The Internet
Anyone using computers for school, business, or personal use knows the difficulty of
keeping up with changing technology. Computers users are demanding that
microprocessors become faster and easier to use in order to keep up with the many
applications used today. Just when users thought they were catching up , the
Internet become popular
Defining the Internet
Networks have changed the way people communicate. Each day,
transactions are sent across high-speed connections to computers all over the world
via the Internet. A working definition of the internet follows:
The internet is an international Network of Networks comprised of
government, academic, and business- related networks that allow people at diverse
locations around the world to communicate through electronic mail, to transfer files
back and forth, and to log on to the remote computer facilities. (Odgers and Keeling
289)
Connecting to the internet
You must have a device called a modem to link your computer to other
computers through telephone or cable lines (Fulton- Calkins and Stutz 181). With
some connections, you need to have an account name and password to access the
Internet icon on your computers desktop.
If you are using the Internet at school or work, the organization is paying a
fee for doing so. If you want to access the Internet on your home computer, you will
need to subscribe to a commercial Internet service provider (often referred to as an
ISP). Most of these providers charge a monthly fee.
Using the internet
Once you have access the Internet, you will find many uses for it (Oliverio ,
Pasewark and white 98). You will want to establish an E-mail account so you can
send electronic messages to your friends and relatives who are also connected to

the Internet. You can also use E-mail to send word processing, spreadsheet,
database, and presentation files, including pictures, to others.

Retrieving information by using search engines or directions that enable you

search massive databases.
Using bulletin boards to read and post messages related to topics of interest
to you and others

Designing and posting a web page to provide to others internet users

information about yourself, your family, a club or organization, or a
business
