Ask them what they think is special about multiplying by 1? By 0? By 10?
Multiplying by 1 Start with an example: - Mark made five waffles and puts each one on a separate plate. How many plates does Mark use? Show me mathematically. Answer: 5 x 1=5 - How about six waffles? 6 x 1=6 - Seven waffles? 7 x 1=7 Ask them what is special about multiplying by one? Answer to look for: If one number in a multiplication problem is one, the answer will be the same as the other number. Multiplying by 0 Start with an example: -Mark has five empty plates. How many waffles are on each plate? Show me mathematically. Answer: 5 x 0=0 -How about six plates? 6 x 0=0 -Seven plates? 7 x 0=0 Ask them what is special about multiplying by zero? Answer to look for: When one factor in the equation is zero, the answer will be zero. Multiplying by 10 Start with an example: - Mark has five trays with ten waffles on each. How many waffles does Mark have in total? Show me mathematically. Answer: 5 x 10=50 - How about six trays? 6 x 10=60 - How about seven trays? 7 x 10=70 Ask them what is special about multiplying by ten? Answer to look for: When multiplying any number by ten, just add zero to the original number. Practice Questions: 8 x _ = 8 (1)
10 x _ = 0 (0)
3 x _ = 30 (10)
Tricky (Connections to Decimal Unit):
You have seven dimes. Your friend has ten nickels. Who more money? Show me your work. (7 x 0.10 = 0.70, 10 x 0.05 = 0.50 you have more money) If there is time, ask what would happen if we multiply by 100? 1000? 10 000? See what happens.
