Questions 9 15 are based on the following passage. Choose the best answer to fill in each blank.

Sometimes, our memory fails us when we need it most: such as during our exams, or
when a face is familiar but not the name or where we last placed our car keys. Good memory
is not just one of our most important health assets 9 a tool to further our career and enhance
our self-development. As with any assets, we have to also look after our memory to ensure
that 10 does not become a liability in our old age. Our memory is to help us cope and
function with daily activities. Our memory function 11 divided into short-term memory and
long-term memory. Short-term memory is when we have acquired recent facts and the facts
are still intact. Examples are keeping appointments or if the electricity bill has been paid.
Long-term memory calls for recollection of key events that 12 in our childhood or distant
past.
As we grow older, our brain mass 13 and learning becomes more difficult especially
in picking up foreign languages or new skills. We tend to become 14 forgetful too with age.
However, if short-term memory becomes severely impaired, it could be due to Alzheimers
disease. Alzheimers sufferers are known to forget to get dressed after a shower, ask to be fed
just after a 15 meal or lose their direction back home after a shopping trip. Alzheimer
predominantly affects the elderly and the incidence is higher in women than in men simple
because women tend to live longer.

[Time suggested : 50 minutes]
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
1
I have always had this childhood dream that I would see the Taj Mahal by
moonlight. And that too before I was twenty-one. I never knew why but I
nursed this dream for a long time. Whenever I mentioned it to anyone in my
8

family, they would laugh. What chance did I have of doing that, they would
ask, considering our familys financial status? But fate has a strange way of
dispensing luck, and when I got my share of it, my dream came true.
Somehow I did go to Agra, India, just as I turned twenty.
2

There I stood totally mesmerized by the magnificent monument I

had come to see. I was charmed and held spellbound. Words seemed
inadequate to describe this beautiful gift of love, but the famous poet Tagore
came close when he said that empires may crumble to dust and centuries
may go by but the Taj will still stand in its fadeless form for all times, so
that people can remember a love that must have been really great indeed.
I sat down to drink in the beauty of what was in front of me. I
wondered what kind of man he was the man who dreamed up this
wondrous building. Yes, I knew that it was built by Shah Jahan, the Moghul
Emperor, in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Rising from the
banks of the river Yamuna, this monument is one of the greatest among the
other extraordinary buildings in India.
The rather witty tourist guide gave me quite a few facts about the Taj
Mahal. It took 20 000 workmen 22 years to build this marvel of a marble
tomb. Ustad Isa, a Persian architect, is said to have been the main designer of
the Taj.The entrance gate opens into a scene of reflecting pools, stone
pathways and specially selected varieties of flowering trees. The central
building houses the bodies of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan in a crypt
below.
There is perfect symmetry throughout the whole structure. Visual and
acoustic balance is maintained in the interior. Special architectural designs
cause recitations of the Quran to reverberate within the chamber. The interior
of the central building has precious stones embedded in the walls to form
pattern of flowers. There are verses from the Quran on the four main
doorways. The Arabic script enlarges as the eye moves up and away to read
the letters, thus creating an illusion of consistent size. As the guide told me
all these facts, I listened eagerly, devouring all the information. Everything
about the Taj fascinated me.

The guide added that Shah Jahan, despite his poetic soul and loving
heart, was also capable of cruelty. It is said that he had the fingers of the
artisans and the workmen cut off, so that no other Taj Mahal could ever be
built again. The poor craftsmen who were praised for their work paid a
heavy price for their part in creating this work of art.

40

I wondered a little about Mumtaz Mahal. She must have been a

captivating person. I sighed to think that I knew so little about her. Her name
means Ornament of the Palace, a title given by her husband. This beloved
wife of Shah Jahan died giving birth to their fourteenth child in 1631. Her
heartbroken husband ordered the construction of this monument in 1632.

45

Having heard enough, I decided to walk about the grounds. The night
9

was bathed in beauty. The white marble shimmered in the moonlight. I left
the guide and walked alone. I felt a selfish need to store this memory in my
mind. This was not something that could be photographed.
9

I wanted to enjoy the feeling of reverence this building evoked. In

fact, anyone entering the Taj has to take off his shoes, just as if one were
entering a mosque or a temple.

10

I also noticed that people tended to talk in hushed tones. No loud

jarring voices could be heard. There seemed to be a quiet understanding
among the people that this was a sacred place. The Taj has this effect on
people, I was told.
