Foreign Policy Blogs. Foreign Policy Association, 24 June 2007. Web. 15 Nov. 2016.

In this article, Clifford explains how the lack of educational opportunities for many children
throughout the world isnt only hurting their future, but the future generations of America as
well. After reviewing the statistics from the Global Fund for Children, she noticed that one in
every five children arent enrolled in school and of those many dont even make it farther than
fifth grade. Throughout the article, Clifford points out that not being able to provide educational
opportunities for children across America just recreates the same cycle that their parents went
through and the same generation that continues to live a life in poverty because they dont have a
job that pays enough to live a better life. She then goes on to argue that one of the reasons why
many children dont attend school especially ones in the poorest countries is because they are
needed to work and provide for their families. The article being able to contribute to the reasons
why this issue is need of a solution and giving an overview of how the future could look life if
we dont educate the leaders of tomorrow is information that helps me expand on the type of
educational areas I should focus on more like reading and writing.

Lindsey, Kevin. "Child Poverty and Homelessness Affect Education | First Focus." First
Focus. N.p., 24 Sept. 2014. Web. 15 Nov. 2016.

In the article by Kevin Lindsey he explains that children of color are the ones to face more a
life in poverty and having it affect their education. After viewing how certain programs like the
Child Tax Credit and the Education for Homeless Children and Youth have helped either in a
good or bad way, he examines how most of the children end up facing any type of challenge in
their life just due to a life in poverty. Overall, Lindsey explains how children of color are the less
fortunate ones that end up receiving an education that is not rigorous compared to white children
who attend schools that provide teachers with greater knowledge. As well, she explains how the
rate of homeless children is still increasing and many of them end up dropping out of school due
to experiencing instability in their life. The information provided from the article enhances my
project because its an issue that needs to be addressed therefore the rate of homeless children
doesnt keep rising and children of color dont feel that they arent equally given the same
opportunity as other children around them. Given the information, I am now more concerned of
helping children of color because I believe that even though many of them do live a life in
poverty, they shouldnt have to put their education in jeopardy.

"Education Department Releases Guidance on Homeless Children and Youth." U.S.
Department of Education. N.p., 27 July 2016. Web. 15 Nov. 2016.
http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/
The article discussed that the U.S. Department of Education has created a guidance for
states and school districts to follow to insure that homeless children are better protected and
served. With the opinions given from members of the U.S. Department of Education we can
conclude that most agree that homeless children are their number one priority because they need
to make sure that the children are able to overcome the obstacles they face in order to succeed in
their future. The U.S. Department of Education argues throughout the article that the new
guidelines being provided will ensure that homeless students are better assisted to make sure they
dont continue experiencing challenges in both their academic and social environments.
Additionally, they will provide all students with different types of services that will equip them
with the proper skills needed to highly succeed in the future and live a life of a middle class
family. The information provided ensured me that there is people and organizations that are
fighting for a solution to make sure that homeless children are receiving the proper education and
skills to live a better life which adds on to my background research on finding organizations that
Riverside has in order to make my capstone experience more crucial.

Hart, Lucy. "Poverty & Illiteracy in Schools." Education - Seattle PI. Hearst Seattle
Media, 24 May 2012. Web. 16 Nov. 2016.
http://education.seattlepi.com/poverty-illiteracy-schools-2334.html
In the article, Hart explains how poverty is a big threat to the lives of children because not
only does it affect them mentally, but it also affects their education which is important for them
to succeed in the future. Knowing from the National Center for Youth that there is around 22
percent of children in America that are living in poverty, Hart examines the disadvantages that
those children face in their education as well as how their future is affected. Hart first explains
how children in poverty not only are receiving education from teachers that have no experience
in how to deal with these types of children which leads to weak study habits and self-discipline,
but also have to face the fact of having lower vocabulary skills due to not having books at home.
In addition, these children are the ones to most likely drop out of college their freshman year due
to low grades because they were never provided with good resources during high school because
they had to attend a school that was also in a state of poverty. New ideas have been brought to
my attention with the information provided and that is, to strictly focus more on providing the
children with the necessary items such as books, supplies, and probably an electronic as well
where they can improve on educational skills since they dont have the opportunity like others.

McLaughlin, Lacey. "The Poverty-Crime Connection." The Poverty-Crime Connection |
Jackson Free Press. Jackson Free Press, 19 Oct. 2011. Web. 18 Nov. 2016.
http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2011/oct/19/the-poverty-crimeconnection/
In the article by Lacey McLaughlin she explains how poverty in the lives of children not only
affect their education, but also makes them get more involved in criminal activities. After
viewing studies, other articles, and the Childrens Defense Fund, she was able to view the
different aspects that an individual faces just due having to live in poverty and not having the
opportunity to have what you want. McLaughlin discusses throughout the article how lowincome families and African-American communities are the one that tend to be more involved in
criminal activities because they dont have enough money to have what they need, so therefore
they need to get it from other people when they get the chance. Also, she explains how these type
of people will never be able to break the cycle of being involved in criminal activity because
once they get caught they will never be trusted to be employed. This article enhances my project
because I need to make sure that I am going to make a change in the lives of these children to
lead them to the right direction that way they wont have to continue the criminal activity cycle
that wont get them anywhere, but with a bit of help in their education they wont have to
experience that.
