Discussion of completed service learning project:

My Service Learning Project was a coordinating a greif counseling group at St. Lukes
and following up with home visits with the group members. The greif counseling
group I assisted with was completed on October 24 th and two home visits with group
members were completed on Wednesday October 26 th. Follow-up home visits were
performed to assess the risk of complicated grief and assist individuals with coping.
The first of the two home visits consisted of discussing enrolling their mentally
disabled adult child in respite care. She had reported in group that her husband and
her were feeling exhausted and looking to ways to alleviate some stress. One of the
group members recommended respite care and we offered to help her look into it. As
it turns out, we were able to find several options where their family could go and visit
the facility to see if their son would enjoy his time there while his parents got a much
needed break. The group member expressed great gratitutde for our help in locating
some possibilities. The second visit consisted of visiting a group member who
recently lost their pet. Unfortunately, her pet was very near and dear to her heart and
she was having a difficult time without her cat. We recommended volunteering at an
animal shelter to help fill the void of her lost cat.
Evaluation of the selected intervention:
The goal of grief counseling is to help group members to effectively cope with grief.
Through visits with two group members, we were able to help two people take steps
towards healing their grief. Both people have two very types of grief and it is
important to recognize that grief comes in many forms and a variety of different
coping mechanisms are necessary to successfully handle their grief. Each individual
was able to take effective steps towards uncomplicating their grief and coping
appropriately.

COMPLETED SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT

As a faith community nurse it is important to recognize various health needs within

your religious community whether that be specifically in your small community of a
single church or larger community of a group of churches. In this case, grief
counseling presents a real need. Grief can come in many forms helping parishioners
to recognize their grief and where they need assistance is of a chief concern for faith
community nurses. Anaebere tells us that because Faith Community Nurses engage
in routine interactions with their congregations, they will have a better understanding
of which services will be most readily used by their populations (p.339). This grief
counseling group and pair of home visits helped me to understand the role of a faith
community nurse in engaging their community and developing programs which meet
their needs.
In studies conducted about faith community nurses, parishioners reported that they
felt more comfortable with addressing their educational and health needs with
someone who is more familiar with them than a random nurse who is unfamiliar
(Shores, 2014). Through this project I learned to incorportate skills I developed at
professional collaborative sessions such as the Holy Crosss FCN fall meeting on
mindfulness and applying those skills to community enegagement. Professionals
coming together and developing each others skills ultimately benefits the community
in which they live.
