FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT

LESSON PLAN
Galatians 5:22-26

Karenzo Media
2012

Icebreaker 10 minutes
Students will get to know one another
Tape a piece of paper to each students back as they come in. Have them circulate
amongst one another and write one positive character trait about each person on their
piece of paper. Even if they dont know each other, they can think of one nice thing to
say about each person. Have students read their papers and make comments. Remind
students that everyone has positive traits and encourage them to continue to develop
them.
Discussion 10 minutes
How do we treat other people?
Supplies: one piece of rotten fruit, one piece of fresh fruit, flip chart or white board
Have the students gather around in a circle. Show them the rotten fruit and ask how
many would like to eat this fruit. Now show them the fresh fruit and ask the same
question. Give them a few moments to consider why they would not eat the bad fruit
and why they would prefer to eat the good fruit.
Ask the students to consider their peers at school. Can they distinguish good fruit from
bad fruit amongst their peers? Without naming names, ask them to point out what
characteristics they think make good fruit and which characteristics make them think of
bad fruit.
A. Make a chart on the board or flip chart that is divided into good and bad.
Write the students responses on the chart.
B. Ask the students to silently consider the list and honestly ask themselves which
column they think they fit in as of right now.

Reading 5 minutes
Read Scripture [Galatians 5:22-26]

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against
such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and
desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the
Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying
each other.

Reading Activity 15 minutes

Have the students gather in groups of two or three and make a chart on how we should
treat other people and things we can do that show we have a Christ like heart by using
the nine fruits of the spirit. You can copy the blank chart (see last page) and hand it out
to each group. Allow each group to share their charts with the class and discuss their
answers.

Wrap Up 5-10 minutes

Give each student the following handout to take away with them. If there is time left in
the class, ask them to answer the questions in a few sentences or take them home and
answer them. Encourage them to share their answers with their parents and friends.

Reflection on the Fruits of the Spirit

What You Should Aim For

To be recognized in school as the young adult who
people, especially your peers, can trust.
To be the young adults that even the least popular
student believes like you.

To be the young adult that examines your actions and

how they impact other kids before you take them.
1. What kind of person do you want to be?

2. Think about the kind of people you admire? What traits do they have?

3. Make a decision to be like that person [best example is Christ]
