Rahu is not always malefic

Different Views
Rahu and Kethu have no size or shape or substances and they are only two celestial points in the sphere of Zodiac.
So they are called shadowy planets or Chaaya Graha. In most books of Hindu Astrology these "Nodes" are inherently
viewed as evil cosmic influences, and the influence of Rahu is comparable to Saturn and Kethu for Mars saying "Shani
Vat Raahu - Kuja Vat Kethu".
As the dragons head (North Node) and the dragon tails (South Node) of western astrological thought the two nodes
represent powerful psychic forces beyond our personal control and understanding as having something to do with
ones karma. In the Uranian astrological system of Germany, the nodes are interpreted as having a lot to do with
interpersonal relationships.
According to the Kalidasas Rahu/Kethu rules mentioned in the KP Reader II, page 315, Rahu or Ketu will act as a
strong agent to the planets to which they are conjoined. If they are not conjoined with any planet, then they give the
results of the planet which aspects them. Only when they are neither conjoined with, nor aspected by any planet,
they represent the lord of the house. (Uthrakalamrita -- Khanda VI Sloka 14 onwards) In addition to these rules the
star lord of Rahu/Kethu is also considered in KP.
Generally Rahu or Ketu is stronger than any planet. So, if Rahu or Ketu represent any significator planet, then
Rahu/Ketu should be given first preference as a significator in place of that significator planet.
Analysis of Example Charts
Not only adverse results but also beneficial outcomes have been found given by Rahu for many of the well known
characters in getting to their peak, as mentioned in the Skanda Purana that Rahu is instrumental in strengthening
ones power and converting even an enemy into a friend. This is an effort to verify some of those highly appraisable
results given by Rahu, based on notable charts as follows.
1. Sri Mahatma Gandhi
Born on Saturday, 02 Oct. 1869, 07.11.48 AM LMT, TZ 5.21 East, Long. 69:36 E/Lat. 21:38 N, Porbunder,
Gujarat, India, KPNA 21 56' 56", Asc. Libra 04 39'38", Bal. Dasa: Mercury 02 Y 06 M 07 D.
Rahu is tenanted in the 10th house, sign Cancer in conjunction with Moon, the cusp and sign lord. Rahu is in the star
of Saturn in 2 (Maraka/ house of wealth / getting family) and in the sub of Mars in Lagna Bhawa. According to the KP
principles, Rahu is stronger than Moon, here for the 10th house (name, fame).
Just after two days of the commencement of Moon Dasa- Rahu Bhukti period from 09 Sept. 1906, on 10 Sept. 1906
Gandhi addressed a mass meeting of Indians at Johannesburg, which took oath of passive resistance against newly
promulgated Transvaal Asiatic Law Amendment Ordinance. In early 1907 he wrote a series of articles on "Ethical
Religion" published in weekly Indian Opinion and later as a book in Marathi. In Rahu Bhukti he had achieved a
considerable public reputation not only among the Indians but also all over the World as a leader for freedom.
In 1915 during Mars Dasa, he came back to India from South Africa and joined the Congress movement as a leader
and could gather more supporters to Indian National Congress Party as his starting point of political carrier.
During Rahu Dasa (10.04.1922 to 10.04.1940), in 1924 September he started Satyagraha for the unity of Hindu and
Islam in India. In 1925 he founded All-India Spinner's Association. In 1930 he marched to Dandi Sea Beach breaking
the Salt Law, where he was arrested with his supporters but unconditionally released. In 1931 he participated in the
second round table conference in England as the sole representative of National Congress of India for freedom. In
1932 he won his demand regarding Harijans in India. Thus Mahatma Gandhi had gained success with name and fame
mainly during the Bhukti of Rahu which occupies 10th house in conjunction with 10th lord Moon and with their
respective star lord Saturn for common people and sub lord Mars for bravery and courage.

It is also noted that Gandhi had under gone so many difficulties too in the above periods, especially imprisonment
for 13 times from 1908 to 1942 by the British ruler. But most of those judgments were limited only to "punishment",
as he was released in each period within a short duration. During the 18 years period of Rahu Das, Mahatma Gandhi
was sentenced with imprisonment for three times i.e. on 05 may 1930, 04 Jan 1932 and 01 Aug 1933.
Here in the chart of Mahatma Gandhi, he had experienced more benefits than some unpleasant incidents during the
so called Paapa Grahas. If Rahu were a planet of wholly malefic in the 10th for political success with name and fame,
how did he play a crucial role in India for its freedom? How did he bear the iron core of determination to reach his
goal? Had he ever been in any distress of frustration? No, he became as an exemplary master politician beloved by
the millions of people all over the world. According to my limited experience and the KP research finding, no planet
is totally malefic or benefic.

Born on Wednesday, 31 March 1948, 12.53 PM, TZ 5:00 West, Lat. 38:53 N/ Long. 77:02 W,
Washington, District of Colombia, USA, KPNA 23 02' 40", Asc. Cancer 11 10' 09", Bal. Dasa: Kethu 01
Y 07 M 25 D.
Al Gore was the 45th Vice President of the United States for two terms from January 1993 to January 2001. In his
natal chart, Rahu is located in the 10th house, Aries sign, in the star of Venus, the lord of 11th house and posited in
the in 10th house but very close to 11th cusp. The sub lord of Rahu is Saturn in Lagna. Here the role of Saturn is also
to be well noted as the cuspal sub lord for a cluster of houses i.e. 4,5,6,10,11 & 12. Saturn, the representative of
common people. and aspecting Rahu in the 10th (name, fame) house. In addition Rahu is aspected by the 10th lord
Jupiter. See the clear all round repeated 10th house signification of Rahu by KP Rahu rules. The marvelous thing is
that the day he sat on the Vice President chair on 20 January 1993 while he was under the DBAS of Rahu - Rahu Rahu -Saturn.
For Al Gore Rahu Dasa was running from 25 Nov. 1992 to 25 Nov. 2010. The timeline of success in the political career
of Al Gore in the Rahu Dasa period is as given under:

An Inconvenient Truth
According to the traditional teachings Rahu is in an enemy camp, Aries/Mars. But in line with the Stellar Astrology, Al
Gore had gained his utmost success and popularity in the Rahu Dasa.

Another interesting birth chart with Rahu in 8th house is of Edgar Cayce, known as "The Sleeping Prophet", the
founder of the Association for Research and Enlightenment in the USA, who was popularized with his physic abilities
in hypnotic trance.
In his natal chart Rahu is closely conjoined with Mercury, Saturn and Venus in the 8th house (psychic ability,
occultism, mystery). Mercury (intelligence) is lord of 3 (communication),12 (spirituality, sleep) and the cuspal sub lord
of 1,3 cusps, having no planets in its stars. Saturn (philosophy) is lord of 7 (public reputation),8. Venus (arts and
crafts) is lord of 4,11 (success, gain and fulfillment of desires). Rahu is in the own star and sub of Sun in 9 (luck,

Only in his Rahu Dasa period (08 Oct 1910 to 08 Oct 1928) Cayce began giving readings in Hopkinsville as a "psychic
diagnostician", after receiving a great deal of publicity as a result of a New York Times article on his psychic powers
dated one day after the commencement of Rahu Dasa i.e. 9 Oct. 1910. It is an evidence of working of the Vimshottari

the 3 rules must agree for any earthquake and the last condition is that D.B.A must agree.
For any death in earthquakes:

Ve:9(4,11), star lord Me:8(3,12), sub lord Ra:4 aspt by Ma:2(5,10).
Venus signifies 3,8 & 12, along with 5,10, and is also in the ruling planets.
Conclusion:
There is a strong possibility for a big earthquake in the state of California during the period from
12/07/2012 to 02/1/2013. So the great American astrologer is right; she has also mentioned that it
could happen up to the year 2016 and it falls in Saturn Dasha period; time will tell the truth.

Orb Theory for Planets near the house cusps

Origin of Theory
1. Western Origin
Claudius Ptolemy gave the so-called five degree rule in his Tetrabiblos, a planet falling in the last 5 degrees of a
house is judged to be in the next house, and applied it only to certain houses for a specific purpose. His disciples
included all 12 houses in the rule. In William Lillys Christian Astrology , when a planet is within 5 degrees of the
following house, it is to count the next house. It is perhaps like aspects between planets, the planets have a few
degrees of orb and this puts it in conjunction with the following cusp.
2. Vedic Origin
In the Vedic and Nadi astrology, the following time frames and consequent approximate degrees, approximately
around 5 except for Moon, are attributed to different planets in transit which they tend to give the influence of next
sign in advance before the planet actually enters into the next sign:

In the example chart, Krishnamurti Padhdhati Vol. 2, 1966, Sagar Publications, page 281, Moon at 21 30 Gemini,
which is very near the 12th cusp, indicates life in a foreign place, and Moon is considered as if placed in the 12th
house, although it is physically located in the 11th house.
4. In the example chart, KP Reader IV , 1970, pages 107-108, the 7 th cusp sub lord Rahu at 13 09 Libra is physically

Different Opinions
In the example chart, K.P. & Astrology Year Book 2000 pages 81-83 and also 2003 page 46 (by T. Rajendra Kumar),

Jupiter at 10 16 Capricorn is actually in the 5 house but very close to the 6 cusp at 11 13 Capricorn, giving the

result of 6 house of service; similarly Saturn at 9 08 Gemini which is actually in the 10th house, giving the 11th
house results by being very near the 11th cusp at 11 35 Gemini. Also in the example charts of Times of Astrology
magazine it is noted that if a planet is within 1 or 2 behind the cusp of a house and no other planet is in the
following house, it gains the significance of the following house, e.g. Jupiter gains significance of the 6th house and
loses signification of the 5th house where Jupiter is actually located since there is no planet in the 6th house.
In the example chart, K.P. & Astrology Year Book 2005, pages 58-61 (by C.V. Tyagaraja Iyer), the 2n d cusp sub lord
Moon close to the 2nd cusp within 5 orb offered 2nd marriage to the native.
In experience of Anant Raichur as well as of Sunil Gondhalekar, when planets are close to a cusp, they give not only
results of the house they are in, but also predominantly of the house to which they are near, fixing the orb 3 20as
1/4 of a pada of the nakshatra, as an approximation. But it can be extended to 4-5, if needed especially for the fast
moving planets.
Chandrakant R. Bhatt - Nakshatra Chintamani: If a planet is within 5 of the cuspal degree of a house, it exerts its
influence on both the houses. However, the practical' application cannot be found in solved examples in his books.

K. Subramanium: Astrology for Beginner, Vol 3, page 355-358 - a planet 5 or 6 close to the next cusp may signify
the previous cusp; a planet 1 or 2 close to the next cusp having the same sub lord of the next cusp may signify the
next cusp.
In the chart of Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of England, born on October 13, 1925 at 9:00 AM, GMT, in
Grantham, England, 52n55, 0w39, Time zone GMT h0e, has Saturn at 10 Scorpio 43 close to her Ascendant at 15
Scorpio 16 appears on/in her Ascendant, not relating primarily to the 12th house. Saturn rules her 3rd house (mindset) and the British media named her "the iron lady", certainly a Saturnine description. Her Moon at 28 Leo 38 late
in the 9th house also relates into affairs of the 10th house (a take charge personality) at 3 Virgo 51. (Noel Tyl)
In the chart of Rolling Stones Rock legend, Mick Jagger, born on July 26, 1943, for the commonly used birth time
6:30 am D-BST, Time zone GDWT h2e (double war time), Dartford, England, 0e14, 51n27,

According to the Astrodienst Staff Writers (Readings through www.astro.com), any planet occupying a position near
the end of a house is interpreted as belonging to the next house. For example chart of Steve Jobs, born on 24 Feb
1955, 19:15 pm , San Francisco, CA (US), long: 122w25 lat: 37n47, his Uranus at Cancer 2408'06'' at the end of
10th house is interpreted in the next 11th house at Cancer 2428' 41. (Liz Greene)
For example chart, born on 28 Sep 2001, 11:42 am, Time zone 5 h west, Daylight Saving Time, 95w27, 30n19,
Uranus at Aquarius 2119'35 is technically near the end of 2nd house and is interpreted in the 3rd house beginning at
Aquarius 2227'24. Pluto at Sagittarius 1253'38 is technically near the end of 12th house and is interpreted in the 1st
house commencing at Sagittarius 1450'02. (Robert Hand) However, depending on orb, the Sun, which is 4 back

Carl Woebcke: You and the Universe - If the Sun is in the 3rd house and also within 3- 4 orb (depending on planet)
of the 4th house cusp, then its expression through the 4th fourth house is at least as strong as through the third; if its
orb is less than 1.5, it should be read as though it were in the 4th house and not in the 3rd house at all.
Michael McClain: If the planet is close enough to be considered in conjunction with the next house cusp, say within
around 2, the action of the planet will most likely be directed into the oncoming house.
Stephen Arroyo: Astrology, Karma, and Transformation - Any planet located within 4 of a house cusp can be
interpreted as belonging to, and concerning itself with the issues of both houses.
In the horoscope analysis of http://www.astrotheme.com , regarding precision, according to the tradition, a planet
near the beginning (called cuspide) of the next house (less than 4 degrees for the Ascendant and the Midheaven, and
less than 3 degrees for all other houses) belongs to this house in our texts.
Martin Bulgerin: As you move counter-clockwise from one house to the next, the new house's influence starts to
check in about 5 before the actual cusp position. Jeff Jowa also likes to use orb of about 5 with house cusps.
Barbara Lee: Much depends on how far in degree the planet is from the next house cusp. If, for instance, Mars at 24
Aries close to the 10th house cusp at 26 Aries, the planet, while technically in the 9th house will operate more like a
10th house comparative placement.
John Frawley: Sports Astrology - A planet conjunct the house cusp but technically in the preceding house, could be
seen as having power over the affairs of that house. So if Jupiter is 2 from the 7th house cusp, then it might be seen
as having power over the 7th.
Kevin B. Burk: Depending on which house system you use, a planet may fall in different houses. For natal
interpretations, a planet close to a house cusp, particularly when it is about to enter the next house, can often be
interpreted in terms of both houses; blending the interpretations of the houses are often both useful and appropriate
in these cases. In horary and predictive astrology, a planet within 34 degrees of a house cusp is usually interpreted
as being in the next house.

Zane B Stein: Traditionally, if a planet is in one house, but within five degrees of the cusp of the next house, it is read
in the following house. Thus, Neptune in the 3rd within 5 degrees of the 4th cusp would be read as a 4th house
influence. However, it has been my experience that this is an oversimplification, and that the planet is felt in both
houses, but has its strongest impact on the next house. Thus, you would feel Neptune in both houses, but the impact
would be strongest in the 4th.
Robert Wilkinson: Depending on which system(s) we use, we'll get a variety of points that mark the cusps of the
houses. But if it occupies a degree that puts it in one house in one system and an adjacent house in another system,
then that planetary function involves how those adjacent houses affect each other. Rather than being in one or the
other, it's actually in both simultaneously.
Donna Cunningham, How to Read your Astrology Chart: Instead of crisp dividing lines, there may be gray areas
shading gradually from one house into the other. What the interviews for any planet within five degrees of an
intermediate cusp clarify, as often as not, is that the planet on the cusp affects and is affected by the matters of both
houses.
Joanna Martine Woolfolk - The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need: If you were cusp born, you are under the
influence of both signs. However, much like being a traveler just leaving one country and crossing into another, you
must actually be in one country you cant be in two countries at the same time. One sign is always a stronger
influence, and that sign is almost invariably the sign that the Sun was actually in.
Jean Baptiste Morin: Astrlogia Gallica, Astrological Books: It is noted that the ancients determined the strength or
influence of a planet in a house is the same regardless of where the planet is placed in the house. This he regarded
as contrary to reason of the five degree rule. It is also argued that the houses do not begin five degrees before the
cusps because if that were true, the planet posited in that five-degree area would no longer have influence on the
preceding house.
Observation
There is the possibility of orb effect for a planet very near the next cusp to give the results of the next house
depending how tight is the orb. The modern tendency is to use small orbs from around 5-6 by J Mayo, and Maurice
Wemyss to about 3- 4 by DA Bradley and CEO Carter. (Geoffrey Dean: Recent Advances in Natal Astrology) and 12 by T. Rajendra Kumar, Michael McClain, K. Subramanium, Carl Woebcke etc. 1-2 to give the result of next house
only, and if the orb is larger than that the planet is supposed to give the results of the previous house only.
If a planet is supposed to be a significator of both previous and next houses, the result of the next house may not be
effective as the previous house is detrimental or Vyaya or negative to the matters of next house. (KP Reader III, KP
Reader IV, CR Bhatt's Nakshatra Chintamani).
The orb theory for planets near the house cusps is not a rule consistently applied in the KP Readers although the 3
20 orb theory has been found applied in KP practice to some extent. But the charts against the orb theory of planets
near the cusps have been noted in the KP articles and discussion forum.
It is open to further research on practical charts for or against the theory that a house begins, say 3 20 before the
next cusp. Whether to apply the orb theory or not is therefore up to the preference and experience of an astrologer.

Question: Is Saturn always malefic?

In the article on Saturn you are writing off the distress, difficulties and agony that a person like Sri Amitab Bachan,
Mr. Bush or Smt. Gandhi et.al. faced during Elenati Sani.
I wish to contradict with all humility that what we see from out side as Rosy for such high up on the pedastal people
is and may not be true !.The feel happy and being good factor is what one feels within and not what we appear to
reckon.
I am sure the great clenser Saturn certainly subjected them to difficulties to spend some of their Sanchit Karma.
Forgive me if I am wrong. But I am only trying to corroborate what the great sages like Parasara told us.
For the sake of emphasis I am placing in the concluding paragraph that I enjoyed and benefited from various other
articles that you published earlier in this great Ezine. This however is only my opinion and I may be wrong.
Answer: No planet is wholly benefic or malefic.
It is true that those notables got success by hard work under the Saturns pressure. Similarly Napoleon had also
fought sixty big battles and countless small ones, till nineteen horses had been killed under him, to be regarded as
one of the greatest military commanders of all time. Hitler had fought in the German army during the WWI, winning
the Iron Cross twice for bravery, till he was nearly blinded, to become a historic figure nearly a par with Caesar and
Napoleon from a homeless, lost person in Vienna for four miserable years.
The theme of articles on Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu etc. is that no planet is wholly benefic or malefic, which is not only the
KP research finding but also the modern trend of both East and West astrology.

did not consider Sun as being in 9th house as it is
within the 3.33 orb to 9th Cusp? Once you do that the
prediction of the job not being to full satisfaction because of influence of 8th house will not apply ? Can
you further your argument from this point of view and

I appreciate your thoughts regarding the article . I do
not believe in orbs and do not consider it as important .
If any planet is in 8th house and is near the 9th cusp
then what sort of effect will it give, whether it will give
effect of 9th house or 8th house is not conclusive. So i
took the placement of the planet. Also as I know the
client personally, she is doing the job but is not satisfied. She hopes to get a better job in future and hence
the job is only for short period. Hope I have cleared
your doubts.

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your letter making it abundantly clear on how you view the planetary positions.
From your reply I tend to believe in the method followed by the KP practitioners is correct as much as the
8th house influence is showing.
As to your counter question I wish to answer from the
sayings of Guruji that once a planet is very close to the
next house by orb, then it ceases to lose its identity
with the situate house and gives the following house
results. In your example the 9th.house.
An expert like you could perhaps not have objection to
try out a few cases and note the results. My intention is
only to try and keep the basics consistent.
