Introduction
The Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies (LBC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the
National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA) to conduct a four-day exposure programme on Laurie
Bakers approach to architecture and building construction. This programme was started in the year 2012. The
students of architecture of different colleges from all over India are the participants of this programme.
The enthusiastic participation of the students had made this programme a great success and the LBC proposes to
continue the programme in the years to come.
Aim
To expose the students to Laurie Bakers approach to architecture and building construction so that the
alternatives in architecture that is cost effective, affordable, environment friendly and aesthetically appealing
building construction techniques can be transferred to new generation for sustainable habitat development.
Objectives
To conduct practical sessions to give experience in the different construction techniques which Baker
followed and advised.
To organize site visits to completed and ongoing project which are based on the cost effective building
technologies and Bakers construction approaches.
Course content:
The course is designed by incorporating lecture series, hands-on training, site visits and interactive session at
night. The four day programme has twenty eight hours categorized under three sessions.

The programme is arranged in two venues. The lecture series are conducted in Self Employed Womens
Association (SEWA Hall), adjacent to LBC campus and hands on training sessions in the LBC campus.

Hands on Training:
The students are given practical training in Random rubble masonry, Surface beam using Bamboo reinforcement ,
cob wall, brick masonry of rattrap bond wall construction, brick Jallis, arches and filler slab.
Site Visits:
The first site visit is organized to the campus of Centre for Developmental studies & The Loyola Chapel designed
by Laurie Baker and his master pieces.
The Karimadom colony , a slum development project as part of the Basic Services to Urban poor, JNNURM and
Kalladimukham Project as part of Rajiv Awas Yojana constructed by COSTFORD, for Thiruvananthapuram
Municipal corporation.
The participants will also get an opportunity to visit Institute of Social Entrepreneurs (IISE), now called Kanthari,
situated on the banks of Vellayani Lake, is a design marvel in more than one sense. Kanthari integrates many ecofriendly and energy-efficient features with in its three acre campus.
Visala: House of Ar. P.B. Sajan and Prof. Shailaja Nair situated at Thiruvananthapuram. The house has been
constructed with locally available materials such as mud, bamboo, rubble, and coconut tree trunk and is a
testimony of cost-effective, energy-saving and environmentally sustainable model. This house bagged the second
prize of the HUDCO Design Awards in the category Green Buildings in 2012.
Number of days of the workshop: Last year it was a 5-day workshop and the participants expressed their
inability to remain away from the classes for a longer period. Therefore, it was decided to have a 4-day
workshop. But the content will remain the same and LBC will accommodate the content in four days.
Schedule: There will be 18 batches of workshop spanning over a period Aug-Dec. The
tentative workshop dates are given below.Each slot will be filled on FIRST COME FIRST
SERVE basis.

Fee:
The workshop fee is Rs.5500/- per student (inclusive of 15% service tax, food, accommodation and local
transportation for field visits.). An advance registration fee of Rs.2500/- per student must be paid
through NEFT mode to get the workshop participation confirmed.No other payment modes are
acceptable. No registration will be confirmed unless the registration form is accompanied with NEFT payment
receipt. The remaining registration fee of Rs.3000/- shall be paid in cash on arrival at LBC office. All registration
forms should be routed through Mr. Sanjay Antony. The NASA India U-Sec of the institution or his representative
shall take initiative to make payment and complete the registration formalities in collaboration with Mr.Sanjay. It is
also suggested that the U-Sec may accompany the workshop participants to LBC. Also, USec or the Student
Representative should submit a bonafide certificate from the head of the Institution attached along
with the approved student list to LBC Office at the time of arrival.
