Amanda Ohlstein
Third Grade
Inventions/Inventors
History/Social Studies
November 21st, 2016
1.1- Integration of Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to define and describe what an invention is and
how it differs from a discovery.
Students will be able to learn, recognize, and identify different
inventions around them and in their environment
Students will be able to talk about each invention and how it changed
the way people think and behave.
1.2- PA Standards and NCSS Standards
PA Standards: (PDESAS)
Science and Technology
3.4.3.A.2-Identify that some systems are found in nature and some
systems are made by humans.
NCSS Standards:
NCSSA1 - Identify and describe examples in which science and
technology have changed the lives of people such as in homemaking,
work, transportation, and communication.
(Individuals, groups and institutions and People places and
environments)
1.3- Anticipatory Set
To begin the introduction on inventions, the teacher will write the
following words on the board: telephone, fire, toothpaste, electricity,
gold, and tree.
The students will have to guess which of these from the list are
inventions without even knowing the definition of an invention. I will
give the students two minutes to discuss with a classmate and then we
will share as a class.
This will get the students interested in talking about inventions and
inventors. From this list the words tree and fire would not be

considered an invention since humans did not make them. These are
discoveries since they are found in nature.
1.4- Procedures
Write on the board, An invention is. and ask the class to brainstorm
answers.
I will also ask the students, Who can be an inventor? I will then call
on students to respond.
Listen for possible answers. Something new or
Something created by the actual person.
I will be looking for students to answer by saying either; something
new or something created by an actual person.
Write a definition on the board that students will be instructed to
write down in their notebooks. The definition will be created together,
but will include something to the degree of:
A creation of a device or process that results from
study or experimentation.
Ask students to look around the classroom and name inventions that
they notice. Keep a running record on the board
Ask if the students have ever read about any famous
inventors/inventions. Call on students to share and encourage them to
name the inventor and invention. Keep a running record on the board.
Point out a few famous inventors such as: Alexander Graham Bell,
The Wright Brothers, Henry Ford, Eli Whitney, and Thomas Edison.
The students will have to guess what each inventor was famous for.
Alexander Bell-Telephone
Henry Ford- First model t car
Thomas Edison- Light bulb
Eli Whitney- Cotton Gin
Wright Brothers- Airplane
I will divide the students into five groups. Each group will be assigned
a different inventor from the list above.
The students will use books and websites to help answer the questions
The questions will be as follows:
1. How does this invention help people?
2. How do you think this invention changed the way people lived
and still live today?

3. What kinds of things did this inventor need to know in order to

create their invention?
4. Would you consider this a successful invention?
The websites and books that they can use are as follows:
Groups will share information with each other about their research.
This would give the students in the class an opportunity to learn about
other inventions and inventors besides their own.

1.5-Differentiation
For those students who are above average: I would have these
students go into greater detail with their research. I would have these
students find books and websites on their own. I would also have
them write about their inventors qualities as well as their experiences.
For those students who are below average: I would give these
students assigned books and websites that contain the answers to the
questions. This would give students more of an opportunity to work
on the assignment and have them spend less time researching for
websites and books that contain the correct information.

1.6 - Closure
We will have the students complete an exit card about one thing they
learned from the lesson or about one new idea they learned.

1.7- Assessment
Formative Assessment: I will write three questions on the smart board
that the students will need to answer based upon their invention. They
will have to answer if there were any problems that occurred because
of this new invention, what the invention was, and how the invention
helped people. This will help me track the students progress.
Summative Assessment: There is no summative assessment for this
lesson because it is the first day that the students will be learning
about inventions. The students will just get an overview of different
inventors and inventions. I will not assess them on anything.
