(i) State Bohrs quantization condition for defining stationary orbits. How does
de Broglie hypothesis explain the stationary orbits ?
Find the relation between the three wavelengths 1 , 2 and 3 from the
energy level diagram shown below.

Draw a plot showing the variation of de Broglie wavelength of electron as a

function of its K. E.
(i) Using Bohrs postulates, obtain the expression for the radius of the nth
orbit in hydrogen atom.
(ii) Write two important limitations of Rutherford model which could not
explain the observed features of atomic spectra. How were these explained in
Bohrs model of hydrogen atom ? Use the Rydberg formula to calculate the
wavelength of the H line. ( Rh = 1.097 x 107 m-1 )
(a) Draw a schematic arrangement of Geiger-Marsden experiment showing
the scattering of -particles by a thin foil of gold. Why is it that most of the particles go right through the foil and only a small fraction gets scattered at
large angles ?
Draw the trajectory of the -particle in the coulomb field of a nucleus. What
is the significance of impact parameter and what information can be obtained
regarding the size of the nucleus ?
(b) Estimate the distance of closest approach to the nucleus (Z = 80) if a 7.7
MeV -particle before it comes momentarily to rest and reverses its direction.

7. If innermost orbit of H-atom has radius R , then what is the ratio of radii of

3rd to 5th orbit ?

8. The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is 13.6 eV. What are the kinetic
and potential energies of the electron in this state?
9. A hydrogen atom initially in the ground level absorbs a photon, which excites
it to the n = 4 level. Determine the wavelength and frequency of the photon.

10. A photon emmited by sun should have infinite wavelength as it is massless

but in reality it is not true . Why ?

MATHEMATICS SECTION ( 20 Marks )

1. Three persons A, B and C apply for a job of Manager in a Private Company.
Chances of their selection (A, B and C) are in the ratio 1 : 2 :4. The
probabilities that A, B and C can introduce changes to improve profits of the
company are 0.8, 0.5 and 0.3, respectively. If the change does not take place,
find the probability that it is due to the appointment of C.
2. An urn contains 3 white and 6 red balls. Four balls are drawn one by one with
replacement from the urn. Find the probability distribution of the number of
red balls drawn. Also find mean and variance of the distribution.
3. Four cards are drawn successively with replacement from a well shuffled deck
of 52 cards. What is the probability that (i) all the four cards are spades ? (ii)
only 2 cards are spades ?
4. A pair of dice is thrown 4 times. If getting a doublet is considered a success,
find the probability distribution of number of successes. Hence find the mean
of the distribution.
5. Assume that each born child is equally likely to be a boy or a girl. If a family
has two children, what is the conditional probability that both are girls given
that (i) the youngest is a girl, (ii) at least one is a girl?
