Pharmacy at a Glance
Pharmacy is the branch of medical science concerned with medicines, especially their manufacture,
properties, supply, effects and appropriate use, and of course peoples health. Pharmacists are
experts in the biology and chemistry of medicines. They know how drugs are created, their impact
on the human body, their formulation into effective medicines and their use in treating diseases.
They work closely with doctors to ensure patients receive maximum benefit from their medications.
The scope of pharmacy practice includes traditional roles, such as compounding and dispensing medications, as
well as more modern services related to patient care, including providing clinical services, reviewing medications
for safety and effectiveness, giving in-depth drug information and discovering and developing new drugs.
Due to the rapid growth of the healthcare system, the increasing aging population and the booming
pharmaceutical and biotech industries, there is an unprecedented demand for pharmacists today in Malaysia and
worldwide. This trend is expected to continue as scientific advances create new types of drugs; new
developments occur in genome research and medication distribution systems; sophisticated customers seek more
information about drugs; and pharmacists become more directly involved in patient care.

Career Prospects in Pharmacy

A pharmacy degree prepares graduates for a variety of career opportunities in areas ranging from community
practice to hospitals to academia and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies.
Upon graduation and registration with the Pharmacy Board of Malaysia and /or the General Pharmaceutical
Council (UK) a majority of pharmacists will go into community pharmacies, hospitals and managed care facilities,
the pharmaceutical industry, academia and government agencies. New opportunities also exist in research and
disease management, pharmacogenomics (the relationship between a persons genetic makeup and his or her
response to drug treatments), pharmacoeconomics (the cost and benefit analysis of different drug therapies) and
pharmacy informatics (the use of information technology to enhance patient care).
The long-term job outlook for pharmacy graduates is very positive because the number of job openings in the
field and the need to replace pharmacists who leave the profession or retire will continue to exceed the number
of graduates produced by universities globally. Besides the abundance of job opportunities, a pharmacy career
promises attractive salaries and benefits, and most importantly, the satisfaction of caring for people every day.

The Pharmacists Role

A pharmacist is required to :

Work closely with other health professionals to select appropriate drug

therapy for patients, evaluate the success of the therapy and ensure
patients understand their medications

Dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners

Educate and inform patients about the use and possible effects of
medications

Advise physicians and health practitioners on the selection, dosages,

interactions and effects of medications

Maintain confidential records of patients' medications to ensure their

safety and monitor their progress

Provide specialised disease management services for patients with

conditions, such as diabetes or asthma

Prepare drug therapies in areas such as oncology and parenteral

nutritional support

Where can pharmacy take you?

Pharmacists can be found working across many different sectors.
Whether they are working with patients, researching medicines or teaching
at a university, together they play an integral role in the health of a nation.
Here are some areas where pharmacists can apply their skills and knowledge.
