A Message from the Tutor

Thank for you buying this e-tutorial. The tutorial comprises of ten
tutorial lessons, and two review tutorial lessons all with
comprehensive solutions
One of my principal aims is to create a quality product. A great deal
of time went into viewing the suitability of questions, relating
examples to questions and sequencing questions in order of
difficulty. I gave a great deal of attention to the solutions, making
them as comprehensive as possible so that they can easily be
followed.
All the lessons have been tested in the classroom and have worked
well. I have found that with standard textbooks, quite often the
exercise questions do not relate to the given examples. Also difficult
questions seem to appear randomly, sometimes near the beginning
of the exercise, rather than at the end. Standard textbooks only give
brief answers and not fully worked solutions.

Lesson 01
Ratio

Solutions

Model cars are often made in the ratio of 1:18.

This means that a measurement of 1cm on the model is equal to
18cm on the actual car.

1. Total number of parts = 2 + 3 = 5

Length of longest part =

Examples
1. A piece of wood is 15cm and is divided in the ratio 2:3. What is
the length of the longest part?

2. Total number of parts = 5 + 4 + 3 = 12

Largest part =

2. $240 is divided in the ratio 5:4:3. What is the difference between

the largest and smallest parts?
Smallest part
3. A model boat is built in the ratio 1:30. Its width is 15cm. What is
the actual width of the real boat in metres?
4. A ribbon is divided into two parts, in the ratio of 3:5. If the
shortest part is 12cm, what is the length of the longest part?

3
x 15 = 9cm
5

5
x 240 = 100
12
3
x 240 = 60
12

Difference = 100 - 60 = $40

3. Width of real boat = 15 x 30 = 450cm
= 450 100 = 45m
4. 3 parts = 12cm, so 1 part =

12
= 4 cm.
3

The longest part = 5 x 4 = 20 cm

with cottage cheese in the ratio 3:2. If 240g of cottage cheese is
used, what is the weight of blueberry yoghurt in the protein
mixture?

2. 350 kg is divided in the ratio of 2:5. How much is the largest

largest piece is 104g, what is the weight of the smallest piece?

Lesson 02
Map Scales

Example

A map scale of 1:1000 means that 1cm on the map represents

1000cm on the ground.

1. A map is drawn on the scale of 1:250 000

If the length of a house on the map is 2cm, what is its actual length in
metres?

a. The length of a road on the map is 7cm. What is its actual

length in km?

1cm:1000cm

b. The length of a river is 125km. What is the length of the

river in cm, on the map?

= 1cm: 10 m
2cm on the map represents 2 x 10 = 20m.

1cm:250 000cm

So the actual length of the house is 20m

= 1cm: 2 500m

If the actual length of a bridge is 35m, what would be its length on

the map?

= 1cm: 25km

1cm:10m

a. Road

7 x 25 = 175km

35
= 35 cm on the map
10

b. River

12 5
= 5cm

2. It takes 4 women 10 hours to clean a suite of offices. How many

women would be needed to clean in 8 hours?

To build a fence, it can take 2 men 5 days. How long will it take one
man?

Solution
1 woman takes 4 x 10 = 40 hours

It will take longer, 5 x 2 = 10 days.

x women would take
The number of men needed and the time taken are inversely
proportional.
If we increase the number of men to 4, how long will it take to build
