faces were always different: some freckled, some haloed with

cropped strands of hair, and some adorned with bright eyes. Several were
peppy juniors, but most were veteran seniors, with the occasional sophomore
sprinkled in. Some had deep voices, and some voices floated so high that
they appeared to lift tired heads off of desks. Sometimes the hosts were as
sharp as needles, emulating seasoned journalists. Others elicited playful
giggles from classes across campus. Good morning and welcome to
MCTV the first sophomore to appear on MCTV, Brayden Cargile (10th)
spouted. An array of student voices repeated those words each morning,
before launching into the segment, Today in History.
When the student reporters traipsed into the library, they swiftly turned
into the little hallway to the right by several low shelves. Few glanced into
the little room at the very end. On a certain Tuesday, that room was abuzz.
Laura Isbell, the Broadcast Journalism instructor, sat behind a large television
with McRae Clay (12th) carefully preparing for the morning's broadcast. "I
chose MCTV because it was a fun class to do with my friends, McRae wrote
later. And Im interested in going into communications.
To the right of the pair, a black camera stood tall. If one were to peer into
that cameras viewfinder, one would have seen Grace Post (11th) reviewing
her lines for the broadcast, while Samantha Moore (12th) waited her turn
to do the same. Just out of the cameras line of sight sat Sidney Frazier (11th),
the days teleprompter, clicking through Graces lines. The bell rang, and a
few minutes later, it was go time. The days broadcast had begun.
Most remember their sophomore year, when they first watched MCTV,
amused by the antics that they later came to appreciate. Among antics,
however, the anchors always managed to remind the students of a significant
historical event, reveal the word of the day, and rattle off the announcements.
Recently, we believed the cameras were off, but they werent, so I was on
the air making strange faces, and laughing, Deshara Thomas (11th) recalled.
Once I found out, I tried to smile, but everyone was laughing.
MCTV was not all fun and games. This year the broadcast team stepped
up their game, producing sleek videos to celebrate the football teams first
home game. Dramatic black and white footage captured the intensity of the
game and its pep rally. The following week, a short, stop motion video
portraying a teddy bears journey through the school appeared on air.
Changing the channels vibe was an apparent theme for the MCTV team. I
was interested in contributing fresh new ideas for videos for MCTV, Sidney
Frazier (11th) said. I plan to become a better announcer.
Frazier had plenty of time to do so, as the year was only just beginning.
MCTVs audience waited for more sports videos and Jag Stars, new words
and old facts. Necks craned to catch a glimpse of the televisions each morning
and teachers hushed their classes to hear the anchors voices. The trend
continued throughout the year. As an essential part of the Madison Central
experience, MCTV was there to stay.
