Abstract
In recent years, wireless communications systems are popular
not only for voice communication, but also for data communication. The performance of voice and data will be degraded
during wave propagation. This is called propagation fading.
The propagation fading will decrease the signal to noise ratio.
For smaller signal to noise ratio, the performances of communication range, BER (bit error rate), and data throughput
rate will also be degraded. In order to overcome these serious
effects of propagation fading, various kinds of reconfigurable antennas are developed for SDR (software defined radio)
communication systems. By reconfiguring the existing antenna
hardware to change the performance of antenna, the antenna
will be more powerful for the application in SDR communication system. The reconfigurable antennas are one of the
important parts in SDR communication system. By minor adjusting the reconfigurable antenna, the communication range,
lower BER, and higher data throughput rate can be highly
improved.
The reconfigurable antennas have several kinds of reconfigurable electrical performances. According to the electrical performances, the reconfigurable antennas are divided in pattern
reconfigurable antenna, polarization reconfigurable antenna,
and impedance (or frequency) reconfigurable antenna. All
these reconfigurable antennas are adaptive to the environmental condition to reduce the effects of propagation fading. The
pattern reconfigurable antenna is adaptive pattern with the
maximum signal to clutter ratio in receiver. The phased array antenna and the adaptive antenna are example of pattern reconfigurable antenna. The polarization direction may
be changed during wave propagation. It will also reduce the
signal to noise ratio in receiver. The change of polarization
during wave propagation is another propagation fading. It can
be improved by the polarization reconfigurable antenna. The
polarization reconfigurable antennas includes linear (vertical,
horizontal, or slant) and circular (right hand or left hand)
polarization to solve this fading problem. Another reconfigurable antenna is changing the impedance of the antenna in
desired frequency response. This is impedance or frequency
reconfigurable antenna.
In this talk, we will base on the requirement of communication system. Then various kinds of reconfigurable antennas
are used in SDR to improve the performance of communication. range, BER, and higher throughput rate. All the reconfigurable antennas are implemented, measured, and detail
discussed during the talk.
