BIAppsImplementationPlanning:
OracleBusinessIntelligenceApplications(BIApps)requiresfunctionalsetup/configurationandcustomizationtomatchthesource
implementation.Itisnotsimplyaninstallationofthe"OutofTheBox(OOTB)contentthatisshippedwiththeproduct.Outofthe
BoxBIAppscontentisintendedtodemodataloadfromasimplesamplesourcesuchasEBSVisiondataforanyothersource
system.Advancedresourcestrainedin:sourcesystems,BIApps,OBIEE,ODI/Informatica,ODIanddatabasearerequiredforthe
implementation.
OracleSupportiscommonlycontactedbyaDBAorSourcesystemdeveloperthatisassignedtoinstallandimplementBIApps
withouthavingtherequiredskillforanOBIAimplementation.Thishasledtosignificantimplementationdelays,whichcaninclude
projectfailure,soitisimportanttoemphasizethataBIAppsimplementationrequiresexpertresources.
The system is designed to be integrated by technically competent and trained systems integration partners, and to be run by
corporateITstaffforbothdaytodayoperationsandforneededextensionsandupgrades.Aseverycorporateinfrastructureand
businessisdifferent,thesystemdoesallowcustomizationandextensibilitytoeither:

BIApplicationsImplementer:
AnImplementerisresponsibleforperformingtheinitialsetupandconfigurationofBIAppsandAnalyticsofferingarea(s)thatare
being implemented (for example "HR Analytics", "Financial Analytics", etc). The implementer role may be performed by the
customerorbyanimplementationpartner.
AccurateandsuccessfulmovementofdatafromasourcedatabasetoBIApplicationsDataWarehouserequiresthatyouperform
functionalsetupoftheAnalyticsoffering.Anofferingisaproductthatyouhavepurchased(forexample"HRAnalytics","Financial
Analytics", etc). The functional setup of an offering, based either on business requirements or on transactional source system
settings or configurations, directs the manner in which relevant data is moved and transformed from a source to the target.
Additionally, some functional setup of controls the manner in which data is displayed. Functional setup is also referred to
asFunctionalConfiguration.
Note:TheBIApplicationsImplementeriscommonlydifferentthantheERPImplementer(i.e.the
ImplementerforEBS,PeopleSoft,JDE,Fusion,etc)thathasimplementedandconfiguredthesourcesystem.

in BIApps to accommodate those modifications. The ratio of out of the box to customized from approximately 8020 (normal
rangeforBIApps)to3070(highlycustomized).

HardwareSizing&validation:
Hardware and Software Supported Version validation use SRSP Guide to validate that each installed product is
supported.
You need to do BIApps hardware sizing which include Database, ETL, and BI Server configuration based on volume of
dataandnumberofusers.HereyoumayhavetopitchinwithBIArchitect.

ProductInstallation:
DatabaseInstallationDBASkills.
MiddleTierWeblogic,OBIEE,ODIInformatica,ConfigurationManager/DACHereyouhavetopitchinwithBIConsultant
withrightkindofskill.
ConfiguringthemodulesofBIAppssuchasFinance,HR.SCOMHereagainyouhavetopitchinwithBIConsultantwith
rightkindofskillandhandsonunderstandingofthesourcesystem.
CustomizingandfinalizingthebusinessrequirementsweneedtopitchinwithBIFunctionalConsultant.
ETLPerformanceOptimizationrequiredDBA,OSAdmin,NetworkAdminandBIConsultant.
At any case you will need a Source System Functional Consultant who shall be very useful in identifying the requirements like
COA,OrganizationHierarchies,lookupsincludingSITsandEITs.EITsandalsoFunctionalconsultantwillneedtodotestingof
reportsinEBSandBIApps.
Incaseofthisconsultantitisbettertohavecrossdomain(HR/Finance)together..youwoulddefinitelyhaveBIArchitectandas
wellyouneedaBILead/AdministratorwhodoesthemodellingofRPDandBISecurity.
Assuming pure technical resource can address business questions is a sure recipe for BI failed projects. The OOTB will not
produceP&L,Balancesheetcorrectlyandshallrequirecustomizationbasedonthesourceimplementationstructure.Thismeans
you still need to rely on Functional Expertise. We have requests raised during implementation stages when the we are asked
wherearemyspecifichierarchiesandtechnicalpersonsdoesnothaveclueofwhattheyare!

Implementationtimelines:
Implementation time significantly varied based on how many resources are allocated and their expertize/experience in
implementingBIAppsfortherespectivesourcesystem,howmanymodulesarebeingimplemented.
WithOBIA11gthereisasignificantarchitectureandtechnologychangesoresourcesexpertinBIApps7.9.6.xwillrequireextra
time as this should be considered Complex and the Level of customization on the source system will respectively add
configurationandcustomizationvalidationtimeonBIApps.

BIAppsproductsupportsmultiplesourceapplicationswithdifferentsubjectareasandhenceitsverydifficulttocomeupwitha
defined implementation timeline another challenge is the actual implementation by customer, it varies a lot based on how a
customerusesthesourceapplication.Duetoallthesechallengescustomershouldwellplantheimplementation:
1.Start with Functional Consultant for gathering requirements, understanding the source system customizations, and

basedonvolumeofdataandnumberofusers.
3.Finalizethereportingrequirement.
4.StartsettingupOBIAinfrastructureandOOTBconfiguration.
5.RuntheETLprocess(Fullandincremental).
6.Validatethedatatounderstandifthereareanydatagaps.
7.Validatetheauthenticationmechanism,accesscontrolmechanism.
8.Customizetobringinadditionalcolumns/KPIbasedonGAPanalysis.
9.TunetheETLandReportperformancebasedonproductiondatavolumes.
10.DEVtoUATMigrationprocessandtesting.
11.Planforpatchingandupgradeprocess.
Oracle Support for OBIA assists with issues arising out of OOTB (Out Of The Box) content delivered with the product. Any
customizationdonetotheOOTBcodeshouldbedonebyexpertresources.
MostoftheimplementationsshouldgothroughDEV/QA/UAT/PRODcycleandinthesameorderthestabilityoftheenvironments
improvesasitgetsmorerestricted/controlledandbetterhardwareresultingislesserchanceofanyunwantedactivitiesaffecting
theenvironment.
Successful implementation of BIApps requires one to have a understanding of the BI Application product, Source Application,
DBA/SQLskills,ODI/Informatica&OBIEEdesignskills.
FollowingaresomecommonexamplestakenfromSRstoclarifywhysourcespecificconfigurationandcustomizationarerequired
in BIApps before Initial Data Load as sometime the expectation are that BIApps data load will work outofbox which is not
possible because every source implementation/configuration/customization varies hence the requirement for BIApps
configuration and customization is a mandatory step if these configuration are not performed completely and correctly

Considerations:
i)Reports/dashboardsshouldnotbeusedoutofthebox,theyaremeantfordemonstrationanddatavalidationpurposesonly.
