Pulse Oxy Meter

A flexible tape measure
AND Model UA 621 blood pressure monitor
Measuring cuffs for small, medium, and large arms

Procedure
1. Verify that the patient has not engaged in strenuous activity, exercise, or smoking for the past 30
minutes. Strenuous activity can result in significantly elevated blood pressures.
2. Sit the patient comfortably in a chair and wait for at least 5 minutes. (Measuring blood pressure
should never be performed while the patient is standing as inaccurate results will be reported). If
using the pharmacy counter, a taller bar stool will be necessary since a regular short stool is NOT
high enough to take a proper BP reading.
3. Rest the upper arm on the table so that it is at the same level as the heart (heart level). This is a
critical step and should NOT be overlooked.
4. Use the pulse-oxy meter to verify that the patients pulse has stabilized and is in the normal (range
60-100 BPM).
5. Verify that the patients feet are placed flat on the floor and that their back is straight and in the
upright position.
6. Measure the circumstance of the upper arm at the bicep level with a tape measure.
7. Choose the right cuff according to patients arm (examples below are for the AND UA model 621).
Use of a cuff too small or too large will result in an INACCURATE reading.
Small cuff: 17-22 cm
Medium cuff: 22-32 cm
Large cuff: 32-42 cm
8. Wrap the cuff around the upper arm about 1-2cm above the ante-cubital fossa (measure the size of
finger first if you want to use finger to do it; generally 1-finger diameter width is appropriate)
9. Rotate the patients hand on the arm being evaluated so that the palm is facing up towards the
ceiling. This will help the BP sensor to detect the pressure sounds more easily as the brachial artery
will not be covered by the bicep muscle (if the palm were facing downwards!).
10. Wash hands according to the SOP on hand washing Ask that the patient remain still and remain quiet
during the measurement process.
11. Press power on button.
12. Record the displayed measurement results in the patients record log/file.
13. Repeat measurements for the second time at a time interval of at least 5 minutes.
14. It should be noted that as of August 2014, the internationally accepted value of 140/90 mmHg is the
threshold for diagnosing hypertension.
15. Disinfect the machine using the VG SOP for disinfection of blood pressure devices.
16. Wash hands according to the SOP on hand washing.
