#2 Explore the standards for quality early childhood education.

NAEYC has 10 main standards for quality early childhood education
programs. Standard 1 is Relationships NAEYC promotes positive relationships among all
children and adults. It encourages each childs sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a
community

and

fosters

each

childs

ability

to

contribute as a member of democracy. Standard 2 is Curriculum, the curriculum should be consistent with
its goals for children and promote learning and development in each of the following areas: social,
emotional, physical, language, and cognitive. Standard 3 Teaching says that teachers need to use
developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and effective teaching approaches that enhance
each childs learning and development. Standard 4 Assessment of child progress says that a high-quality
program stays informed about their children by ongoing systematic, formal, and informal assessment
approaches to provide information on childrens learning and development. Standard 5 Health says the
program promotes the nutrition and health of children and protects children and staff from illness and
injury. Children grow and learn best when they are happy and healthy. Standard 6 Teachers says that your
program should employ and support a teaching staff with the educational qualifications, knowledge, and
professional commitment necessary to promote childrens learning and development and to support
families diverse needs and interests. Teachers who are trained in child development and early childhood
education are more likely to provide positive interactions, richer language experiences, and quality
learning environments. Standard 7 Families states that we as educators need to establish and maintain
collaborative relationships with each childs family to foster childrens development in all settings. It is
better for the development of the child when all the adults in their lives are consistent and get along.
Communication is key. Standard 8 is about the importance of community relationships. Quality programs
establish relationships with and use the resources of the childrens communities to support the
achievement of program goals. Relationships with agencies and institutions in the community can help a
program achieve its goals and connect families with resources that support childrens healthy
development and learning. Standard 9 says a safe and healthful environment that provides appropriate
and well-maintained indoor and outdoor physical environments is important. Children need well
maintained and developmentally appropriate toys and equipment. NAEYCs 10 th standard states that
Leadership and Management effectively implement policies, procedures, and systems that support stable
staff and strong personnel. Effective management and operations, knowledgeable leaders, and sensible
policies and procedures are essential to building a quality program and maintaining the quality over time.
Licensing standards are standards and rules put into place to guarantee that child care facilities meet

protect children from harm, not only

threats to their immediate physical health and safety but also threats of longterm
developmental impairment. Rules that guideline sanitation and handwashing are
health and safety standards. The main purpose is to

necessary to prevent the excessive spread of germs and sickness. There are
licensing rules that regulate environments with the hope of providing children with
safe healthy places to grow and learn. We follow guidelines on paperwork, outside
time and temperature, care process, and much more. There are reasons for all the
licensing guidelines we follow and it all boils down to one main thing, what is in the
best interest of the children in care. The help us have standards that keep programs
providing quality experiences to children.
