State Objectives
SOL 1.2 The student will describe the stories of American leaders and their contributions to our
country, with emphasis on George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, etc.
SOL 1.3 The student will develop map skills by:
a) recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities, and roads;
b) using cardinal directions on maps;
c) identifying the shapes of the United States and Virginia on maps and globes;

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods


Media:
Google Earth software (free download from http://earth.google.com) : The teacher will use Google
Earth to present the original 13 colonies and England
Computer with LCD projector and Internet connection: Teacher will use computer to navigate
google earth.
Access to the Internet for teacher and student-based research: Teachers can access Google Earth and
other learning materials
Presentation software such as PowerPoint: Show pictures and descriptions of Founding Fathers
Materials:
Wall World Map: Teacher will show students where The United States and Virginia are located on
map and discuss its physical characteristics
Map Worksheets: Have students break off into groups and color the state of Virginia
Crayons: Used to color maps
Library Books about the Founding Fathers: Students will break up into small groups and read a
book about a Founding Father
Methods
Whole group map skills to find geographic location of The United States and Virginia using Google
Earth: TTW Discuss how to use a map and important symbols.
Whole group introduction of Revolutionary War and Introduction of Founders: Tell the students they
are going to learn more about how America became and independent country.
Brainstorm and discuss what ideas and concepts the kids already know about the American
Revolution, how it began, who were the key figures, and any of the battles or events such as Paul
Reveres ride
Small group centers: TSW Work together to complete both small group projects
Require Learner Participation
Whole Group Map Skills:
Gather students around the World Map. Ask students if anyone knows where the United States is.
Then ask for someone to point out the State of Virginia. The teacher will then pull up Google Earth
on the projector and show students the two locations. The teacher will then teach students to
recognize basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities, and roads.
Whole Group Introduction of Founding Fathers:
The teacher will then explain who the founding fathers were and that many of them lived in Virginia.

The teacher will show pictures of prominent figures on a Power Point slide.
Whole Group Instruction for Small Groups
Explain to the students that they will be dividing, one group on circle mats, the other group at the
table. The group on the circle mats will be reading a story about the Founding Fathers and the group
at the tables will be coloring maps.
Small Group Center Activities:
TSW work in groups of five to collaborate both center activities. Each center rotation will last 15
minutes.
Map Coloring Locate The United States, Virginia, and symbols discussed on the map.
Story Telling- Teacher or Teacher Assistant will allow children to select a book out of the
center and listen to story.

Evaluate & Revise


Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated on each center activity as well as feedback given during group
discussion time. The main focus will be map skills. Students demonstrate an understanding of the
geographic locations if they color the correct locations on their maps.
Instructor Performance:
During the center activities the instructor can watch the students fill in their maps to see if they
comprehended the material. The teacher can also ask questions after the book reading to see if
students comprehended the lesson.
Media Performance:
The media will help to give the students and active representation of the globe. Gauge students ability
to focus and transfer the pictures on the screen to their coloring pages.
