Remove Front Idlers

start by:
a) separation of tracks

1. Remove bolts (2) and guard (1) from each side of the front idler.
2. Remove four bolts (3), spacers (6), shims and plates (5) from each side of the
front idler. Remove the two strips (4) from each side of the front idler.
NOTE: Put identification on the shims to prevent mixing at assembly.
3. Remove two bolts (8) from each side of the front idler.

4. Fasten a hoist to the front idler. Remove two bolts (7) from each side of the front
idler.
5. Move the front idler forward until the collars of the front idler are free from the
track roller frame.
6. Remove front idler (9). Weight of the front idler is 375 lb. (170.1 kg).

Install Front Idler

1. Fasten a hoist to the front idler (1). Put the front idler in position on the track
roller frame.

2. Install four bolts (5) that hold the front idler to the yoke.

3. Install bolts (2) on each side of the front idler. Shims (3) are to give a minimum
clearance of .030 - .075 in. (0.76 - 1.91 mm) between the yoke and plate (4).
Tighten bolts (2).

4. Put shims (6) and plate (7) in position on both sides of the front idlers.
NOTE: Shims (6) are to keep dimension (B) a distance of .030 .020 in. (0.76
0.51 mm).

5. Install strips (9), spacers (11) and bolts (10) that hold plates (7) in position.
6. Install guard (8) on both sides of the front idler.

Adjustment Of Front Idler

start by:
a) remove front idlers
1. The front idlers can be put from a "HIGH" to "LOW" position or a "LOW" to
"HIGH" position as follows:

a) Remove bolts (1) on both sides of the front idler. Lift collars (2) on both sides of
the front idler until bearings (3) can be turned.
b) Turn the bearings and shaft 180 until the lower area of the bearings are toward
the rear of the machine.
c) Fasten a hoist to the front idler. Turn the front idler 180 in the direction shown.
The front idler will be in the "HIGH" position. The bearing that was on the right side
of the front idler will be on the left side and the lower area of the bearing will be
toward the front of the machine.

d) Install bolts (1) in the position shown.

Disassemble Front Idlers

start by:
a) remove front idler
1. Remove the oil from the front idler. Install the plug back in the front idler to
prevent dirt from getting into the front idler.

2. Remove bolt (3) and collar (1) from bearing (2).

3. Remove bolt (4).

4. Remove the lock that holds the bearing on the shaft with a hammer and punch.
5. Remove bearing (2) from the front idler.

NOTE: If bearing (2) can not be removed from the front idler by hand, use tooling
(A) to remove the bearing.

6. Remove Duo-Cone seal (5) from the bearing.

7. Remove Duo-Cone seal (6) from the front idler.

NOTE: Put identification on the seals to prevent mixing at assembly.

8. Remove bolts (8).

9. Inspect seal (10) on the shaft. Install a new seal if it is necessary.
10. Turn the front idler over. Follow Steps 2 through 8 to disassemble the other
side of the front idler.
11. Remove bushings (9) and shaft (7) with a press.

12. Remove bearings (11) from bushings (13) with a press. Cut pins (12) even with
the face of the bushing. Make the face of the bushing smooth with a file.

Assemble Front Idlers

1. Put the oil holes in the bushings in alignment. Install bushing (1) in bushing (3)
with a press. Drill two holes .281 in. (7.14 mm) in diameter, 180 apart and .82 in.
(20.8 mm) deep through bushing (1) and into bushing (3). Do not drill the holes
through the lubrication grooves in bushing (1). Make the two holes larger with a
reamer. The holes must be .3052 in. .0003 in. (7.752 mm 0.008 mm) in
diameter and .75 in. (19.1 mm) deep. Make the holes larger again to a diameter
of .308 in. .001 in. (7.80 mm 0.03 mm) and .25 in. (6.4 mm) deep. Install two
new pins (2) which are .306 to .307 in. (7.77 mm to 7.80 mm) in diameter to a
depth of .030 in. (0.76 mm) below the outside surface of bushing (1).

NOTICE
Do not drill holes in the lubrication grooves in the bearings.

c) Install new pins (2) each housing even with the face of the bearing.
2. Inspect the seals on the bushings. Install new seals if necessary. Put clean SAE
30 oil on the seals and contact surfaces of the bushings.

3. Install one of the bushings in the front idler with tool (A) and a press. Install the
bolts in the bushing.

4. Turn the front idler over. Install shaft (4) in the bushing. Install the other bushing
with tool (A) and a press. Install the bolts in the bushing.

5. Install tool (B) and check the clearance between the shaft and bushings. The
clearance must be .020 .009 in. (0.51 0.23 mm).

6. Install the Duo-Cone seal in the housing with tool (C).

7. Install Duo-Cone seal in the bearing with tool (C).

NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be
clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact
surfaces of the metal seals.
8. Inspect the seal on the shaft. Install a new seal if necessary. Put clean SAE 30
oil on the seal before installation.

9. Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the contact surfaces of the shaft and
bearing. Install bearing (5) on the shaft. Make sure the groove on the shaft is in
alignment with the hole in the bearing.
10. Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the lock that holds the bearing to the
shaft. Install the lock in the bearing. Install the washer and bolt that holds the lock
in the bearing. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 40 lb.ft. (5.5 mkg). Hit the bolt with a
hammer and punch. Tighten the bolt again.
11. Turn the front idler over. Do Steps 6 through 9 to the opposite side of the idler.

12. Put the front idler in position so the shaft is in a horizontal position. Remove
plug (6) from the shaft. Install nozzle (D) and fill the front idler with the correct
amount of oil. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE.
