Industrial
Coatings Market

he industrial coatings market is quite diverse owing to its varied applications. It encompasses protective coatings for architectural steel, transportation and oil and offshore structures, just to name a few segments.
Industrial coatings must protect substrates in some of the harshest conditions. Environmental legislation has added to the challenge, by forcing
coatings manufacturers to develop durable coatings that both meet environmental regulations and deliver outstanding performance.
We interviewed leaders in the industrial coatings market including Axalta,
Hempel, Sherwin-Williams, AkzoNobel and Hempel to see how they remain
competitive in such a challenging market. Across the board these market
leaders stressed the importance of understanding customers goals and letting that be the guide to new innovation, products and services.
According to market research firm IRL, general industrial coatings is estimated to have reached almost 7.6 million metric tons in 2015, with sales expected to reach more
than 8.9 million metric
tons by 2020. In terms
of value, global sales of
general industrial coatings reached $23 billion
in 2015. Asia accounted for the largest share
of the market despite
having a substantially
lower average price
compared to Western economies. Europe followed Asia closely in terms of the
revenue generated, although with a substantially lower volume sold.

and Valspar Receive Second Request
From FTC Under HSR Act

he Sherwin-Williams Company
and The Valspar Corporation
announced that, as expected,
the companies have each received a request for additional information and
documentary materia from the United
States Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
in connection with Sherwin-Williams
pending acquisition of Valspar. The
Second Request was issued under notification requirements of the Hart-ScottRodino Antitrust Improvements Act of
1976, as amended (the HSR Act). This
Second Request is a common part of the
regulatory process in connection with
the FTCs review.
The transaction, which was announced
on March 20, 2016, is subject to approval
of Valspars shareholders and satisfaction
of other customary closing conditions, including expiration or termination of the
waiting period under the HSR Act. The
effect of the Second Request is to extend
the waiting period imposed by the HSR
Act until 30 days after Sherwin-Williams
and Valspar have substantially complied
with the request, unless that period is extended voluntarily by the parties or terminated sooner by the FTC.
Sherwin-Williams and Valspar are
cooperating fully with the FTC staff
and continue to expect the transaction
will close by the end of Q1 calendar
year 2017. Given the complementary
nature of the businesses and the benefits
this transaction will provide to customers, Sherwin-Williams and Valspar
continue to believe that no or minimal
divestitures should be required to complete the transaction.

RPM Acquires Full Interest in


Chinese Joint Venture
RPM International Inc. has announced
that its Carboline Company subsidiary

acquired the remaining 51 percent interest in its Chinese joint venture, Carboline
Dalian Paint Production Co., Ltd.
(Carboline Dalian), bringing its total
ownership to 100 percent.
Terms of the transaction, which is expected to be accretive to earnings within
one year, were not disclosed. Carboline
acquired its initial 49 percent interest
in the company in 2009. UniChemical
Company, originally a Carboline licensee,
has been Carbolines long-standing partner in the joint venture. Carboline Dalian,
with sales of approximately $11 million,
manufactures corrosion control coatings
and linings for oil and gas, power and
petrochemical related projects.
Headquartered in Dalian, China, the
company also has operations in Shanghai,
Tianjin, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

China presents vast growth opportunities, but is also a very dynamic


market. Because of these conditions, we
chose to enter China in 2009 with a local joint venture partner, stated Frank
C. Sullivan, RPM chairman and chief
executive officer. Now, with full ownership of the business, we can accelerate the
growth of Carboline in the region and enable it to serve as a platform for our other
subsidiaries to increase their penetration
throughout the Chinese marketplace.

AkzoNobel To Acquire BASFs Industrial


Coatings Business For 475 Million

kzoNobel has made an agreed offer to acquire BASFs Industrial


Coatings business for 475 million.
The transaction would include technologies, patents and trademarks, as well
as securing supply to customers worldwide. Two manufacturing plants one in
the UK and one in South Africa would
also be transferred to AkzoNobel. The
business generated revenue of approximately 300 million in 2015 and supplies
products for a number of end uses, including coil, furniture foil and panel coatings, wind energy and general industry,
and commercial transport.
This proposed acquisition will
strengthen our position in the important
coil coatings market and fits well with
our existing business, allowing us to offer
essential solutions to our customers, said
AkzoNobel CEO Ton Bchner. We are
continuing to deliver on our strategy to
achieve our vision of leading market positions delivering leading performance.
The planned transaction is expected to
be completed in the second half of 2016,
subject to regular consultation with employee representatives and satisfaction
of certain closing conditions, including
receipt of required regulatory approval.

Center in Houston
BASF recently opened a new Refinish
Competence Center in Houston, Texas.
The center includes the latest in virtual
and in-person training facilities, state-ofthe-art spray booths and market-leading
application equipment to enable next
generation training for all job functions
in the collision repair industry.

painting techniques here in Houston, said

PPG Foundation Donates


$10,000 to Allegheny
College for Educational
Program
The PPG Foundation recently provided
a $10,000 grant to Allegheny College in
support of the Creek Connections program, an educational collaboration between Allegheny College and middle and
high schools in Western Pennsylvania.
The Creek Connections program fosters students curiosity in science-related
fields by turning local watersheds into
outdoor laboratories through hands-on
biological investigations, said Ron Cole,
provost and dean of Allegheny College.
Were thankful for PPGs support,
which assists in providing an environment where students interact with science
in real-life environments and apply scientific techniques outside of the classroom.
More than 50 teachers and 40 secondary schools participate in the Creek
Connections program each year, offering
students hands-on research opportunities
as well as experience with field-testing
techniques, water quality monitoring, the
scientific process, data analysis and independent research procedures. The PPG

Foundation grant will support chemical refills for teachers test kits, travel to
schools and stream sites, and a student
research symposium.

the Creek Connections programs unique
approach to science education, PPG aims

Hempels Dynamic Delivers


Fuel Savings for Lemissoler
Global

Lemissoler Navigation, via its affiliated
and managed company Frontmarine Co.
Ltd, has achieved significant fuel savings
from coating its newbuild 58,500dwt
supramax bulk carriers with Hempels
Dynamic antifouling product.
As part of an environmental efficiency drive, Lemissoler has adopted a
unique hull design for the new vessels,
fitted them with fuel-efficient propellers
and coated the undersides with Hempels
Dynamic antifouling. According to the
design specification, fuel consumption
was calculated at 24.7 tons per day at
14.2 knots in ballast condition. Thanks to
the eco-innovations, these vessels in sea
trials are achieving a fuel consumption of
just 23 tons.
Lemissoler Navigation has coated
four of the eight newbuilds with Dynamic
and, based on its successful performance,
is planning to coat the remaining four
vessels with the same product.

Americas, Inc. This project focuses on improving the fuel efficiency of truck and bus radial
tires using PPGs AGILON performance silica platform. The goal of the
project is to deliver prototype tires to
DOE that help trucks and buses achieve
fuel-efficiency improvements of 4 to 6
percent while maintaining or improving
tear strength and tread wear. Research
and development work for the project
will be completed at PPGs Monroeville,
Pennsylvania, facility.
Anup Jain, PPG vice president, specialty coatings and materials, said PPGs
collaboration with Bridgestone has the
potential to significantly change the truck
tire industry. We are excited to partner
with Bridgestone on this important project, he said. The DOE funding validates
what our preliminary research already
has shown that Agilon performance
silica has significant potential as a nextgeneration filler to help increase truck tire
fuel efficiency.
Improving the fuel efficiency of trucks
and buses would provide significant
economic and environmental benefits.
According to DOE reports, heavy-duty
vehicles comprise only 4 percent of all
vehicles on U.S. roads but consume approximately 20 percent of all fuel. PPG
estimates that if even 25 percent of all
tractor-trailers on the road improved fuel

efficiency by 4 percent, they would consume 750 million fewer gallons of diesel
fuel annually, saving nearly $2 billion and
reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by
nearly 8 million metric tons.
According to Kurt Danielson, president, Bridgestone Commercial Group,
Bridgestone has a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. The
companys environmental mission is to
help ensure a healthy environment for
current and future generations, and as
the worlds largest tire and rubber company, Danielson said Bridgestone believes
it has a corporate responsibility to produce sustainable products in the most
sustainable way. Using 2005 data as a
baseline, the companys midterm target is
to achieve a 35 percent reduction in CO2
emissions by 2020.

Flying Scotsman Returns Painted in Iconic Livery


The worlds most famous locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, is
back on track in its iconic British Rail green livery thanks to the
products and color library of authentic historic shades of Craftmaster Paints of Cambridge.
The final phase of the 4.2 million project was completed in
February by Heritage Painting, using Craftmaster Coach Enamel, a premier high pigment paint, in the iconic British Rail green.
The product is manufactured by HMG Paints, the UKs largest
independent paint manufacturer, whose experienced color
matchers recreated the iconic color.
Thousands of train enthusiasts lined tracks and bridges
across the country to catch a glimpse of the Flying Scotsman
in its restored iconic livery, as the legend made its inaugural run
from London to York, where the next chapter in the Flying Scotsman story will see it become a working museum exhibit.
The locomotives paint system, from primer and high build

undercoat to classic coach enamel, results from a highly developed and close technical partnership between Craftmaster and

Based on the average 10 percent

That figure represents around 1.5 percent
of the global emissions from shipping, as
estimated by the 3rd IMO Greenhouse
Gas Study.

Electrocoating is a coating process that
deposits organic coating materials onto a
substrate using an electrical charge, while
submerged in a tank. Electrocoating is
used in a variety of industries due to its

shapes including automobile vehicle bodies, parts and assembled components and
those used in many industrial applications
as well. Electrocoat is designed to provide
lasting protection against corrosion.
Subda also presented a paper on the
submersible data acquisition unit (sub).
The sub is a device that measures and records alternating current (AC) and direct
current (DC) voltage at various locations
on parts traveling through an electrocoat
tank. Data from the sub can be used to
determine system conditions, optimize
quality and reduce production costs.
Traditionally, E-coat tank monitoring devices only measure total output of
voltage and current at the rectifier/anode
and the average temperature of the E-coat

Chinas global dominance in several

expanding use of adhesives and sealants
in manufacturing and assembly markets,
will underpin demand gains. Adhesive
bonding technologies are expected to
make further inroads in applications historically dominated by mechanical fasteners and other alternative joining systems,
especially as manufacturers continue to
reduce the weight of products such as
motor vehicles, aircraft and electronics.
However, advances will be limited by
trends toward high solids formulations
and lower application weights, which will
reduce the volume of adhesives and sealants consumed.

America and Asia Pacific. Despite the existence of the European Unions single market,
Europe remains a relatively fragmented market.

Despite the existence of the European


Unions single market, Europe remains a
relatively fragmented market. Variations of
local market conditions have to be taken
into account when commercializing new
products and technologies.
Weve inherited a lot of brands
and we aim to keep them all alive and
well, Jean-Marie Greindl, president
PPG Europe, Middle East and Africa
(EMEA) and senior vice president,
PPG Architectural Coatings, told
European journalists at a briefing in
Amsterdam, mostly devoted to R&D
and new products.
Over the last 10 years the Pittsburghbased company has moved out of glass
and chemicals to concentrate on building up its core coatings operation into a
business with annual sales of $14 billion.
Around 45 percent s of these came from
the construction sector, with OEM and
the car aftermarket accounting for 33
percent, aerospace and marine 8 percent
and general industrial 14 percent.
The U.S. and Canada made up 46
percent of sales in 2015, with EMEA
accounting for 28 percent, Asia Pacific
16 percent and Latin America.10 percent. In all of its major global segments, the company has a No. 1 or 2
position, with the exception of protective and marine coatings.
Our leadership positions can be
linked to operational excellence and research innovation, said Greindl.
In Europe the company has nine laboratories for architectural coatings, while
protective and marine coatings with its
need for more customization has 40 in
the whole EMEA area. R&D activities in
Europe are supported by central laboratories in Allison Park and East Point in
the U.S. and a third in Mexico City.
PPG has gradually built up a system

which ensures close co-ordination of the


activities of its R&D and technical staff
across the world, particularly on both
sides of the Atlantic.
The importance of this wide network
becomes evident when ideas for potential
innovations are sifted and priorities set
for which ones will be researched and developed for eventual commercialisation.
In architectural coatings a total of approximately 150 new product ideas is
generated each year. These come from a
variety of sources such as marketing
surveys, direct suggestions from customers and the need to respond to new regulations and standards. Another fount of
ideas is PPGs own road mapping and
benchmarking of technologies and collaborative programmes with universities
and raw material suppliers.
Ideas for further research are selected centrally but only after input
from local staff, said Philippe Hosotte,
global technical director for architectural coatings, in an interview separate
from the briefing.
We have strongly embedded technical groups locally who keep themselves
up to date with what are the factors
driving the local market, he explained.
There is a regular interaction between
the center and local R&D and technical
people. Weve a good global communications system so no one is isolated and we
can response quickly to market opportunities, if necessary.
However, the need to take into account
local conditions can result in roll-outs
of new products being a relatively slow

kitchen coatings called Sigma LTA for lipophobic technology for acrylics was, for
example, launched in the Netherlands in
late 2014 and then neighboring Belgium
and Germany last year while its introduction in France is planned for the end
of this year.
A one-and- half-year roll-out in
Europe is fairly typical, said Hosotte.
For more specialist products it would
be longer.
A heat-resistant external coating
called Sigma Ultra Cool with a high
level of total solar reflectance (TSR) has
taken time to be fully commercialised in
Europe. It was originally introduced in
France in 2011 to help builders and architects use dark external colors to comply with new French building regulations
banning coatings with low TSR levels. Its
launch in other countries has depended
on the availability of the right tinting systems and the degree of need for regulatory compliance.
When an idea for new products is
strongly backed by an PPG operation
in one European country it will attract support in others in the region.
Innovations which are in line with
mega trends such as those which promote ease of use, application productivity and energy savings will be endorsed
across the Atlantic as well.
Any differences in approach to innovations between European countries
tends to depend on the strength and position of brands. Formulations may have
to be adjusted to make new products
consistent with the characteristics of local brands.
We have to be careful in everything
we do with the positions of our brands in
Europe, said Hosotte. Often they have
been acquired at a high price so that their
value needs to be protected.
The need to focus on the strength
of local brands is much greater in
Europe than elsewhere. In regions like
North America and Asia Pacific there
are fewer of them. For PPG in Europe
the task of keeping a balance between
the global and local, at least in the architectural coatings sector, is far more

and Tape Industry Association, the adhesives production in China in 2014 was
6.59. million tons and total sales of adhesives
was 82.3 billion RMB, increased respectively
by 7.8 percent and 6.1 percent over 2013. And
it is estimated that Chinas adhesive market will
be more than 100 billion RMB for the first time
in history in 2015.
The growth of new markets, including
high speed train, passenger car, consumer electronics, clean energy, aircrafts and packaging, provides growth potentials for adhesives.
Furthermore, the Chinese government lists adhesive as an industry into which foreign companies are still encouraged to invest. However,
like the coatings market, the adhesives market

is experiencing structure adjustment. High performance, environmentally friendly adhesives


are on the path to becoming mainstream products in the Chinese market. The development
of EVA hot melt adhesives and non-solvent
polyurethane and silicon adhesives is outpacing
the development of traditional varieties such as
solvent-based adhesives.
However, the market demand for highend adhesive varieties is still satisfied by the
products of foreign companies such as Henkel,
Dow Chemical, Ashland and H.B. Fuller. But
the adhesives technologies of major domestic
adhesive companies are catching up rapidly,
reflected by the growth of adhesive trade volume. In 2014 China imported a total of 259.8
thousand tons of adhesives, comparing with
187.3 thousand tons in 2013. On the contrary,
China exported 576.2 thousand tons of adhesives in 2014, comparing with 395.9 thousand
tons in 2013.

Market demand for high-end adhesive


varieties is still satisfied by the products
of foreign companies like Henkel, Dow
Chemical, Ashland and H.B. Fuller.
With the continuous improvement of
the Chinese economy and rapid increase
of disposable income of Chinese consumers, Chinas food industry is growing at
a fast speed. In 2015 the total revenue
of Chinas food industry was increased
by 4.6 percent, and total profit increased
by 5.9 percent over 2014. And the medicine industry has become one of the fastest growing industries in Chinas whole
economy, although their annual growth
was actually slowing down in 2015. In
the first half of 2015, the total revenue of
Chinas medicine industry was increased
by 8.9 percent and total profit increased
by 12.9 percent comparedwith the same
period of 2014. With the pace of living
and work becoming faster and faster, the
white collar workers and the millennium
generation are more and more inclined
to purchase and consume convenient
and small packaged food products, a
trend offering a good opportunity for the
packaging adhesive market to grow. In
responding to the new trend, major adhesive producers either expand their production in China or increase production
lines to introduce new flexible packaging
adhesives products into the market.
Beijing Comens New Material Co.,
Ltd is the largest polyurethane lamination adhesives producer in China. The
company put their new 22 thousand tons
per year plant into production in 2015 in
Nantong, Jiangsu province, totaling the
companys adhesives capacity to 36 thousand tons per year. With the release of the
new production capacity, Comens revenue was increased by around 4 percent
and its profit increased by an amazing 49
percent in the first quarter of 2016.
Besides adding new capacity, Comens
has invested to renovate their production
lines in their Beijing plant and developed

a series of non-solvent adhesives, spanning from regular to cooking varieties.


The company stated that the demand for
VOC free flexible packaging adhesives
has encouraged the development of nonsolvent polyurethane adhesives in China.
And the market share of non-solvent adhesives in the whole lamination adhesives
market has been increasing rapidly in recent two years. In addition, Comens introduced new non-solvent polyurethane
adhesives into the cigarette sector, and the
company is also developing a new market: artificial turf.
As another major domestic adhesive
company, Hubei Huitian put their 10
thousand tons per year polyurethane production line into operation in 2015 to
satisfy the demand increase in the local
market. As a result of this, Huitians sales
from their flexible packaging adhesives
was increased by 307.31 percent.
The central government has been encouraging the development of clean energy in China, resulting into China being
number one in several clean energy sectors. For example, China has the largest
photovoltaic(PV) power capacity in the
world, with a total volume of 43.2 million kilowatts at the end of 2015. And it
is estimated that this number will reach
100 million kilowatts in 2020. In addition, wind energy sector experienced a
big leap last year, adding 30 million kilowatts of new capacity. China was ranked
No.1 for winder power increase in the
world, followed by America with 8.6
million kilowatts. The increase of clean
energy capacity in China enabled several
adhesives companies to reap considerable
profits in 2015.
Hubei Huitians total revenue from
their renewable energy business was increased by 37.64 percent and almost

doubled total sales from their solar cell


back sheets in 2015. Hutians products
for renewable energy market include PV
adhesives and solar cell back sheet, etc.
Currently the company is also working
hard to introduce their adhesives into
wind power sector.
Shanghai Kangda is without doubt
the leader for wind power structural adhesives, with a market share of around
70 percent. In 2015, the companys sales
in solar and wind power sectors was increased by 44 percent, and adhesives sold
to clean energy sectors was 73.78 percent of Kangdas total revenue. Besides,
Kangda is adding new production capacities for epoxy adhesives and epoxy resins,
which, when completed, could have a visible impact to the companys bottom line.
However, Kangdas businesses depends
highly on government support to the development of wind and solar energy sectors, meaning their revenue could have
drastic fluctuation if government policy
changes direction.
By the end of 2015, the total length
of high speed railway lines reached 19
thousand kilograms. In 2016 alone, the
government will invest over 800 billion
RMB into new railway projects. Unlike
the railway sector, whose growth is supported by the government, the automobile industry is driven by the demand of
Chinese consumers. In the first quarter
of 2016, the total output of Chinas
automobile industry was 6.59 million, increased by 6.2 percent over the
same period of 2015. Meanwhile, the
output of new energy automobiles was
increased by 110 percent. The positive
market trend transforms new investments in many downstream markets, including adhesives and sealants.
Henkel is in preparation of expanding their adhesive production capacities.
The whole project, with a total investment of 50 million RMB, is estimated to
be completed in the second half of 2017
in Henkels current production base in
Shanghai, and add a new capacity of 20
thousand tons per year.
Besides Henkel, many other foreign
and domestic companies are developing
new technologies or introducing new adhesives into the market. CW

company makes a desired profit:
(1) by performing a task considered valuable to its customer base & (2) by being
considered different from ones competitors in a manner that is appreciated by
that base.

Historic diagnosing evaluations of past
successes/failures, are not much fun but
it is an exercise, properly addressed, that
can make a great deal of sense in building
a differentiation model.
Take the past 5-10 (the more the better) growth investments and ascertain
what they have in common. Determine
your most important differentiators in
these growth initiatives by screening your
judgments through these sets of fundamental questions:
Are they truly distinctive?

Are they measurable (quantifiable)
vs. competitors?
Are they pertinent to your core customer deliverable?
Are they mutually reinforce able?
Are they obvious to all levels of the
organization?
Once this very difficult process is complete and thoroughly tested at all levels of
the company, one has a formula for focusing on innovation. Innovation in this case
refers to the complete spectrum of business
activity . . . not just technical innovation.
Additionally, it is very important not
only to recognize your differentiation but
also to test the sources of competitive innovation and its potential affect on your

key differentia table position. Experience


indicates that when your position is
strong and has a defensible position, even
disruptive innovations will affect only
one part of a business model.
Replicating successful differentiation models is a key and time-consuming
tactic to successful strategic positioning.
Markets are changing faster than ever
experienced in the past. For example,
coatings and adhesives designed for rigid
packaging (metal cans, etc.) must change
dramatically when a rigid package loses
to a flexible packaging design. Those

formulators (and suppliers to formulators) who supplied an interior coating for


a beer/beverage can may lose business if
it cannot bring a new coating/adhesive
system to the flexible beer pouch in this
transfer dynamic. Equally important is
being able to keep up with the flexible
packaging design change frequency versus the very slow-to-change rigid packaging changes.
Therefore, to be a successful market
differentiator, constant and rapid change
in your markets must be accompanied by
swift learning and adjustment. CW

The Industrial
Coatings Market
The market for industrial and protective coatings has potential for growth in a number of
key markets including construction, transportation and oil and gas.

ccording to market research firm IRL, general industrial coatings is estimated to have reached almost 7.6 million metric tons in 2015, with sales expected to reach
more than 8.9 million metric tons by 2020. In terms of value,
global sales of general industrial coatings reached $23 billion
in 2015. Asia accounted for the largest share of the market
despite having a substantially lower average price compared
to Western economies. Europe followed Asia closely in terms

of the revenue generated, although with a substantially lower


volume sold.
According to IRL researchers, solvent-based coatings still account for the majority of the sales, although they have been losing share in favor of powder and water-based coatings. Most of
the market value was generated by sales of general finish coatings, followed by coil and extrusion. Metal packaging and coil
coatings had the highest average prices.

Global performance for the industrial coatings market was
mixed last year, said Shelley Bausch, PPG vice president,
Global Industrial Coatings. Results varied significantly geographically and across segments. We saw steady growth in
the U.S. and Europe, but Brazil, the largest market in South
America, was down significantly due to the continued economic and political challenges.
Chinas economic performance was affected by a slowdown in their construction market and a slowdown in exports,
Bausch added. From a segment perspective, the oil and gas
sectors were down globally, of course, and we saw continued
challenges in the agricultural segment. Agricultural equipment production was down more than 20 percent globally and
this downturn has continued into 2016 market performance.
Slowdowns in these segments affect industrial coatings activities
in heavy-duty equipment, transportation, and pipe and tubing.
Fortunately, the diversity and global nature of our business enabled us to have a good year despite some of these headwinds.
Automotive builds continued strong their strong performance in
all geographies, and globally, coil and extrusion benefitted from
low steel prices and increasing new builds.
AkzoNobels Protective Coatings business, which supplies
anticorrosive and fire production coatings and services to industrial steel structures, including oil and gas, power generation,
other industrial installations, and commercial buildings, reported that volume development has been positive overall, reflecting strength in several key markets, such as power. However,
that has been offset by lower capital spending in the global oil
and gas industries, said Kerstin Stranimaier, marketing director, Protective Coatings at AkzoNobel. Power generation and
downstream oil and gas markets are still growing, and there is
particularly strong growth in the offshore wind power market,
where AkzoNobel is the clear market leader. There is also strong
demand for differentiated product and service offerings; in the
oil and gas sector; we are helping our customers further extend
asset life via proactive maintenance programs, including our
Interplan tool.
Axalta considers industrial coatings a thriving market. We
made it our priority to launch a significant number of new products and customers programs in the segments we focused on
over the past year, said Michael Cash, senior vice president and
president industrial coatings, Axalta Coating Systems. This effort opened up a large amount of opportunity to increase our
customer base.
According to Dave T. Zelch, global business director, metal
and plastics, Product Finishes Division, The Sherwin-Williams
Company, it was not a bullish year in terms of overall growth
but he did see significant opportunities ahead, especially as customer footprint and their markets continue to expand globally.
The industrial coatings market has opportunities for growth
in a number of segments including architectural, transportation,
oil and gas and construction.
According to Bausch, although the automotive sector is cyclical, PPG sees continued strength and growth in that segment

as builds continue to increase, particularly in parts of Europe,


China, and India. Over the next two years, PPG expects significant growth to come from segments that have been trending downward.
Were already seeing signs of recovery in the agricultural
sector, Bausch noted. End equipment sales are starting to turn
positive which is a leading indicator for the coatings industry.
Much like the oil situation, there is a large amount of inventory to work through before we will see a resulting uptick in
production, but it will come, likely in late 2017, and the macro
trends for the sector are positive. Theres also good news in the
construction segment. China reported its first uptick in commercial new construction last month (April), and were seeing
moderate growth continue in the U.S. and Europe. Those are all
positive indicators for coatings segments such as coil, extrusion,
appliances, and heavy duty equipment.
The outlook for the energy, construction and transportation segments is very favorable, said Zelch. Accelerating demand for traditional and renewable energy infrastructure in the
developing world, combined with an aging infrastructure in the
developed world, makes that a stable and continuous growth
market for us. While economic indicators for agriculture and
construction equipment (ACE) remain soft, this customer base
looks for an extended product lifecycle, giving us the opportunity to innovate and grow that base. Our strategic focus on
underbody/underhood in the truck and bus segment also has a
very positive outlook due to the need for longer lifecycles and
higher performance coatings.
With construction on the upswing, there is noticeable opportunity in the architectural segment, noted Cash. In line
with this, weve had success in this segment with our global approach, new products and new warranties. Our extensive Alesta,
Abcite and Nap-Gard powder products along with AquaEC
electrocoats, Ganicin primers and Voltatex Energy Solutions liquid coatings meet different niches around the world. At Axalta,
we feel that all of the segments are positioned well for growth
due to the global need and prioritization of new technology and
innovation. There is global demand for more efficiency, corrosion protection, durability and overall support in helping our
customers meet the specific needs of their customers. We see this
as opportunity across all of our Industrial end user segments.
According to Klaus Mller, group vice president, Group
Protective Marketing at Hempel, globally, the market for
Protective coatings has been impacted significantly by the slowdown in the oil industry, where a significant number of projects
requiring protective coatings have been cancelled and very limited new projects are put on stream. Most other key segments
within civil construction, power generation and industrial manufacturing remain more or less in the same shape as in previous
years. Civil construction and infrastructure probably represent
the biggest market potential within the protective segment.

Two of the major performance trends PPG is seeing are demands for increased corrosion-resistance and more advanced
coatings that have the versatility and robustness to perform well
on complex substrates. That means surfaces made with multiple
mixed metals, plastics and other materials, or those processed
with differing pretreatment regimens.
Another key need is for robust products that are available
globally, said Bausch. As our customers operate coatings lines
in different parts of the world and as they outsource their activities, we need to develop and supply products that produce
consistent quality and color regardless of their line conditions
whether their lines are in
warm, humid climates or in
cold, dry climates or even
in different environmental
conditions as their plants
change throughout the day.
Bausch noted that meeting the demand for customers who want to make their
own products more sustainable is also importat. That
could mean more reflective
cool roof coatings for the
building industry or better
high-performance primers
that help automakers use

lighter-gauge metals for fuelefficiency. Overall, the push internally and from our customers
is for better durability, enhanced surface functionality, more environmentally advanced coatings and on-going innovations in
design and color.
Customers are looking for more sustainable and durable
protection from their coatings and fire protection systems, as
well as better color retention and chemical resistance, said
Stranimaier. We are placing increased emphasis on working
with our customers to understand their needs, whether it is for
new projects, OEM or maintenance and repair.
According to Cash, the Axalta customer is looking for a
competitive edge through new innovative colors, improved performance and comprehensive support. Theyre looking for a
partner rather than a supplier, so service and customer support
are key, he added. As a paint company with 150 years of experience, its our mission to understand our customers products,
and their customers, as well as they do. We are driven to surpass
their expectations aesthetically and functionally.
Protective coatings applicators continue to look for ease
when using coatings as well as productivity in their workflows
to save time and labor, while limiting environmental impact,
said Mller. The coatings must support this in order to create
value for our customer. The end users that will own and operate the assets which have been coated, look for long-lasting
asset protection that will limit total cost of ownership and
operation. This means coatings that last as long as possible
before repairs and maintenance are needed; hence, reducing

direct maintenance cost and interruptions that result in expensive downtime of their operations.

Making the switch to water


Although solventborne coatings are still widely used in the industrial sector, as environmental regulations become increasingly stringent throughout the world, more users are looking
for alternatives.
We are seeing a shift in demand towards higher-solids
and waterborne products across the world, and particularly
in China and India where environmental legislation is tightening, said Stranimaier. The
challenge is to ensuring we
can offer right balance of
product and environmental
performance.
Axalta reports that it
remains conscious that the
global market has specific
application needs and requirements. We make it
a priority to offer a widerange of environmentallyconscious products, from
powder coatings with zero
VOCs and targeted HAPs to
leading edge AquaEC waterborne coatings to ultra-high
solids solventborne coatings our intention is to offer an environmentally-friendly product portfolio that meets every customers need, said Cash.
Sherwin-Williams views this global shift from solvent- to
water-based coatings as an opportunity for growth. For those
of us who have mastered the complexities of managing technologies globally, these pressures actually present valuable opportunities for bringing innovations to market, said Zelch.
Although we are a global company, global regulation is not
universal, so reinvention and being in position for whats next
are constants. We broaden the definition of environmental to
address not only curbing emissions, but also managing raw materials around the trend to restrict the use of materials deemed
too hazardous for use in and on products, particularly consumer
electronics and biomedical applications.
Environmental legislation continues to push innovation in
the coatings industry, yet even in the absence of such influences,
PPG noted it would be pursuing these developments based on its
own corporate-wide commitment to sustainability.
From a customer standpoint, one of the things that sets PPG
apart is the ability to leverage our expertise across all technology
platforms to help OEMs and their suppliers find the right solutions to any challenge, whether theyre related to environmental compliance, manufacturing or product performance, said
Bausch. And based on our capabilities, we take a multi-faceted
approach to this challenge. First, we still believe strongly in the
viability of liquid coatings at PPG. Thats why were continuing

to invest in the development of high-solid low-VOC formulations that will enhance the sustainability of liquid coatings for
generations to come.
Where we have the opportunity to best meet our customers
performance and application needs with waterborne coatings,
we are using our PPG waterborne technology platform to offer product solutions, Bausch continued. In both coil and in
some electronics applications, this is moving quickly. In developing regions, where we and our customers are not constrained
by current application lines, powder coatings offer another
substitute to solvent-based coatings. We are seeing this as a
strong trend in Southeast Asia. And finally, E-Coat technology
is also an alternative to the challenges of solvent-based coatings.
Obviously this depends on the segment, the substrate, and the
design of the parts to be coated, but we are finding applications
that historically have not used e-coat, such as pipe or containers,
are now interested and working with us to develop and execute
a change to this technology.

New Products
AkzoNobel recently launched a range of Chartek fire protection
coatings for the oil and gas sector that offer self-reinforced fire
protection. This provides weight-savings advantages coupled
with faster application.
Axalta Coating Systems recently launched AquaEC 6100
electrocoat coatings designed to improve customers productivity and reduce application costs. The AquaEC range of electrocoat primers use patented epoxy-based technology to provide
superior corrosion resistance with excellent throw power and
improved edge protection, said Cash. This tin-free technology
used in AquaEC 6100, now available globally, also helps meet
environmental goals. The U.S.-made AquaEC 6100 E-Coat also
received Caterpillar approval to their specification 1E2732F.
Towards the end of last year, we introduced a non-acidic and
formaldehyde-free Voltatex electrical steel varnish formulated
to reduce costly shutdown periods during maintenance inspections, increasing our customers efficiency. In the architectural
segment weve experienced great success in the launch of our
Alesta Anti-Graffiti outdoor powder coatings, where our customers experienced outstanding exterior durability due to the
excellent chemical resistance, UV weathering and film hardness
of the coating. Its weather and chemical resistance makes it an
ideal protective coating for finishes exposed to graffiti as well as
extreme conditions such as dirt and smog. Axalta is also pleased
to announce the release of the Nap-Gard 7-2500 series, which
brings industry recognized FBE powder coatings into one group
and expands the benefits of our thermosetting epoxy powder for
onshore and offshore oil and gas pipelines.
Sherwin-Williasm recently launched KEM NISO 8510 system, a high-durability isocyanate-free topcoat system with an
ambient cure of 15 minutes and Polane D 8700 coating, which
provides the high durability of a urethane in a single direct-tometal step. Our newest powder offering is our patent pending introduction of the Powdura OneCuresystem, a two-coat
powder system, applied in a single bake cycle, allowing for the

combination of multiple chemistry layers. This allows finishers


to reduce energy use, labor and maintenance costs while increasing throughput, Zelch noted.
Hempel recently launched Hempadur 4774D, a product for
the wind power industry. Hempadur 4774D allows wind tower manufacturers to reduce their coating schemes from three to
two layers, hence reducing throughput time in their manufacturing process, while maintaining excellent corrosion protection
properties, said Mller.
Hempel is also redefining anti-corrosion with the continuing expansion of our Avantguard range of protective zinc epoxy
primers, Mller added. Based on activated zinc technology,
our patented Hempadur Avantguard coatings have been proven
to deliver significantly higher galvanic corrosion protection than
zinc epoxies without activated zinc technology. The unique formulation also enhances the coatings mechanical strength and
offers greater working tolerances, to set a new standard for protection in tough C4 and C5 corrosive conditions.
PPG has several new products in the pipeline.
DRAGONHIDE ZRE primer is a zinc-rich primer for the
automotive market with a proprietary self-healing technology that makes underbody parts for cars more corrosion- and
impact-resistant.
There are also SPECTRACRO SPU conductive and nonconductive urethane primers. These are the first liquid primers
that can be applied over multiple plastic substrates, including
METTON-type and sheet-molded composite plastics. That
fulfills one of the goals I mentioned earlier, which is to help
customers streamline their quality control and production process, said Bausch. Last year, we launched POWERCRON
ADVANTEDGE electrocoat, featuring a heavy-metal-free catalyst technology. This product was originally formulated to help
the customer achieve REACH compliance in Europe, but now
that it is out in the field, were realizing that it is helping them
to achieve some other amazing environmental benefits as well.
Well be announcing more about that soon.
In Southeast Asia, PPG recently launched a new waterborne coil coating technology in the building and construction segment. The development of this product line was
in collaboration with a key customer and resulted in a differentiated, environmentally friendly solution with increased
throughput and productivity on line, said Bausch. In addition, collaboration with the customer on this innovation
accelerated the product development time significantly. In
the electronic materials market, we launched VELVECRON
SR (stain-resistant) coating, a clear two-component urethane
topcoat. Based on proprietary PPG resin and coatings technologies, Velvecron SR coating is designed to unite a soft,
luxurious feel with unparalleled stain resistance for plastic
and mixed-material finishes. Although this product was
developed initially for electronic materials, we expect to leverage this technology across other segments that value stainresistance, such as athletic equipment, appliances, automotive
parts and accessories, game consoles, furniture, display products and more. CW

Regional demand is likely to exceed GDP in the region.

he regional demand for paint and coatings in Latin


America (including Mexico) is likely to exceed gross
domestic product growth (GDP) in the region, forecast at only 0.2 percent this year. In the recent past, paint and
coatings growth has moved one to two percent faster than the
GDP, but it seems far less likely that this year will follow suit
on a regional basis.
2015 was a tough year from which to recover, and the process
is not over. The Latin American and Caribbean regions GDP
contracted by 0.4 percent in 2015, which translated into a 1.5
percent downturn in per capita GDP, the poorest performance
since 2009, opined Daniel Titelman, chief of the economic development division of Economic Development Division of the
Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
(Eclac), in Santiago.
More optimistically, We believe that we will see growth this
year at moderate levels in Latin America varying by country, (although) economic indicators predict further contraction. Even
though the economic conditions in Brazil remain challenging,
PPG has seen growth within portions of our portfolio due, for
example, to some of our competitors in the automotive refinish
sector exiting the market, said Tim Knavish, PPG senior vice
president, automotive coatings, who also oversees PPGs Latin
America operations.
Matthew N. Winokur, the vice president of corporate
affairs at Axalta Coating Systems, in Philadelphia, said
Reflecting our confidence in the long term prospects in the
region, we continued to invest there. We hope to capitalize
on opportunities in all the end-use markets we serve across
the region.

Major Players Report Varied Results


AkzoNobels CFO Maelys Castella said in an April earnings call
that their decorative paints business saw revenues decline 27
percent in Latin America to 101 million (about $114 million),
during the first quarter of 2016. The company reported in its
2015 annual report that Performance Coatings revenue was
up seven percent, driven by favorable price/mix and currencies.
Volumes were down two percent across the segments, impacted
by market developments in Brazil and ongoing spending declines in the global oil and gas industry. Akzo-Nobel claims to
lead the Latin American market for decorative paints, and suggests that the combined segments in the region represents about
10 percent of its global sales, which were 14.9 billion (about
$16.8 billion) last year.
BASF reported in its third-quarter 2015 report that regional
coatings sales were affected by the depreciation of the Brazilian
real, together with weaker demand (and) considerably reduced
sales in the decorative paints business in Brazil. Earnings declined slightly, as South America observed lower volumes and
negative currency effects in all business areas.
BASF began the implementation of its 2025 Strategy - South
America two years ago, with a sales target of 9 billion (about
$10.2 billion) in South America. Since 2011, BASF will have
invested 1.2 billion (about $1.4 billion) in infrastructure on
the continent by 2017, including 500 million (about $565 million) for the construction of the Acrylic Complex in Camaari,
Bahia State.
PPG reported that during 2015, Latin America sales volumes
grew 3.5 percent year-over- year. In addition to the organic growth,
acquisitions, led by Comex, added about 6.0 percent to net sales.

RPM also reported lower sales in Latin America: Out of
$1.03 billion in global sales, Latin American sales were up 15
percent in the third quarter of 2014. Last year, sales were down
14 percent during the third quarter on similar sales, the company annual report indicated.
Sherwin-Williams also suffered in the region last year because of Unfavorable currency translation rate changes in the
year, (which) decreased net sales by 19.3 percent for 2015to
$631 million, the 2015 annual Sherwin-Williams report said.
Paint sales volume percentage decreased in the mid-single digits as compared to 2014.
In 2015, S-Ws Latin America Coatings Group opened
17 new stores and closed 2 locations for a net increase of 15
stores, increasing the total to 291 stores open in North and
South America at year-end, the Sherwin-Williams report said.
Sales in gallons from the Dedicated Dealer program grew 17.1
percent, as the program expanded by 86 new stores in 2015.
The Group now has a total of 866 dedicated outlets in Latin
America, the report said.

Central America/Caribbean Growth


Leaders
Compared to the larger economies, a broad collection of smaller
country economies are doing relatively well in the region this
year, led by the expected 6.2 percent GDP growth in Panama,
due to open its rebuilt Panama Canal as soon as June. Similarly,
both the Dominican Republic and Dominica are demonstrating 5.2 percent GDP growth, built out of strong tourism and
rebounding manufacturing.
Over the last two decades, the Dominican Republic
has been standing out as one of the fastest economies in the
Americas, with an average real GDP growth rate of 5.4 percent between 1992 and 2014, Eclac reported. The Dominican
Republic has become the primary hot spot in Caribbean tourism, and continues to grow as an export assembly site, sparking new housing and infrastructure construction. Exports from
DR alone amounted to $9.6 billion last year. Foreign direct
investment (FDI), meanwhile, is expected to average 4 percent
of GDP this year, or close to $3 billion compared to the $67
billion economy.
To pursue the Central American/Caribbean market, PPG
acquired Consorcio Latinoamericano in 2015, which operates a network of 60 paint stores in Central America. At
the end of 2015, architectural coatings-Americasoperated
about 100 company-owned stores in Central America, the
annual report said. The purchase enables PPG to leverage an extended stores network to grow the Glidden brand
in Panama and offer additional PPG products to customers throughout the Central America region, says Silvey.
PPG operates company-owned paint stores across Belize, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and
Panama. The company also anticipates additional annual
revenue synergies via the Comex acquisition of between $60
and $70 million in Central America by 2019, PPGs annual
report stated.

Axalta also is investing in the sub-region. Axalta has also


increased its ownership in Axalta Coating Systems CA, a joint
venture, headquartered in Guatemala, observed Winokur.
And Pintuco is expanding its 150-store base in Venezuela,
Ecuador, the Antilles, Curacao and the Central American
countries.

Argentina
In Argentina, the expectation for paint and coatings growth
beyond the predicted GDP increase of 0.8 percent this year
is low. However, HSBC predicts that potential growth in
GDP for 2017 could reach 3.5 percent. We expect slightly
positive growth in Argentina, said Knavish. Others agreed:
Despite macro-economic headwinds in the region, our performance was solid inArgentina, Akzo-Nobels 2015 annual report stated.
Majors are continuing investment in Argentina. We are
nearing completion of a new manufacturing facility in Argentina
which will produce coatings for OEMs, refinish and industrial
customers, says Winocur.
In November 2015, Fabin Gil, the new president of Dow
Latin America, suggested that Argentinas Bahia Blanca complex
could become Dows third major polyethylene project, globally.
Growth in Argentinas gas and oil industry led to the award
of a $55 million dollar contract for ShawCor, which expected
to complete work earlier this year on anti-corrosion pipeline
coatings for Tenaris, for its part in the Argentina Northeast Gas
Pipeline (GNEA) project.

Brazil
In contrast, in Brazil, the expectation for paint and coatings
growth is minimal, given the expected GDP decrease of -2.0 percent this year, at least until recovery from impeachment takes
place. Brazils paint and coatings industry is going through a
third very tough year, unprecedented in recent history, reckons
Dilson Ferreira, the executive president of the national manufacturers association Associacao das Fabricantes de Tintas, or
Abrafati, in Sao Paulo. Building and construction expects no
recovery this year. The automotive industry anticipates that
sales will remain the same as in 2015, far below the average for
the past several years, he reckoned.
The total volume of paint sold in Brazil was down 5.6 percent in 2015, with associated net revenues of $3.05 billion, significantly lower than 2014 value, due in substantial part to the
depreciation of the Brazils currency, the real, which has plummeted 40 percent over the recent past.
Over the past year, AkzoNobel opened a new Expancel microsphere production line within its paint and coatings complex
in Jundia, Sao Paulo State, with the aim of serving both the
Brazilian and regional market demand.
Similarly, In 2015, PPG completed a $40 million plant for
on-site resin production at its Sumar, So Paulo State, coatings
manufacturing facility, which will help PPG to meet the demand
of automotive and industrial customers with locally produced
material, said Knavish.

Another encouraging note for Brazilian industry is that during the coming year Abrafatis annual paint and coatings show
will move to a new, larger, more modern venue in 2017, supported by large investments by new show developer GL Events.

Colombia
Colombias economy expanded by 3.1 percent last year, following 4.0 percent results for many years. Still, We anticipate that
activity in Colombia will likely be flat, said Knavish.
Among other new developments in the market, Axalta
launched the second edition of the Axalta Colors Partners Club
in Colombia, which it calls the first loyalty program in Latin
America, Winocur said. This program is intended to share innovative techniques with hundreds of automotive refinishers in
Colombia through training designed to help them strengthen
their skills and capabilities.
On the company stores front, Pintuco set a goal of adding 35
Tienda Pintacasa Pintuco stores during 2015, increasing coverage to 57 cities in Colombia. The goal up to 2018 is to increase
the store count to 300, according to statements by Jean Jeaques
Thiriez, the general manager of Pintuco.
Similarly, DIY chain Sodimac Colombia, the countrys largest, is also investing in new stores. The company issued $160
million worth of shares in July 2015 to finance new investments. Among new facilities is a $25 million distribution center
in Colombia, the companys third. Sodimac now has 35 stores
across the country.

Mexico
In Mexico, the expectation for paint and coatings growth is
beyond the expected GDP increase of 2.6 percent this year.
Investments there are heating up.
In April 2016, we opened an expanded resin production
facility in Tlalnepantla, just outside of Mexico City, from which
we will supply many of the leading automotive OEMs in Mexico
among other customers, noted Winocur. At the manufacturing
facility in Apodaca, Nuevo Leon State, we inaugurated a newly
refurbished technology and R&D center for powder coatings in
2015, he adds.
For PPG, Mexico continues to be a strong market. In the
first quarter, PPG sales were up approximately 5.0 percent in
Mexico, in pesos, he said. We also completed a $27 million
expansion of its San Juan del Rio, Queretaro State manufacturing facility in 2015. The additional capacity enables PPG to
meet increasing demand for OEMs, packaging and industrial
coatings customers in Mexico, notes Knavish.
PPG-Comex last year added 190 paint stores in Mexico.
Today, we have more than 4,100 stores and we plan to add
more than 160 stores this year. The PPG-Comex team has its
highest store density in Central Mexico, while we are enhancing
our presence in Southern and Northern Mexico with new store
concepts, Knavish explained. CW

Diversified trends in automotive colors and increased consumer competition are driving
this market forward.

he global metallic pigments market is expected to reach


$1.20 billion by 2022, according to a report by Grand
View Research (GVR) in March. This growth is largely
attributed to changing consumer preferences towards fashionable products with enhanced colors and brilliant visual effects.
Technological advancements have introduced high-luster and
sparkling effects with increased durability for automotive OEM
processing and paint refinishes, researchers found.
These odorless pigments are also widely utilized in other
expanding end-use industries such as packaging, cosmetics and
printing inks, particularly in emerging economies of China and
India, the report stated. Increasing consumer awareness regarding sustainability and environmental friendly nature of
these pigments has also benefited the overall market.
Aluminum pigments emerged as the leading product segment
and accounted for over one third of the total market volume in
2014. Copper pigments are expected to be the fastest growing
product segment growing at a CAGR of 5.7 percent from 2015
to 2022. These pigments are rapidly gaining popularity due to
their ability to impart a unique gold-bronze effect to various
substrates, researchers found.
Suppliers report growth in the early part of 2016, and believe there is reason to be optimistic moving into 2017. Aaron
Hollman, global director of effect pigments, Sun Chemical,
said that metallic effects continues to be a growth area for
Sun Chemical.
In the past several years, we have seen tremendous growth
of our Benda-Lutz brand of metallic pigments and preparations, Hollman said. Our goal is to continue to expand the
use of both decorative and functional metallic effects into new
applications and unknown markets through innovation. We are
very excited about our pipeline of new products. By delivering
true added value for our customers, we can continue this upward growth trend in 2016 and beyond.
Frank Nataro, VP, sales & marketing, Americas & Europe,
Silberline Manufacturing Co., Inc., said that while aluminum
pigments have seen a slight decline, colored metallics are gaining
in popularity.

Aluminum pigments have slightly declined due in large part


to the decline of straight silver in the global color popularity for
automobiles, he said. Colored metallics are becoming more
popular as high chroma colors such as metallic reds, blues and
greens are gaining favor, specifically in the automotive coatings
market. The declines we have seen in the automotive market due
to color popularity have been somewhat offsetby demand for
new silver aesthetics and technology approvals and an increase
in industrial and vacuum metalized flake markets.

Green trends
As consumers and manufacturers become more focused on
the environment, suppliers are challenged with meeting sophisticated technical demands while utilizing green methods.
Thomas Hughes, head of key account management and automotive coatings, ECKART America Corporation, said that
both environmental regulations and cost are the major factors
impacting this industry.
Our development efforts are aligned with the market and
our customer needs in order to provide increased value with
our technical solution offerings, Hughes said. The demand
for environmentally-friendly coatings continues and we support
this with our technical leadership position with stabilized and
encapsulated pigments for water based coatings systems and
pigments for powder coatings.
Silberlines Nataro said that stricter environmental regulations have forced metallic pigment suppliers to modify their
processes and materials in order to provide pigments that can
pass all regulatory testing and offer low to zero VOC.
There is also a push for further reduction of aromatic
content in the carrier solvent in some metallic pigments,
along with more and more pressure to test and ensure that
PAH levels are within regulations for the different markets,
he said. Silberline is continuing to see more efficient coating
applications, imparting thinner film builds and less overall
paint being required to paint a vehicle, while retaining excellent color and performance. Finer and brighter continues to
be the message.

Ron Levi, president of New Brook International, said that by
far, the most important factors are the environmental, shipping
and handling regulations, which he says have gotten much stricter.
The cost of doing business with these products has risen
considerably and has been passed along to the customers down
the line, Levi said.
Raw material costs are one contributing factor to price increases in a multitude of industries. Sun Chemicals Hollman
said that effectively managing raw material costs is critical to
maintaining stable pricing for our customers.
He added, The last 12 months have seen many changes
in supply, currency exchange rates and the price of petroleum
derived goods. Our global manufacturing team has invested in
designing production processes with a high degree of flexibility.
This flexibility allows us to globally source raw materials and
utilize our global manufacturing footprint to consistently deliver quality, service and innovation in this highly volatile period.

Emerging markets
Metallic pigments are versatile, eye-catching and increasingly
utilized to differentiate products in competitive markets. Strong
markets have historically included industrial and automotive
markets. According to Silberlines Nataro, there is also demand
in protective coatings markets, automotive OEM and refinish
coatings. Metallic printing inks are also adding flash and pizzazz to packaging and paper, creating new effects that catch the
eye, he said.
Hughes, of ECKART, said that there is steady demand in the
automotive and the electronics segments in spite of the decline
in pure silver in the automotive sector.
However, we continue to see an increase in the use of metallic and special effects in designed colors, he said. For example more metallic blues, reds and other colors. We expect
this to increase in the future along with the use of more pure
silver metallic based on the development of the new pigments
we are developing.
The automotive segment, which has been the key driver for
global metallic pigment demand, has remained steady in North
America and is showing modest gains in Europe, according to
Hollman of Sun Chemical.
Sun Chemical has seen strong demand for Benda-Lutz
SPLENDAL vacuum metallized pigments for high end automotive interiors. We are also seeing increased usage of our new high
performance stain resistant metallics for wheel coatings. For
topcoats, new color trends emerge every year, Hollman said.

Affecting Cobalt and MEKO

eing a formulator is becoming


much more difficult in light of increased regulatory pressures on
common raw materials. Formulators
who develop coatings based on oxidatively cured (alkyd) binders face major
regulatory obstacles for two key ingredients: methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO)
anti-skinning additive and cobalt-based
driers. MEKOs toxicity makes it difficult
to meet safe exposure limits due to its
volatility. Cobalt carboxylates are being
pressured to be classified as carcinogens.
In this paper we discuss potential nontoxic alternatives to both of these materials with supporting test results.

Binders that Cure via


Oxidation
Drying oils and alkyd resins have many
advantages over other binders used in the
coatings industry. They are bio-renewable, inexpensive and extremely stable.
Alkyds can be used to formulate coatings
which have long open times for easier application, yield relatively hard films for
kitchens and baths, require minimal surface preparation and provide good stain
blocking properties, particularly over water-based stains, inks and markers. Waterbased versions of these binders have been
developed to meet VOC regulations, have
low odor and water clean-up. Alkyd resins are used in architectural, light duty

industrial, wood care, printing inks and


automotive aftermarket coatings.
Drying oils, alkyd resins and epoxy esters have certain things in common. They
all contain some degree of unsaturation
(double bonds) and hydroxyl/carboxyl
functionality which are used to promote
curing. In the following example of a
common vegetable oil, the triglyceride
contains a range of organic acids which
have various degrees of unsaturation
(Figure 1). Those with more potential
crosslinking (unsaturation) sites, such as
linolenic acid, can be expected to dry faster and yield harder finishes, while binders
with high levels of oleic acid have few unsaturation sites and will yield softer, slow
drying films.

The Need for Driers


Atmospheric oxygen reacts spontaneously with the unsaturated fatty acid components of oils and alkyd resins generating
free radical reactions to eventually form
films (Figure 2). This process is called
autoxidation. However, if unaided, the
reaction rates are very slow.
Surface (or oxidative) driers catalyze
reactions by: deactivating the natural antioxidants found in drying oils by forming hydroperoxides; accelerating oxygen
absorption and peroxide formation; reacting with oxygen or hydroperoxides to
form complexes that catalyze oxidation
reactions; and acting as oxygen carriers. Surface driers are also susceptible to

redox reactions which can decompose hydroperoxides and promote crosslinking.

Metal Catalyzed Reactions


Adding metal catalysts greatly improves
the oxidation rate of the binder (Figure
3). When a metal catalyst is present, the
activation energy for oxygen uptake is
only 10% of the amount needed when
none is present. Peroxide formation also
proceeds more rapidly. Metal catalysts
aid in the decomposition of the peroxides
which accelerates free radical formation
to promote crosslinking.
Another advantage is that the lower
valence state of the metal is regenerated
making most oxidative metal carboxylates true catalysts which, unfortunately,
is not always a good thing as will be
discussed.

Metals Capable of Use in


Oxidative (Surface) Driers
There are only five metals that promote
oxidative or surface curing in some form.
Cobalt is the most common oxidative drier and has been commercially available
since the early 1900s. It exists in the two
valance states noted in Figure 3 which
helps it form coordination complexes
with oxygen and organic molecules. The
activity of cobalt driers is inhibited at
lower temperatures and its use in high
humidity drying conditions may promote
film wrinkling.

cobalt at low temperatures and also when
used in baking finishes, but not at ambient temperatures. It is mainly used in drying oils in combination with cobalt. As a
cobalt replacement, manganese requires
the addition of a drier accelerator like
1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2-bipyridyl
chelating additives to approach the activity level of cobalt. Films may develop a
brown colored hue on ageing due to the
color of the manganese drier.
Iron has no catalytic activity at room
temperature in air drying finishes but it is
more active than cobalt at elevated temperatures (130 C). The dark red color of
iron driers restricts its usage in coatings
to dark colors and red coatings.
Vanadium is efficient at lower temperatures but has a tendency to impart
a greenish stain to films. Unlike cobalt,
vanadium is more stable in its higher
valence state which inhibits its role in
oxidative curing and complex formation.
Higher levels are generally needed.
Cerium can promote oxidative curing
at elevated temperatures but is primarily
used as a through or coordinate drier.
Iron-Complex technology - A new
unique organic complex with iron has
yielded an oxidative drier which magnifies the drying activity of iron so that it
is effective over a wide range of temperatures and drying conditions. This new
iron-complex technology is more active
than cobalt, has a very light color and
promotes oxidative curing both at the
surface and throughout the film in many
binders.

Potential Cobalt ReClassification


Cobalt driers have been a regulatory concern for many years. Reproductive toxicity and the long term adverse effects on
aquatic organisms have been well known
and documented. As described above, cobalt driers are true catalysts in the oxidation process of air drying binders in that
they do not become part of the molecular
structure. Cobalt driers do not crosslink
into the film and also have some water
solubility so they will eventually leach
into the ground water supply when the
films come in contact with water. There is
also the growing concern that cobalt (as

cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate, at least) will be
classified as a carcinogen. Most European
paint manufacturers have already replaced cobalt in their formulations in anticipation of one or all of these concerns
being realized.

Cobalt Replacement
Strategies
Few viable options exist to replace cobalt
in alkyd and other air drying systems. As
noted above, only manganese and iron
complexes can approach cobalts activity level. Conventional iron, vanadium
and cerium carboxylate driers are not
effective replacements. Accelerated
manganese driers improve the activity
somewhat but may affect the color of
light tinted coatings over time and generate brittle films. However, a new ironcomplex drier has been developed to
equal or exceed the drying performance
of cobalt and at reduced levels. The catalytic reaction mechanisms of cobalt and
the iron-complex driers have been shown
to be the same, however the efficiency of
the iron-complex drier is so high that less
oxygen is needed to promote oxidative
cure throughout the film, not just on the
surface as do the cobalt carboxylates.

Iron Complex Drier - FeLT


The new iron-complex drier is an effective oxidative drier for a wide variety of
binder systems, particularly alkyd emulsions. Figure 4 shows the surface dry
time and Pendulum hardness test results
of several cobalt and manganese-based
driers compared to the iron-complex drier in a long-oil alkyd resin.
The test systems were evaluated for
dry initially and after one week exposure
at 40 C. Pendulum hardness tests were
run after one week cure. Note that the
new iron-complex developed faster surface drying at ambient temperatures than
any of the other products tested.
A major advantage of the iron-complex drier is its ability to promote improved oxidative cure under marginal
drying conditions which typically affect
conventional surface driers. In a white,
low-VOC high-solids alkyd-based formula, the iron-complex drier was not
only more effective than cobalt and

accelerated manganese-based driers under standard drying conditions, but also


was virtually unaffected in low temperature/high humidity environments where
the others experienced decreased activity
(Figure 5).
A major concern about coatings based
on alkyd and drying oil films is their tendency to yellow in the absence of UV
light. Typically a cocktail of through driers is necessary to reduce yellowing by
forming coordinate bonds with the lowmolecular-weight chromophores that
are generated during the curing process.
The additional through drying property
of the iron-complex drier greatly reduces
the films tendency to yellow as seen in
Figure 6.
Reduced yellowing is believed to be
due to the increased level of deep film

oxidative crosslinking from the higher activity of the iron-complex drier. However,
as with cobalt, coordinative driers like
zirconium may still be needed to promote
faster hardness values.

Summary of Cobalt
Replacement Driers
No other metal carboxylate drier can approach the oxidative activity of cobalt.
However, the iron-complex drier is a sustainable alternative to cobalt driers and
is not carboxylate-based. This product
is not CMR classified, can provide equal
or superior surface dry times to cobalt at
low levels under standard drying conditions, has improved efficiency in promoting surface curing under low temperature/
high humidity conditions and, due to its
additional through drying properties, can

Hyperplasia of the urinary bladder transitional epithelium was observed in mice
exposed to MEKO but not with a similar chemical, cyclohexanone oxime. For
MEKO, the no observed-adverse-effect
level (NOAEL) for erythrotoxicity is
312 ppm in the drinking water for rats
and 2,500 ppm for mice (see National
Toxicology Program, Toxicity Report
Series, Number 51, July 1999, NIH
Publication 99-3947).
Figure 7 shows part of the SDS for
MEKO with regard to Health Hazards
(2.1) and Label Elements (2.2).
The second method to prevent skinning involves using antioxidants to absorb free radicals in the coating. However,
these can severely inhibit oxidation and
affect curing and film appearance if excessive amounts are used. The coating can
only cure after the antioxidant has been
consumed (with free radicals), leaves the
film through evaporation or is driven off
during the bake cycle (if part of the curing system). These consist of substituted
phenolics, quinones, aromatic amines,
sterically-hindered aliphatic amines and
hydroxyl amines.
The most preferred anti-skinning additive would be non-toxic, have no regulatory concerns, have no effect on the cured
film and still prevent skin formation.

Additives in Paints
By adding driers to improve coating dry
times, we also increase the tendency of
the coating to cure prematurely whenever it comes in contact with air. This includes during the manufacturing, filtering
and filling processes. Adding driers also
means that less oxygen is needed to initiate surface curing which can affect longterm storage in the can. The coatings
industry developed additives to delay the
curing process to prevent skin formation.
The two main methods to prevent skinning are: (1) inhibit the catalytic activity

of the metal carboxylate and (2) absorb


the free radicals during autoxidation to
prevent crosslinking.
The first method involves using a
volatile material to form temporary complexes with the metal in the drier to block
its catalytic activity. The inhibitor evaporates quickly during film application
freeing the metal to function. The most
common chemical used for this is methyl
ethyl ketoxime (MEKO), or ketoximes
in general. They are especially effective
with cobalt, however, their high volatility
makes them a health concern. The major
toxicity is to erythrocytes and the hematopoietic system. Ketoximes cause similar lesions in the olfactory epithelium.

Most antioxidants are unsuitable for architectural and industrial applications


due to their side effects. However, a proprietary aminic compound has been developed which is non-toxic, volatile and
consumes free radicals. This advanced
antioxidant provides a controlled retardation of surface dry resulting in improved through dry without affecting
the film hardness. Another advantage is
that its activity is independent of the drier
metal. This new product is more volatile than other types of antioxidants, but
not as volatile as MEKO. It can be used
in clear and pigmented systems and has
been successfully marketed since 2002.

Aminic Complex
The health hazards associated with this
advanced antioxidant are minimal compared to MEKO as noted on its current

SDS (Figure 8).
Unlike MEKO, the proprietary aminic
complex is not harmful to humans and
only in concentrated form can be harmful
to aquatic life if discharged directly into
watercourses.

Comparative Testing to
MEKO
These advanced antioxidants were
evaluated for in-can preservation, film
surface drying and film hardness development vs MEKO. MEKO is completely
volatile and does not interfere with curing while all antioxidants remain, at least
for a period of time, in the film to function properly. In these tests, we chose
a simple, clear alkyd formula based on
a long-oil alkyd resin and used a drier
package consisting of 0.04% cobalt and
0.1% calcium metal based on resin solids.
Results are shown in Figure 9.
Although not as effective as MEKO
with this drier package, the advanced antioxidants at low levels provide excellent
anti-skinning properties to this test system.
The overall hardness and integrity
of the dried film was not compromised
initially or after one week using the advanced antioxidant complex at any of the
levels tested (Figure 10). This confirms
that it does not remain in the film to interfere with crosslinking and final cure.
There is a slight loss of surface dry
using the advanced antioxidant complex
which is due to its lower volatility compared to MEKO and the different mechanism for inhibiting oxidation (Figure 11).
Excessive amounts should be avoided for
these reasons.

Summary MEKO
Replacement
These less toxic alternatives to phenolic
and oximic antioxidants require less than
half the level of MEKO in most coatings
systems to provide effective anti-skinning
properties. They perform independently
of the oxidative metal drier and are recommended in cobalt replacement strategies. These advanced antioxidants are
suitable for clear and pigmented coatings
with no discoloration. However, the optimum level should be experimentally determined as excessive amounts may lead

to longer dry times due to their volatility
being less than that of MEKO.

Conclusions
Additives manufacturers have developed
less toxic alternatives to cobalt and MEKO
which are both more effective and efficient.
Cobalt Replacement Iron-Complex
technology is an effective and sustainable
alternative to cobalt driers with the following advantages: no CMR classification
issues; improved film curing properties
under adverse conditions (high humidity/
low temperature) compared to cobalt; and
dried films develop less yellowing compared to films cured using cobalt driers.
MEKO Replacement Effective, less toxic, aminic-based anti-skinning alternatives
are available with minimal loss of properties
if used at the appropriate levels. CW

Division) of Air Products and Chemicals,
Inc. for $3.8 billion (approximately. 3.5
billion), strengthening its leading position
on the high-margin specialty and coating additives market. The transaction is
intended to be completed by the end of
the year. It is expected that the acquisition will be EPS accretive for Evonik in
the 2017 business year.

and specialty surfactants for industrial
and institutional cleaning. They target
the same end customers, but with different and complementary products. For
instance, Evonik is a leader in PU foam
stabilizers while the Specialty and Coating
Additives business of Air Products is well
positioned in PU foam catalysts. Demand
for these products is rising strongly, and
the market for these additives will grow
far more quickly than overall demand for
chemical products.
Geographically, Evonik and the acquired division also complement each
other. While the focus of the Air Products
business is on North America and Asia,
Evonik is particularly strong in Europe.
With the current acquisition, Evonik
is crucially boosting its standing in the
North American market, allowing it to
serve the increasingly global activities
of its customers even more effectively.
At the same time, by growing in North
America and Asia, Evonik is reducing its
dependence on the European market and
therefore better protecting its own business against economic fluctuations in individual regions.
Like Evonik, Air Products Specialty
& Coating Additives business follows a
solution-oriented business model driven
by intensive interaction with customers in
research and development and outstanding technical service. The acquisition will
allow Evonik to significantly strengthen
its innovation leadership.
By optimizing production/logistics, marketing/sales and administration, Evonik expects to generate cost
synergies of 60 million US dollars per

Joncryl 8310 is a new high performance hydroxyl-functional acrylic dispersion with excellent appearance on a
range of wood substrates. Joncryl 8310
ensures good hardness in 1K systems

film clarity helps improve the appearance
of wood grains and is suitable for both

leaders Kraton Polymers and Sartomer
Company. Over the last 20 years, Pape
has gained deep experience across many
of Shamrocks key markets such as inks,
coatings and thermoplastics.
Pape earned an MBA from the
University of Rhode Island and a BS in
chemistry from Moravian College in
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He also completed executive education at the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania
including innovation, strategic alliances
and leading high-performance teams.

Jankowski joined H.J. Heinz Co., where

through finance leadership roles.

VersaFlex Launches South

Yarnelle has a long history in chemical
sales, including 16 years working for the

He also spent time as a sales representative for Sacco Mid-States and Hydrite

PPG Donates Paint for Final


Space Shuttle External Tank Journey

PG helped the California Science Center Foundation prepare the final space shuttle external tank for a six-week
ocean voyage by donating a military-grade paint matching the tanks foam covering to enhance appearance and protect against elements during its journey by barge from NASAs
Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans to Los Angeles.
Upon arrival in California, ET-94 the only existing flightqualified external tank will undergo cosmetic restoration for
display at the California Science Center along with the space
shuttle Endeavour.
DESOTHANE HS/CA 8211 series military and defense
topcoat manufactured at PPGs Mojave, California, plant was
tinted to match the burnt-orange foam by PPG aerospace coatings color experts. Loose foam was removed from ET-94 at
Michoud, and the PPG topcoat was applied by roller and brush
to cover gaps for a consistent appearance.
According to Duane Utter, PPG global segment manager for
space and defense coatings, PPG was asked to supply the paint
by Dennis R. Jenkins, project director overseeing the science
centers new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center who was a
contract engineer for the shuttle program and knew PPG was
the original primer supplier.
PPG was a proud partner in the space shuttle program
as the supplier of the only primer qualified for the external
tanks, Utter said. This primer passed cryogenic and corrosion testing and met requirements for foam adhesion. After

accepting the opportunity to supply the topcoat for the historic ET-94 journey, we matched the color of the foam, and our
sample was approved by the science center. We recommended
Desothane HS/CA 8211 series topcoat because of its matte appearance and durability.
PPGs primer, applied to the metal tanks for corrosion resistance and enhanced topcoat adhesion, was DESOTO 515x346
epoxy primer, Utter said.
Jenkins said it was important for ET-94 to look as nice as
possible. We wanted ET-94 to be protected from water on its
voyage and to look good during its long journey to the Samuel
Oschin Air and Space Center. The California Science Center is
very grateful for the support provided by PPG, one of the original external tank suppliers, in helping us with our work that will
enable people to see an important part of the shuttle program.
The 65,000-pound, 154-foot-long ET-94 was loaded onto a
barge in New Orleans and transported through the Panama Canal
for delivery to Marina del Rey, California, riding its last leg through
the streets of Los Angeles to the California Science Center.
Lockheed Martin built the external tanks, which carried propellants to power the shuttles main engines. Lockheed Martin
delivered ET-94 in 2001 to NASA, where the tank was stored.
The original standard-weight tanks were replaced by lightweight tanks and then super-lightweight tanks.
