For the handling of all substances the current MSDS (material safety data sheets) have to be consulted. It is
strongly recommended to use suitable protecting gloves and safety glasses.
2. Principle
Concentrated thioglycolic acid reacts with itself already at room temperature to internal esters, socalled thioglycolides. These compounds are not analyzed by iodometric titration without previous hydrolysis. Therefore these
esters are hydrolyzed by addition of alkalies and heating for some time.
The analysis is done by an automatic titrator whereby the acid to be analyzed is weighed in, diluted with water
and titrated against an iodine/iodide standard solution.
Reaction equations:
Hydrolysis
HOOC CH2 S CO CH2 SH + H2O 2 HOOC CH2 SH
(OH-)
Titration
2 HOOC CH2 SH + I2

Titrator i.e.. SCHOTT TitroLine alpha
Redox electrode SCHOTT or similar

5. Method
Appr.. 150 200 mg TGA are weighed in accurately in the beaker and diluted with demineralized water to appr.
50 ml. 5 ml of ammonia solution 25% is added and the mixture is heated on the water bath with stirring for 5 min.
After this procedure the mixture is cooled down to room temperature with an ice bath. The chilled solution is acidi-

fied with 10 ml concentrated acetic acid and then titrated with 0.1 n iodine solution. (For visual end point detection
appr. 2 ml of 2% starch solution are added before starting the titration).
6. Calculation
The assay of TGA is calculated with the equation
% TGA = V x 92.12 x 0.1 x f x 100 / M
V
92.12
0.1
f

To calculate the content of thioglycolides first is to perform a titration without hydrolysis (AA_08_14_0102). The
difference between the two methodes of determination is the content of internal esters (thioglycolides).
7. Environmental hints
The waste disposal has to be performed according to the applicable regulations.
