BE-306 Management Reflective Statement

During the final quarter of 2016, I completed the Management course at the
International College of the Cayman Islands. Our instructor, Ms. Melisa Bent-Hamilton,
informed us that there were six learning outcomes for our course. The learning outcome I chose
to highlight in my e-Portfolio was the one stating that we should understand the importance of
management, management concepts, and theories to current events by the end of our course.
Throughout the duration of our Management course, we learned what management is,
significant theories in management, as well as the different types of managers and leaders. On a
weekly basis, each student was required to complete an assignment and discuss it with the class.
The topics of these discussions ranged from self-introductions to social responsibility and
emotional intelligence. One of the discussions I found most engaging was on the topic of
contingency and crisis planning.
In the fourth week of our course, we were required to research a company that has had
to handle a crisis situation. For this discussion, I chose to research Toyota in reference to their
recall crisis. Upon researching the situation, I found out what the initial crisis was, as well as
how Toyota responded to the situation, and the effect the crisis and their response had on the
company. This assignment allowed me to understand the importance of management,
management concepts, and theories to current events as they applied to Toyota. It was very
interesting to see the impact poor or effective management can have on the survival of a
company.
