The rootballs on our caliper trees, as shown in the diagram to the right, are shaped like a flat-bottomed cone. The hole required for planting your tree
should be dug in this shape according to the measurements below.
Rootball measurements for Deciduous trees:
Across the Top
Deep
- 40mm & 50mm: 35 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 24 deep
- 60mm & 70mm: 40 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 31 deep
- 80mm, 90mm & 100mm: 44 to 46 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 30 deep
Rootball measurements for Spruce trees:
- 6 to 7 ft: 35 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 24 deep
- 8 to 9 ft: 44 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 31 deep
- 10 to 12 ft: 44 to 46 across the top, 24 across the bottom and 30 deep

place when damaging winds can blow away precious topsoil. Summer
mulch retains moisture and suppresses weed growth. Winter mulch
protects plant roots from extreme temperature fluctuations. Apply bark
mulch to a depth of 10cm (4 inches) and re-apply each spring and fall to
maintain this level. Avoid laying mulch so that it makes contact with the
tree or shrub, as it can cause the bark to rot.
Fertilize Newly planted trees and shrubs should be fertilized with
Phosphorus, shown as the high middle number on fertilizer products,
to develop strong roots. Established trees and shrubs benefit more
from an all-purpose fertilizer. Stop fertilizing with Nitrogen towards the
end of July to allow plants to harden off and go dormant before winter.
Choose the right plant material. If you are adventurous, it is fun to try a
less hardy plant in a sheltered location to see if you can push the limit.
You may be pleasantly surprised at how well it does. Ask our staff for
information on hardy plants for our region. Beautiful gardens thrive
here in spite of the challenging conditions we tackle and we have a wide
and varied selection of trees and shrubs to choose from that grow well
in our region.
In the areas with heavy clay soil, remove the top 12-18 inches of clay and
replace with loose amended soil. Common soil amendments include
compost, peatmoss and sand.
Compost breaks up clay particles, helps increase aeration, increases the
activity of micro-organisms, feeds earthworms, prevents soil erosion,
modifies pH and improves soil structure.
Peatmoss is very acidic which will help to lower pH of alkaline soil.
If adding sand, caution must be exercised. Some types of sand can create a
cement-like substance when mixed with clay. Sand used for amending soil
must be sharp or coarse like builders' sand.
Peatmoss mixed with compost makes a wonderful soil amendment. Work
this into your soil on a yearly basis to maintain a loose and crumbly soil that
any plant would want to sink its roots into.
