to love
God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We strive to welcome everyone, and work to affirm the worth,
dignity, and gifts of every person as a beloved child of God.
If you are a visitor today, we are especially glad youre here! It is our hope that you will feel welcome here, and that
you will engage with the service to whatever degree you are comfortable. All of the hymns, prayers, responses and
other various directions are printed in this booklet, so you wont need to worry about finding elements of the service
in various books. Everything you need to participate is included in this booklet.
Children are absolutely welcome at St. Michaels. We are grateful for the spirit and joy of young people, and parents
neednt worry if a little one becomes restless during the service. There are accessible restrooms on this floor as well as
the lower level. Please know that the ushers are here to help if you happen to need anything.
The celebration of Holy Communion is the central focus of our worship practice, and we hope that you will
participate if you feel so inclined. At St. Michaels, we believe that the Eucharistic (literally thanksgiving) Table at
which we gather belongs to Jesus, not us; and it is he who invites you to the banquet. No one has too many doubts, or
too few beliefs. All who are drawn to Christ are welcome to receive the bread and the wine. If you prefer a blessing,
please indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest so that the clergy know of your preference.
The Feast of The Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ (alternatively, the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles) is a principal
feast of the Church that is observed in both the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western apostolic traditions (including the Roman
Catholic, Lutheran, and other mainline churches which observe a liturgical calendar year.) The Epiphany marks the end of the
season of Christmas, which occupies the twelve calendar days from the Feast of the Nativity onward. The thirteenth day after
the Nativity is January 6th, but we have moved the celebration of the Feast one day for this special occasion, with the Bishops
permission.
Epiphany is a Greek word meaning manifestation or appearing. At the Feast of the Epiphany we celebrate Jesus being
made manifest or appearing as Christ. Traditionally, there are several specific manifestation accounts in scripture which are
celebrated on this feast day. The most widely celebrated manifestation of Christ on this feast daythe one that has been
historically celebrated by Christian churches in the West, and the one we will observe todayis Jesus revealed as Christ to the
three wise sages from the East (or, Magi) who followed the Star of Bethlehem at Jesus birth.
Today, we will also witness the Ordination of a Deacon. Deacons are members of one of three distinct orders of ordained
ministry, along with bishops and presbyters (or priests). In the Episcopal Church a deacon exercises "a special ministry of
servanthood" directly under the deacon's bishop, serving all people and especially those in need (BCP, p. 543). This definition
reflects the practice of the early church, in which deacons were ordained "not to the priesthood but to the servanthood
[diakonia, ministry] of the bishop" (Hippolytus, Apostolic Tradition). In the ancient Greek-speaking world the term diakonos
meant an intermediary who acted or spoke for a superior.
Christian deacons were agents of the bishop, often with oversight of charity. Since ancient times the liturgical functions of
deacons have suggested the activity of angels. As they proclaim the gospel, lead intercessions, wait at the Eucharistic table, and
direct the order of the assembly, deacons act as sacred messengers, agents, and attendants. The revival of the order of deacons
in the twentieth century has emphasized social care and service. Many bishops in the Episcopal Church expect their deacons to
promote care of the needy outside the church.
In addition to those ordained deacon as a permanent vocation, there are also "transitional deacons" who are ordained deacon
as a preliminary step toward ordination as a priest. It is in this tradition that we celebrate a rite of ordination todayPauls
discerned calling is to the priesthood, and the transitional diaconate is one part of his preparation. God willing, he hopes to be
ordained as a priest later in 2017.
Choral Introit
Stay with us, Lord Jesus, stay with us.
Stay with us, it soon is evening.
Stay with us, Lord Jesus, stay with us,
It soon is evening, and night is falling.
Opening Acclamation
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Hymn 381 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness (Ton-y-Botel)
Isaiah 60:1-6
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the
earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you.
Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around;
they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried
on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance
of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover
you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and
frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

Ephesians 3:1-12
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentilesfor surely you have
already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known
to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my
understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind,
as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow
heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I
have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power.
Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the
boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who
created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to
the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has
carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in
him.

During the hymn, the Gospel procession forms at the altar, and proceeds to the center of the congregation. The people turn to face the
deacon and the Gospel book. The custom at the announcement of the gospel is to make a small sign of the cross with the thumb on
forehead, lips, and chest, signifying our intention to hold the Word of God in our minds, in our speaking, and in our hearts.

The Presentation
Presenters
Thomas, Bishop in the Church of God, on behalf of the clergy and people of the Episcopal Church in Vermont,
we present to you Paul Benjamin Moberly, to be ordained a transitional deacon in Christs holy catholic Church,
and continue his preparation for ordination as presbyter.
Bishop
Has he been selected in accordance with the canons of this Church? And do you believe his manner of life to be
suitable to the exercise of this ministry?
Presenters
We certify to you that he has satisfied the requirements of the canons, and we believe him qualified to this order.
Bishop
(Addressing the ordinand) Paul, will you be loyal to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of Christ as this church
has received them? And will you, in accordance with the canons of this Church, obey your bishop and other
ministers who may have authority over you and your work?
Ordinand
I am willing and ready to do so; and I solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New
Testaments to be the Word of God and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to
conform to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church.
The ordinand signs the above Declaration in the sight of all present.
The people stand.
Bishop
Dear friends in Christ, you know the importance of this ministry, and the weight of your responsibility in
presenting Paul Moberly for ordination to the sacred order of deacons, as he continues his preparation for
ordination as a priest. Therefore, if any of you know any impediment or crime because of which we should not
proceed, come forward now and make it known.

The Examination
All are seated except the ordinand, who stands before the Bishop. The Bishop addresses the ordinand as follows
Bishop
My brother, every Christian is called to follow Jesus Christ, serving God the Father, through the power of the
Holy Spirit. God calls you now to a special ministry of servanthood directly under your bishop. In the name of
Jesus Christ, you are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely.
As a deacon in the Church, you are to study the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model
your life upon them. You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those
among whom you live, and work, and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes
of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of Gods Word and
Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties as assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and
teaching are to show Christs people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself.

Bishop

servant, and humbled himself, becoming obedient even to death on the cross. We praise you have highly exalted
him, and made him Lord of all; and that, through, we know that whoever would be great must be servant of all.
We praise you for the many ministries in your Church, and for calling this your servant to the order of deacons.
Here the Bishop lays hands upon the head of the ordinand, and prays
Therefore, Father, through Jesus Christ your Son, give your Holy Spirit to Paul; fill him with grace and power,
and make him a deacon in your Church.
Amen.

Hymn 764
Taste and see, the goodness of the Lord (Taste and See)
And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift
for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring the fulfillment the sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he
loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do
this for the remembrance of me.
Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christs death and his descent among the dead,
proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts
you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.
People
Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying
them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of
your Son Jesus Christ.
Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of
your Name.
Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard
its faith, and preserve it in peace.
And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, matriarchs, prophets, apostles, and
martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory
through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit
