Circular No. NR 02/ 2008

Dear Sir / Madam,

TRAINING PROGRAMME ON

WASTE MANAGEMENT THROUGH 5S, 3M & K AIZEN

Friday, 1st February 2008: Venue - CII - Chandigarh
0900hrs 1730 hrs

Waste elimination concepts have been adopted by many organizations globally, as a way of
providing better value to the customers by reducing costs, improving quality,
responsiveness and fle xibility, and thus resulting in improved profitability.
5S, 3M & Kaizen are the most popular methods adopted by organizations globally for
effective Waste Management.

Concept of 5S
5S is a reference to a list of five Japanese words which 'start' with S. This list is a mnemonic
for a methodology that is often incorrectly characterized as "standardized cleanup",
however it is much more than cleanup. 5S is a philosophy and a way of organizing and
managing the workspace and work flow with the intent to improve efficiency by eliminating
waste.
The key targets of 5S are workplace morale and efficiency. The assertion of 5S is, by
assigning everything a location, time is not wasted by looking for things. Additionally, it is
quickly obvious when something is missing from its designated location. 5S advocates

believe the benefits of this methodology come from deciding what should be kept, where it
should be kept, and how it should be stored. This decision making process should lead to
a dialog which can build a clear understanding, between employees, of how work should be
done. It also instills ownership of the process in each employee. The order of items or
activities should be in a manner to promote work flow. For example, tools should be kept at
the point of use, workers should not have to repetitively bend to access materials, flow
paths can be altered to improve efficiency, etc.
The 5S's are Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke
5S in a business context
The 5S methodology has been adopted into a variety of organizations from small business
to Fortune 500 companies. All implement the 5S's for improving productivity and
performance of employees.

CONCEPT OF 3M Muda, Muri & Mura

Muda is a Japanese term for activity that is waste and doesn't add value. Mura means
inconsistency in the system which has to be addressed for effective working at shopfloor.
Muri means strain which should be kept minimum for increasing employee efficiency.
These are also key concepts in the Toyota Production System
A process adds value by producing goods or providing a service that a customer will pay
for. A process consumes resources and waste occurs when more resources are consumed
than are necessary to produce the goods or provide the service that the customer actually
wants. Waste reduction is an effective way to increase profitability.

Concept of Kaizen
Kaizen means "improvement". Kaizen strategy calls for never-ending efforts for
improvement involving everyone in the organization managers and workers alike. The
Kaizen method of continuous incremental improvements is an originally Japanese
management concept for incremental (gradual, continuous) change (improvement). Kaizen

is actually a way of life philosophy, assuming that every aspect of our life deserves to be
constantly improved.

CII-L M Thapar Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs
The Confederation of Indian Industry has been continuously charting a road map for Indian industry to reach the
ultimate destination i.e. world class. To help the indust ry improve its competitiveness, CII has set up a Centre of
Excellence at Chandigarh. CII - L M Thapar-Centre for Competitiveness is a unique concept and home for the
industry for their needs related to enhancement of competitiveness. SMEs in particular, can look up to the centre to
handhold them to a new level of excellence.
The Centre has adopted a unique diagnostic methodology to assess your needs related to manufacturing and
business. The diagnosis is done after a thorough analysis of the collected relevant data by in-house experts in the
Centre.
The working, apart from analysis of the hardcore figures and manufacturing processes also focusses on one of the
most important elements of competitiveness i.e. People. Need of soft skills development, whether they be on
Productivity enhancements, Leadership qualities, Customer satisfactions etc constitute a major focus of the overall
approach.
The threadbare analysis leads to identification of various needs in the fields such as Quality, Cost, Energy, HR etc.
Based on this assessment a basket of services is made available to the companies. The basket carries optimum
weightage of required services in the form of a package.
Services Offered
The delivery is through a coordinated and participative approach. The Centre works closely with the organisation to
take you to new heights of competitiveness. The centre offers the following services under its umbrella:
