An organizing chart can help when using the Product Rule:
Note: in the Product Rule f '(x) is not the f '(x) of the original question, all books write the Product Rule with
h, f and g.
f(x) = (3x2 x)sin(x)
f '(x) =
f'
g'
When set up this way the Product Rule is the inside + the outside
f(x) = (6x4 -1)(-3x7 2x + 4)
f(x) = 3x7sin(x)
find f '(x)
2.3 2.4
Where did the Product Rule come from??
6x 3 x
f (x)
5x 2
f '(x) =
f (x)
f (x)
f '(x) g(x) f(x) g'(x)
then h '(x)
2
g(x)
g(x)
6x 3 x
find f '(x)
5x 2
Use same organizing chart. Same inside outside pattern but with and not + and with a denominator.
In The Quotient Rule f(x) must be the numerator and g(x) the denominator and you must start with f '(x).

find f '(x).
Note: all books show the PR to start with f and not f '. Because of all the multiplication and addition we can
switch orders and therefore have the numerator of the QR look very similar to the PR.

In an algebra class you might say that the above functions are the _____________________________ of two
functions. Not the sum, not the difference, not the product and not the quotient but the _________________.
We can find the derivative of sums, differences, products and quotients but not yet for

But since the original question was in x and y, so must the answer be.
y' = 20u19(12x2 2) and change everything back to y and x: y' = 20(4x3 2x)19(12x2 2)
We just did a nuther nuther new Rule. This rule is known as

For two reasons I tend not to use the notation that we used yesterday, when finding the derivative via the
chain rule.
Reason 1: It is really not _______________________.
Reason ___: When the problems get more complex, like f (x) sin 2 (3x 3 x) , this notation becomes
______________.
It is all about the word something, where something is sort of like u.
f(x) = sin(3x2 + 1)
With this approach even our original problem, f(x) = (4x3 2x)2, may be just as easily solved with The Chain
Rule as it was by expanding.
Notation for chain rule with Newton notation: If h(x) = f(g(x)) then h ' (x) =
