperature to zero
degree. It is waters solid form which is less dense. It forms a hexagonal structure. It contains
more spaces than the water which makes them less dense and allow them to float on water.
