Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria normally live in the intestines of people and animals. Most E.

coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract. However,
some E. coli are pathogenic, meaning they can cause illness, either diarrhea or illness outside of the
intestinal tract. The types of E. coli that can cause diarrhea can be transmitted through contaminated
water or food, or through contact with animals or persons.

E. coli is short for Escherichia coli -- bacteria (germs) that cause severe cramps and
diarrhea. E. coli is a leading cause of bloody diarrhea. The symptoms are worse in children
and older people, and especially in people who have another illness. E. coli infection is
more common during the summer months and in northern states.

E. coli is the name of a type of bacteria that lives in your intestines. Most types of E. coli
are harmless. However, some types can make you sick and cause diarrhea. One type
causes travelers' diarrhea. The worst type of E. coli causes bloody diarrhea, and can
sometimes cause kidney failure and even death. These problems are most likely to
occur in children and in adults with weak immune systems.

Escherichia coli, a facultatively anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, is a major component of the normal intestinal
flora and is ubiquitous in the human environment. First described in 1885, E coli has become recognized as
both a harmless commensal and a versatile pathogen.

The genus Escherichia is named after Theodor Escherich who isolated the type species of the genus in
1885. Escherichia coli is a gram-negative rod that is found as a normal commensal in the GI tract, which can
produce ocular infection including corneal ulcer and endophthalmitis, which can result in a devastating
outcome. Early recognition and appropriate treatment is crucial. These infections most commonly occur in
patients who are debilitated, immunocompromised, or diabetic or in corneas with an underlying pathologic
condition.

Escherichia coli, a facultatively anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, is a

noteworthy part of the typical intestinal vegetation and is pervasive in the
human environment. Initially portrayed in 1885, E coli has ended up perceived
as both an innocuous commensal and a flexible pathogen
