High Temperature Procedures Drill out

Generic

Discuss these procedures with the company representative prior to

RIH. Carry out a pre-job meeting talk to inform all concerned of this
procedure.
The company representative MUST BE INFORMED, when hot hole procedures are
commenced, that the temperatures presented during the drilling process are
circulating temperatures measured at the directional node. The downhole tool
may be exposed to higher temperatures that are not transmitted realtime, or
recorded to the downhole memory, when the downhole tool is not powered up
due to a lack of flow. Temperature tabs that are located with the electronics of
each module, or sub, are used to determine the maximum temperature that the
downhole tool has been exposed too. These maximum reading temperature tabs
can only be evaluated at the INTEQ R&M facility and are used for calculating
damages to the downhole tool.
Procedure for drilling out of casing in a high temperature hole:
1. RIH to the bottom of the ? casing section (????? MD / ????? TVD). The bottom hole static
temperature at this depth should be ???F - as per information obtained from the well plan
(must be less than 280F if not see Procedure for Subsequent Trips)
2. Initial circulating time at casing should be ~one half an hour (1/2) prior to drilling ahead. At
this depth it should take at least 20-30 minutes to circulate from PIT to Bit.
3. If Mud Cooler/Chiller is in system, allow enough time for mud to cool to stabilization point
monitor decrease in temperature as transmitted from the downhole tool.
4. Drill ahead until transmitted temperature is reading 280F (benchmark temperature). Pull off
bottom and circulate until transmitted temperature has reduced significantly (at least 10
degrees).
5. If temperature cannot be reduced after ~45 minutes of circulating, or temperature returns to
280 deg after 10 minutes on bottom, raise benchmark temperature to 290F.
6. Drill ahead until transmitted temperature is reading 302F. Pull off bottom and circulate until
transmitted temperature has reduced significantly (at least 10 degrees).
7. If temperature cannot be reduced, after circulating off bottom at 302F - POOH.

Procedure for pulling out of the hole:

1. Because the maximum temperature measured by the downhole tool during drilling has
exceeded 280F static temperature, it will be necessary to continue to cool the tool on the
way out of the hole.
2. Before tripping out of hole, or before any short trip, circulate bottoms up before pulling the
first stand.
3. Pump out of the hole at full rate until the downhole tool reaches the depth equivalent to
280F.
4. At depth equivalent to280F POOH.
Note: The trip out procedure must be adhered to even if the downhole tool failed on bottom. The
reason for this is to preserve the tool electronics and to allow successful recovery of the FE data
from the downhole memory.

Procedure for subsequent trips in a high temperature hole:

1. RIH to the depth corresponding to 280F static temperature (benchmark temperature).
2. Initial circulating time should be ~one half an hour prior to tripping any additional pipe.
(At ????? MD / ????? TVD, it takes at least ~20-30 minutes to circulate from PIT to Bit).
3. If Mud Cooler/Chiller is in system, allow enough time for mud to cool to stabilization point
monitor decrease in temperature as transmitted from downhole tool.
4. From depth corresponding to benchmark temperature wash to bottom.
5. Drill ahead until transmitted temperature is reading 290F. Pull off bottom and circulate until
transmitted temperature has reduced significantly (at least 10 degrees).
6. If temperature cannot be reduced after ~45 minutes of circulating, or temperature returns to
290F after 10 minutes on bottom, raise benchmark temperature to 302 deg F.
7. Drill ahead until transmitted temperature is reading 302F. Pull off bottom and circulate until
transmitted temperature has reduced significantly (at least 10 degrees)
8. If temperature cannot be reduced, after circulating off bottom at 302F, POOH.

Notes and Recommendations:

In the event that it is planned for circulation to stop for a period of time greater than the
equivalent time necessary to make a connection, it will be necessary to pump out of the hole

until the downhole tool is at the depth equivalent to 280F the trip out procedure as
described above should apply.
In the event of a total pump failure and there is not any other means to circulate the mud,
then it would be necessary to immediately trip to the depth equivalent to 280F
If a pump fails and cannot be utilized while repairs are made, it is imperative circulation be
maximized with the remaining pump.
If mechanical failure causes all mud pumps to become inoperable, circulate using the
cementing unit.
If circulating temperature is more than 302F, an additional tool will not be run.
It would be advantageous to circulate until the temperature stabilizes at the lowest
temperature possible at a minimum of 2 separate depths (recommend 3) that are at least 200
ft apart. This information can be used to determine a circulating temperature gradient to
determine total depth possible to drill. If there is a significant change in mud weight, and
other factors that effect temperature, this will need to be repeated.
