ABSTRACT
Beamish R. J., M. Smith, and R. Scarsbrook. 1978. Hake and pollock study,
Strait of Georgia cruise, G.B. REED January 6-February 21, 1975.
Fish. Mar. Serv. Data Rep. 48: 206 p.
A total of 63 midwater tows were completed during the cruise. Most
tows were made in the deeper basins of the Strait of Georgia, however, some
sets were completed in Swanson Channel, Saanich Inlet, and Jervis Inlet.
Pacific hake was the most common of the 30 species captured. Pollock was not
abundant and there was no indication that stocks could sustain a commercial
fishery.
Pollock in the open strait were small, ranging in size from 34-50 cm.
Only in Swanson Channel were larger pollock (up to 64 cm) found. Young-of-theyear pollock were not found in the open strait. Pollock could be aged by
pectoral fin sections although it was difficult to separate annuli after age 3.
The modes determined from length-frequency histograms were similar to modes
estimated from means, determined from the various year-classes. High rates of
annual natural.mortality (A = 0.85) were estimated for the stock of mature
pollock in the open strait. This high rate of natural annual mortality of
mature fish was consistent with other biological observations.
Mature Pacific hake ranged in length from 40-50 cm. All year-classes
were found in the strait. It appeared that a separate stock of hake may
exist in Saanich Inlet. Older hake could not be accurately aged using surface
readings from otoliths. Because annuli were not distinct but otoliths increased
in thickness it was necessary to prepare sections of otoliths. It was found
that after a section age of 5 yr the section ages were consistently older than
the surface ages. The use of section ages provided a lower annual natural
mortality estimate of A = .46 than the estimate of A = .59 determined using
age determinations from the otolith surface.
Large catches of juvenile dogfish were obtained particularly
towards the northern end of the strait.

Stomach contents of a small sample of hake, pollock, and dogfish

were examined.
Key words: Strait of Georgia, Pacific hake, walleye pollock,
juvenile spiny dogfish, data record.

INTRODUCTION

The January -February 1975 G.B. REED cruise was a cooperative attempt
to study the biology, biomass, and distribution of Pacific hake and walleye
pollock in the Strait of Georgia. Earlier studies by Mr. S. J. Westrheim,
Pacific Biological Station, Nanaimo, B. C., suggested that stocks of pollock
in the Strait of Georgia might support a commercial fishery, hence it was
of particular importance to locate concentrations of off-bottom fishes and
determine if, in fact, pollock were sufficiently abundant to support a
commercial fishery.
This report summarizes the catch composition and the
results of biological studies.
A summary of the acoustic biomass and distribution. studies has been published separately (Taylor and Barner 1976a; 1976b).
This is the sixth report describing the results of the biological
studies associated with the Strait of Georgia hake and pollock study. These
reports are prepared to provide a complete description and analyses of each
cruise.
Upon completion of the project, the results from all studies will be
summarized and these reports referred to when original data cannot be quoted.
These data records of the hake and pollock studies in the Strait of Georgia
are not published in sequence.

METHODS

An Engel 434 midwater trawl equipped with an Elac model LAZ17 headrope transducer and a 2-cm stretched mesh codend liner were used for all tows.
Fishing sites were selected such that tows were distributed throughout the
Strait in areas in which echograms indicated moderate-to-large catches of fish
might be expected. Tows were also made to identify the species composition of
targets identified as part of the acoustic biomass survey. At many stations
a series of horizontal tows were made to examine the species composition of the
various layers.
A bathythermograpli was used at each station to record temperature to a depth of 280 m.
Hake and pollock were measured for fork length and stratified
random or random samples were sampled for sex, maturity, stomach contents, and
age.
Age was determined from hake using otoliths and from pollock using
sections of pectoral fins. Hake otoliths were examined under reflected light
using a binocular microscope. Samples of hake otoliths were also sectioned
and examined using a compound microscope. Hake otoliths were sectioned by
removing one of a pair of otoliths from a 50% glycerin solution and rinsing in
toluene prior to mounting in clear epoxy. (Hysol brand epoxy patch kit proved
to be a satisfactory type of epoxy.) Two, approximately 500-11 thick dorsal
ventral cross sections were taken from the nucleus of the otolith using a
Bromwill Model TSM thin-sectioning machine. This machine employs diamond
impregnated grinding discs and will semiautomatically section otoliths with
little difficulty.
The epoxy served to prevent fragmenting of the thin sections
and retained the sections until they were broken off and mounted on a glass slide
with clear liquid mounting medium (Flo-tex).

- 2 When time permitted other species were examined for length and
possibly sex, maturity, and stomach contents.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

GENERAL CRUISE SUMMARY

A total of 63 midwater tows were completed during the cruise. Most
tows were made in the deeper basins in the Strait, however, some sets were
also completed in Swanson Channel, Saanich Inlet, and Jervis Inlet (Fig. 1).
At least 30 species of fishes were captured (Table 1). Pacific hake was the
Pollock, dogfish, and Leuroglossus were common in
most common species caught.
the catches but were much less abundant than hake (Table 2). Leuroglossus
was common in catches below the scattering layer and probably abundant.
Because of its small size most Leuroglossus would not be retained in the net.
Herring were found in large numbers only in Swanson Channel. Saanich Inlet
contained large quantities of hake and splitnote rockfish that appeared to be
resident to that area.

Echograms frequently showed that concentrated scattering occurred

at a depth of approximately 100-170 m. Approximately one third of all the 'tows
were made in or above this layer. As mentioned, Leuroglossus were most abundant below this layer (Fig. 2, 3; Table 3) howover, some larger catches were
recorded when the scattering layer was relatively deep and the net fished in
the layer (e.g. set 50). In the central and northern strait larger catches of
hake were obtained below the scattering layer (Fig. 4, 5). Average catches in
the vicinity of Texada Island were higher above than below the scattering
layer. However, the average catches above the scattering layer in this area
were influenced by one large catch in Malaspina Strait and tw large catches
in Sabine Channel and no catches were made below the scattering layer in
Sabine Channel.
Pollock catches averaged 77 kg/hr in and above the scattering layer
and 46 kg/hr below. Pollock tended to be concentrated above the scattering
layer (Fig. 6, 7).
Dogfish catches also averaged higher above or in the scattering
layer 157 kg/hr than below 87 kg/hr, the scattering layer. Dogfish were more
abundant in the northern areas than the southern areas. However, if set 24
which consisted of a large number of juvenile dogfish is excluded, then the
average catch above (76 kg/hr), the scattering layer is slightly less than
below the layer (Fig. 8, 9).
The use of the scattering layer to separate catches is meaningful
only when major differences in abundance are apparent. The layer, which appears
to be a plankton layer, is not always distinct and separation of catches into
the two categories sometimes is uncertain. Net depths vary and the position
of sets and depths of set are not random, hence results may be biased. However,
despite these imprecisions it has been observed that this layer is a useful
reference about which to describe the annual vertical distribution of the major
midweter fishes in the Strait of Georgia.

OTHER SPECIES SAMPLED

In addition to hake, pollock, and dogfish samples were obtained from
brown cat shark, chinook salmon, herring, and 14 other species (Table 4).
Length frequencies have been included for brown cat sharks (Table 5), two
species of myctophids (Table 6) and the padded sculpin (Malacocottus kincaidi)
(Table 7).

Pacific hake

Maturing female hake were observed as small as 33 cm, however, 50 7

had started to mature at a length of 39 cm. Seventy-two percent of mature
females were in a stage of early ovarian development (R1). Females displayed
a range in maturity states with 19 7 in the early ripe stage "R. 2 ), and 9% not
developing or resting. The smallest male that was maturing in preparation for
spawning in 1975 measured 31 cm. Fifty percent of the males were mature or
were maturing for the first time at a length of 39 cm. Males were slightly
more mature than females with 52% being at a stage of early development (RI),
45% being ripe or almost ripe, and 2% showing in spawning condition (RR). The
predominantly early development stages of male and female gonads clearly
indicated that the population was not in spawning condition but may have been
beginning a prespawning migration or concentration.
Most mature fish ranged in length from 40-50 cm (Table 8 and 9). Youngof-the-year hake with a modal length of 10 cm (Table 9) would be retained
only by the liner and consequently catches would not be large. Young-of-theyear hake were found in approximately one third of the catches
throughout the Strait of Georgia at depths ranging from just above the scattering layer to the bottom. Age 2, (modal length of 25 cm) and age 3 (Modal length
- 32 cm) hake were also found throughout the Strait mostly in the deeper tows
below the scattering layer. Comparison of the size composition of hake from
each set did not show any obvious spatial separation of mature adults from
immatures (Table 9). The length frequency of mature hake was similar for
most tows except for one tow in Sannich Inlet and one off Gabriola Island in
which unusually large hake in the range 50-60 cm were captured.

Hake were observed to feed on a variety of organisms including both

vertebrate and invertebrates (Table 10). Most stomachs contained small amounts
of euphausiids and glass shrimp. Herring were found in only a few of the
larger hake mostly from Saanich Inlet. In general hake did not appear to be
actively feeding during the period of the cruise.
Hake of ages 1 and 2 yr were readily identifiable from the length
frequency of fish caught during the cruise (Table 10). Age 3 hake could also
be identified, but the mode was less obvious. Hake older than age 3 were not
distinguishable from a length-frequency plot. The modal size of all adults
was 44 cm. Adult male modal length was 44 cm and female was 45 cm. Hake of
this size predominated in most catches.

The ages assigned to young hake by identifying annuli from the

surface of the otolith viewed under reflected light were satisfactory.
Agreement for older hake between two readers and between the two methods was
tested using the Wilcoxin signed rank test and all were found to be
significantly different (P < 0.01). However, in set 31 there was 67%
agreement and 94% agreement within + 1 yr.
In set 37 there was 57% agreement and 93% agreement within + 1 yr
for surface readings between the two readers. Surface and section determinations
were compared for Reader No. 2 in tow 37 and 47% were identical and 79% agreed
within + 1 yr. The approximate 60-70% agreement and the 95% agreement within
+_ 1 yr for the two surface determinations indicates that the independent age
determinations were similar or better than many comparative age determinations.
The percent agreement between surface and section readings was not as good
but was-still high because of the lower percentage of older fish in the sample.
However, many otoliths did not display distinct annuli on the periphery. Often
the outer edge consisted of a wide translucent band with some indistinct opaque
Many of these otoliths appeared to be much thicker than fish that were
lines.
of similar length but could be aged as young fish with a high degree of
certainty.
It was suspected that these thicker otoliths with the non-distinct
annuli after about age 5 yr were older than indicated by the surface readings.
Thin sections of otoliths were examined to determine if otoliths from older
fish were not being aged correctly. Photographs of these sections will not be
included in this report but will be included in a subsequent publication.
The sections of otoliths indicated that many more opaque and
translucent zones were apparent than could be distinguished from the surface.
However, it was difficult on all otoliths to identify these zones as annuli.
In some of the better sections it was possible to show that the otolith section
age was similar to the age determined from the surface for young fish. Also
the morphology of the otolith and otolith section changed as more annuli
became evident.
The thicker otoliths definitely displayed more annuli on the
periphery in sections that could not be identified from surface readings.
Therefore there was little doubt that ages of older hake were being underestimated by surface readings.
A comparison of otolith section ages with otolith surface ages was
made by determining the mean surface age for each section age, subtracting the
section age from the surface age and plotting the mean section age deviation
from the surface age (Fig. 10). Up to age 5 by the section ages the two
ageing methods gave similar results.
After a section age of 5 yr the section
ages were consistently older than surface ages.
The determination of annuli from otolith sections is difficult for
hake from the Strait of Georgia, but the sectioning method does enable zones
to be distinguished that are not identifiable from the surface using reflected
light.
At present there is still doubt concerning the accuracy of ages of
Strait of Georgia hake obtained from sections but there is no doubt that more
older hake are predent in the population than was indicated by the age
determinations using surface readings.

When the maximum dorsal ventral thickness was plotted against age
determined from surface readings and section readings (Fig. 11, 12, 13) it
was apparent from the slopes of the equations that the thicker otoliths tended
to produce older ages by the section method. A straight line has been plotted
to all points and is significantly linear. However, the age-thickness graph is
essentially a growth curve for the otolith and probably would be better
described by a Von Bertalauffy equation. A comparison of the two surface
readings shows that the slope of the line relating age and otolith thickness
for Reader No. 1 is steeper than for Reader No. 2 indicating more older fish
were identified by Reader No. 2. However, Reader No. 2 did not read the
complete sample and the preceding statement may not be completely correct
without additional statistical test to confirm that the sample aged by No. 2
was a representative subsample.
Ages determined by two readers and by the two methods have been
summarized in Table 11, 12 and 13. The results of these determinations have
also been summarized in Fig. 14 through 25.
There was no apparent difference in the shape of the growth curves
for sets 31 and 37 for any of the ageing methods. Growth continued until age
4 and a mean length of approximately 42 cm then was reduced. Section ages
indicated that more older fish were present in the population and that these
older fish did not increase in length after age II) and after age 6 the curve
was almost flat indicating no mean increase in length occurred (Fig. 15b).
There was a mihor difference in the mean size of males and females with mature
males averaging 1-2 cm smaller than mature females.
The growth curve from set 46 is not typical of hake growth curves
from the Strait of Georgia. Hake from this set were captured in Saanich
Inlet and contained more larger fish than characteristically found in the
open strait. It is also suspected that this area may support a separate stock.
The ages of hake from the selected sample of large hake have also been included
in this curve resulting in an exaggeration of the amount of growth after age
4 or 5. If these larger fish were excluded then the curve would be similar to
other curves. It appears that hake sampled in this set may have different
rates of growth. Most hake in this set grow in a manner that is typical for
most Strait of Georgia hake but a few individuals grow to larger sizes. This
additional growth not only has resulted in larger sizes but appears to have
facilitated the interpretation of annuli for older fish. The observation
that these larger fish are also older fish may be additional evidence that
the ages assigned to slower-growing individuals may be low if the surface
readings are used. There is also a possibility that the larger fish were
migrants from some other area.
Offshore hke - reach . similar sizes and some
hake found in the Yellow Point area also are very large.

Age-length histograms (Fig. 18-23) indicate that ages 1 and 2 can

be readily identified and age 3 is in some cases difficult to separate from
older fish in a length-frequency histogram because of reduced amount of
growth in length and the dominance in sample size of hake older than age 3.
In set 31 Reader No. 2 identified a few more older fish (Fig 18, 19). In
set 37, Reader No. 1 surface ages did not separate age 2 and 3 individuals as
well as Reader No. 2 and section ages. The age-length frequency for set 46
(Fig. 23) clearly shows the influence of the increased growth rate in a few
larger hake, almost all of which are females.

-6 -

Hake from set 31 were selected from a stratified random sample and
have not been used to estimate natural mortality. In set 37, the surface age
determinations of Reader No. 1 produced estimates of annual natural mortality
(Jackson 1939) for ages 5-8 for males of A = .60, females A = .51, and male
plus female of A = .59 (Fig. 24a). Reader No. 2 did not age a sufficiently
larger sample (Fig. 24b) to allow a separate mortality estimate for males and
females, however, the total estimate of A = .66 was similar to the total
annual mortality estimated from Reader No. 1. The estimates of annual natural
mortality for males, females, and totals for section ages from set 37 (Fig.
24c) for ages 4-8 were identical at A = .46. The lower mortality rate is a
result of more older fish being identified. The catch curve for fish older
than age 8 is erratic and appears to indicate a change in mortality rate. At
present there is no explanation for this unexpected change in the appearance
of the catch curve. Set 46 contained some large selected fish which have
been removed from the catch curve in Fig. 25. The estimate of A was .39.
As mentioned, these fish were captured in Saanich Inlet and possibly were a
stock separate from the bulk of hake found in the open strait. This particular
catch curve differs from most Strait of Georgia catch curves for hake by
reaching a maximum at age 6 rather than age 4 or 5, the reduced slope, and the
larger number of older fish. It is possible that if this is a separate stock
it is composed of older fish with a lower rate of annual natural mortality.
Pollock

Pollock were not abundant but were present in 59 of 63 midwater tows,

accounting for 6% of the total catch by weight or 7% of the total hake, pollock,
and dogfish catch. Pollock catches were large only in four areas; north
of Sabine Channel, Jervis Inlet, south of Texada, and Swanson Channel. These
catches were obtained above or just below the scattering layer. Of the 1894
pollock measured for length (Tables 14, 15), 804 were males, 481 were females
and 609 were not sexed. Pollock ranged in length from 10-64 cm (Table 16) but
most pollock captured in the open strait ranged in length from 34-50 cm.
Catches in Swanson Channel contained the greatest range in sizes.
With the exception of sets 41 and 26, no young-of-the-year pollock
were found in the open strait and these two sets contained only a few youngof-the-year fish. Hauls in Swanson Channel produced the only significant
catches of juveniles (age 1 and 2 or up to approximately 30 cm) (Table 16).
A few age 2 fish were found just off Active Pass and east of Halibut Bank,
Five hundred and ninety-six pollock were examined for stomach
contents (Table 16). Only 1% (7 fish) of the stomachs were everted and 28%
(169 fish) were empty. The average volume was 1.3 cc including empty stomachs.
Fifty-six percent of the pollock examined contained euphausiids and 6% (37 fish)
contained shrimp. Fish remains, including hake, herring, northern smooth
tongues, myctophids, and sandlance-were found in 6% (34 fish) of those
examined.
Pollock were aged using sections of pectoral fins. Scales and
surface observations of otoliths did not provide satisfactory separation of

-7 -

annuli for age determination of pollock from the Strait of Georgia. The
annulus was considered to be the narrow translucent zone or light zone in
Fig. 26. The first and third annuli were most readily distinguishable from
the fin-ray sections (Fig. 26). Photographs of fin-ray sections in Fig. 26
are from the better sections and the problems of identifying the second
annulus are only apparent in Fig. 26H. Because growth during the first 3 yr
was sufficiently rapid, the position of the second annulus was consistently
located about the same distance from the centre of the ray. Because anterior
fin-rays exhibit more growth than posterior fin-rays, this distance varied
among rays. The position of the third annulus was usually well separated from
the second annulus and at a distance sufficiently remote from the centre of the
ray that it could not be confused with the second annulus. The ages assigned
for age-classes 1, 2, and all fish age 3 and older were similar to modes in
the length-frequency distribution of catches. Thus with material such as
Fig. 26E and H, the second annulus was identified in part by the presence of
a faint translucent zone and in part by the spacing of this faint zone from
the centre of the ray.
The fourth and subsequent annuli frequently formed in close
association with each other (Fig. 26D, E, F, G, H). The separation of the
third and fourth annuli was difficult in some sections (Fig. 26E) and ages
of some sections simply were in doubt. In general, the fourth annulus could
be separated from the third annulus by the presence of a narrow opaque (dark)
zone. The wider translucent area on the edge of the ray that was indicative
that more than one annulus might be present. In some cases the fourth annulus
was close to the third annulus but readily separable from the third annulus
(Fig. 26F) confirming that growth is greatly reduced after age 4. While
accuracy of all ages of pollock age 4 and older is in doubt, there was no
doubt that some pollock were older than age 3.
Pollock ages from sets 38, 44, and 45 are summarized in Tables 17,
18, 19 and in Fig. 27-31. The growth curves for sets 38, 44, and 45 (Fig. 27)
combined, show a pronounced difference in the size of males and females after
maturity at age 4. There was little increase in the mean length of males
while females increase in length. This pronounced increase in female mean
size resulted from the inclusion of the pollock found in the Swanson Channel
(Fig. 28). These pollock reach larger sizes than pollock normally found in
the open strait. When only pollock from tow 38 were considered, the continued
increase in size or the lack of real flattening in the growth curve of females
was apparent but less pronounced. In tow 38 (Fig. 29) and in the other two
tows sampled for age composition there were differences in the shape of the
growth curves produced from the ages of the two readers. At present it is
difficult to resolve the differences in the ages assigned to identical
material by the two readers and the results of both determinations are recorded.
The similarity in the length frequencies of age 3, 4, 5, 6 is shown in Fig. 28.
It is suspected that the higher number of older fish found by Reader no. 1
may be anomalous as these readings result in an annual rate of mortality
(Fig. 30, 31) that does not seem to agree with other biological information
found subsequent to this report. In these data the mean size of mature fish
in 1976 was several centimeters smaller than in 1975 indicating the abundant
larger fish in 1975 had either died or left the strait.

-8 -

Natural annual mortality rates (A) were calculated for the combined
data from tows 38, 44, and 45 using the Jackson 1939 formula to estimate the
slope of the right hand limits of the catch curve (Fig. 30, 31) for ages 4-6.
The results of Reader No. 2 produced a total annual natural mortality of 0.85
and 0.90 for males and 0.74 for females. The results of Reader no. 1 produced
a total annual natural mortality of 0.56 and 0.58 for males and 0.51 for
females. The rate of 0.85 is similar to the rate of 0.84 estimated in another
report (Beamish et al. 1976).
Dogfish
Dogfish were present in 61 of the 63 hauls and biological samples
were obtained from dogfish from many of these sets (Table 20). No dogfish
were captured in sets 44 and 45 from Swanson Channel. Largest numbers of
dogfish were found at the northern end of the Strait and these fish were
primarily juveniles, measuring less than 60 cm (Table 21). Dogfish smaller
than 60 cm represented 787e of the number of all dogfish sampled.
Significant numbers of young-of-the-year dogfish were caught in
sets 13 and 15. These fish had a modal length of 26 cm and ranged from 23 to
approximately 30 cm. The length frequency (Fig. 32) clearly demonstrates the
problem of identifying modal length groups. The samples selected for length
measurements were not randomly selected and the relative importance of the
number of juveniles in the catch to adults might be somewhat exaggerated in
Fig. 32. Despite the absence of a random sampling there was little doubt
that juveniles were abundant in the catches relative to mature older fish.
Male dogfish were found to be mature at a length range of 73-96 cm
and females showing some ovarian development ranged in length from 87-106 cm.
Females actually possessing uterine eggs ranged in length from 90-102 cm and
females with yolk sac pups ranged in length from 98-106 cm.
Juvenile dogfish fed on planktonic invertebrates (Table 22) and
small fishes. More than one-half of the juveniles examined had empty stomachs.
Dogfish larger than 60 cm fed on a variety of organisms but hake remains were
the dominant food item possibly because most dogfish were caught since the
fishing effort was directed towards hake.
A summary of vertical temperatures by set and set information is
included in Appendix 1 and 2 respectively.
