Reading

Math

In Readers Workshop this week, we continued

reading nonfiction, remembering to take sneak
peaks and study the words and pictures on each
page. We also worked on reassessing students
reading levels to create new guided reading groups
and collect information for progress reports.

This week, we wrapped up our money unit. We

practiced counting up collections of nickels and
pennies and playing money games with friends to
practice our skills. This week, first graders also
practiced writing their numbers 1-120 and
completed addition and subtraction timed tests.

Writers Workshop

Social Emotional Learning

In Writers Workshop, first

graders worked on showing
their sentence writing and COPS
skills. We completed many
review activities and
assessments where first
graders corrected sentences,
wrote sentences with trick
words, and even completed
dictation activities. First graders have made so
much progress with their writing since the beginning
of the year! We are continuing to focus on COPS in
the classroom to encourage first graders to more
consistently include capitals and punctuation in their
writing.

This week, the Second Step lesson focused on

communicating your feelings. First graders learned
that when they are feeling sad, happy, frustrated,
etc. they can tell a grownup they trust about what
happened and how they feel. We practiced naming
emotions and also brainstormed a list of trusted
adults in school and at home.

Fundations
This week in Fundations, first graders practiced
spelling and reading the 36 trick words we have
learned since the beginning of the year. Thank you
for practicing these words at home for homework
this week. Please continue
practicing these words and new
trick words we learn during our
Fundations units. On Friday, first
graders took a trick word
assessment to reveal words they
have mastered as well as words
they are still working on learning.

Social Studies
This week, first graders learned
about Martin Luther King, Jr.
We read a Scholastic News and
learned that we can watch
videos, listen to his speeches,
read what he wrote, and look at
pictures of him to learn about
his life. First graders also
learned about Martins dream
of equality and respect and thought about their own
dreams for the world.
