5S is the building block of improvement activity. The poster encompasses the major
themes of 5S into one image and has included the best translation from the original text
of Five S Lean Manufacturing. 5S are five terms beginning with "S" utilized to create a
workplace suited for visual control and lean production. The five terms are:
1. Sort means to separate needed tools, parts, and instructions from
unneeded materials and to remove the latter.
2. Straighten means to neatly arrange and identify parts and tools for ease of
use.
3. Sweep means to conduct a cleanup campaign.
4. Standardize means to conduct Sort, Straighten, and Sweep at frequent,
indeed daily, intervals to maintain a workplace in perfect condition.
5. Sustain means to form the habit of always following the first four Ss.
Use this poster with every workshop that you perform as 5S
should be an integral part of every workplace. This 5S poster will
improve your effectiveness as a facilitator and serve as a beacon to
sustaining Lean Manufacturing. Either as part of a kick-off to
your Lean transformation, or as an integral part of your day-to-day
