ASSIGNMENT 1

DUE DATE: MONDAY, 04/01/2017, 4PM

Instructions: Solve the problems listed below. Provide all the solutions required and working
steps should be shown in detail. Mohr diagrams should be accurately drawn (not drafted) by
either manually using graph paper or computer generated. The Mohr diagrams should be clearly
labeled and complete.
1.) A prismatic bar is under an axial load, producing a compressive stress of 75 MPa on a
plane at an angle = 300 (Fig. 1). Determine the normal and shearing stresses on all faces
of an element at an angle of = 500.
(12 marks)

Fig. 1
2.) A cylindrical pipe of 160 mm outside diameter and 10 mm thickness, spirally welded at
an angle of = 400 with the axial (x) direction, is subjected to an axial compressive load
of P = 150 kN through the rigid end plates (Fig. 2). Determine the normal and shearing
stresses acting simultaneously in the plane of the weld.
(6 marks)

Fig. 2

3.) A 100 mm by 150 mm rectangular plate QABC is deformed into the shape shown by the
dashed lines in Fig. 3. All dimensions shown in the figure are in millimeters. Determine
at point Q:
a.) The strain components x, y and xy.
b.) The principal strains and the direction of the principal axes.
(10 marks)

Fig. 3

4.) The principal strains at a point are 1 = 400 and 2 = 200. Determine:
a.) The maximum shear strain and the direction along which it occurs and
b.) The strains in the directions at = 300 counter clockwise from the principal axes.
Solve the problem by using the formulas developed and check the results by
employing Mohrs circle.
(18 marks)

5.) A rosette consisting of 3 gages forming, respectively, angles of 1, 2 and 3 with the xaxis is attached to the free surface of machine components made of material with a given
Poissons ratio v = 0.29 and Modulus of elasticity E =300GPa as shown in Fig. 4. Gage
readings are: 1 = 40 10-6 mm/mm, 2 = 980 10-6 mm/mm 3 = 330 10-6 mm/mm.
(Take note that strain values given above are the gage readings and not principal strains).

Fig. 4
Based on Fig. 4 and given point Q, determine:
a.)
Normal strain and shear strain components, x, y, z and xy.
b.)
Magnitude and orientation of the maximum shear strain, max (determine
the orientation in degrees, measured from given state of strains).
c.)
Principal strain components, 1, 2, and 3.
d.)
Orientation of the principal strain plane (determine the orientation in
degrees, measured from given state of strains).
e.)
Draw 3 dimensional Mohr diagram and indicate the points X (given state
of strains), center, 1, 2, 3, and max together with their coordinate values.
Also indicate the orientation of max and orientation of the principal plane
(both measured from given state of strains (point X)).
f.)
Normal stress and shear stress components, x, y, z and xy.
g.)
Magnitude and orientation of the maximum shear stress, max (determine
the orientation in degrees, measured from given state of stresses).
h.)
Principal stress components, 1, 2, and 3.
i.)
Orientation of the principal stress plane (determine the orientation in
degrees, measured from given state of stresses).
j.)
Draw 3 dimensional Mohr diagram and indicate the points X (given state
of stresses), center, 1, 2, 3, and max together with their coordinate
values. Also indicate the orientation of max and orientation of the principal
plane (both measured from given state of strains (point X)).
(58 marks)

Remarks: You are allowed to form a group to solve the 5 problems above. Total number
of students in a group, n should be greater than or equals to 1 and less than or equals to 5
(1 n 5). You are allowed to form a group consisting of students from different lecture
groups. All the members within a particular group will be given same mark for the work
submitted. You are also allowed to solve the given problems alone (n = 1). You are
required to include a cover page for your submission with the information below:
1.) Title
2.) Group members names, ID numbers and lecture groups
3.) Submission date
4.) Due date
Your submission can be either handwritten or computer generated. Late submissions will
be penalized by deduction of marks (-5 marks for each subsequent day after the due date.
Maximum deduction = -20 marks). Very late submissions (submissions after 4 days from
the due date, including weekends and public holidays) will be given zero mark (-104
marks). Details:
