Abstract
This research work is mainly spotlight to prove and evaluate the performance of a novel three port converter by interfacing a
PV port, a battery port, and a load port simultaneously in a power system then a new three port converter named bidirectional
buck with buck boost converter(B4C) is proposed. The major benefit of the proposed converter topology is the single-stage
power conversion which improves the overall efficiency of the converter. The performance of the proposed system is simulated
in MATLAB and its usefulness based on overall component count, losses and efficiency is evaluated. Finally to confirm the best
of the proposed converter, it is compared with other conventional converters such as boost bidirectional buck converter (B3C),
conventional Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) and ZETA converter. The comparison results prove the
dynamic performance of the proposed topology.

INTRODUCTION

The fast change in global energy stress and the environmental problems caused by fossil fuels have resulted in the need of solar
energy which becomes a potential solution and one among the most accepted renewable energy sources. Solar power is utilized
in areas where standard power supply is not available. The recent tendency is to focus on the PV battery powered backup
system[11] in order to meet the required load demand. In such cases, an efficient converter is necessary to maintain the power
demand within the limit of the maximum availability and also to prevent other failures. Onwuchekwa & Kwasinski [10]
presented a new, and simple approach based on buck-boost converter topology. But, the proposed converter has a non-uniform
power flow path between battery and load port when the battery is connected for charging and discharging. So, this system is
not appropriate for a PV-battery backup structure. Chen & Yen-Mo et al. [2] presented a novel boost converter with high
voltage gain based on the technique of three stable communication cell. Hence, by implementing this concept a DC bus along
with a PV panel array is used. This permits the batteries to charge simultaneously based on the intensity of solar radiation. But
it was found that the design of proposed system was difficult due to more number of semiconductor power devices used in the
system. The current conduction losses occurring during battery charging and discharging are more and hence the attainment of
higher efficiency is difficult. To diminish these problems,[15] a novel single stage three port DC/DC converter named boost
bidirectional buck with buck boost converter (B4C) is proposed. Then the proposed topology is used for interfacing a battery
port, a PV port and a load port simultaneously in a power system. The dynamic performance of B4C is evaluated based on three
domain distribution control method
II. PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
The proposed B4C schematic diagram is given in Fig 1. It primarily consists of boost converter and bidirectional buck with buck
boost converter (B3C). Here, the input inductor (L1 ), diode (D1 ) and switch (S1 ) (boost converter) is utilized for extracting the
maximum power from PV panel by making use of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm[7].
In addition, B4C arrangement comprising of diode (D2 ), buck boost inductor (L2 ), switch (S2 ), buck inductor (L3 ), standalone
battery powered backup supply and output capacitor (C0 ).Here, B4C is engaged for maintaining the constant output voltage (VL )
arising due to mismatch between the production and demand. When the demand goes beyond than generation, (VL ) drops from its
reference value, subsequently battery will discharge in order to provide for the additional demand. Just like that, when the
demand is less than generation, (VL ) increases over its reference value, and then consequently the battery will charge in order to
absorb the additional power. Buckboost converter is utilized as a bidirectional converter for the purpose of enabling the
bidirectional power flow between load and battery [12].

The main achievements of this proposed B4C are as given: 1) Current is in discontinuous conduction mode for civilizing the
reliability of the battery. 2) Due to the single-stage power conversion the efficacy of the converter gets highly superior. 3) For
decreasing the current conduction losses the converter is designed with least number of components [5,6]

III. SIMULATION OF PROPOSED CONVERTER B4C

The performance of the proposed B4C is modelled in a matlab / Simulink environment making use of the Sim Power-System
Toolbox. The proposed converter performance is analyzed under dynamic solar irradiation conditions [13]. Parameters like Panel
power(PPV ), Load power(PL ), Battery power(PBAT ), Load voltage(VL ), then (iL1 ), (iL2 )and(iL3 )current flowing through the
inductorsL1, L2 L3 respectively, and then finally state of charge in the battery (SOC) of the proposed converter are assessed in
order to show its proper functioning. The converter input and output specifications employed for the simulations are provided in
Table 1.

IV. COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF B4C

The proposed converter B4C is compared with other conventional converters such as boost bidirectional buck converter (B3C),
conventional Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) and ZETA converter [9] in conditions of efficiency, minimal
number of power devices used and current conduction losses. The comparative analysis is indicated in Table 2 . From the Table
2, it is obvious that the proposed B4C performance is better in terms of efficiency, component count and losses, when compared
with other conventional converters [1,3].

V. CONCLUSION
This research work presents a comparative performance analysis of a novel three port converter B4C, to prove and evaluate the
dynamic performance of the proposed system. The proposed topology produces enhanced performance in component count,
efficiency and average current conduction losses when compared with other conventional converters and it is evident that the
proposed B4C performance is superior when compared with other conventional converters. The proposed topology can be
applied in several applications such as PV powered backup system, electric vehicles, street light, micro inverter system, and so
on. Applying the above concept to PV storage systems is our future work.
