Brief explanation: These prayers are chanted before lighting the lamp. Light is considered a symbol of auspiciousness, prosperity,
and abundance in many cultures. Light brings with it brightness, but how does it destroy the intellects enemy? The intellects
enemy is ignorance, which is likened to darkness. Light removes the darkness and makes it possible to see things clearly.

ARJUNA SAID:
In this manner, (there are) devotees who, constantly committed, meditate upon you and also those who seek you as one
who is not subject to decline and not available for objectification. Among them, who are the greatest knowers of yoga?
SRI BHAGAVAN UVACHA

MA-YYAA-VE-SYA MA-NO YE MAAM, NI-TYA YUK-TAA UPAA-SA-TE,

SHRA-DDA-YAA PA-RA-YO-PE-TAA-HA, TE ME YUK-TA TA MAA MA-TAA-HA
THE BLESSED LORD SAID:
Endowed with unflinching faith, their minds committed to me, being ever united (with me), those who meditate upon me
are the most exalted this my vision.

But those who worship the indescribable, all-pervading, inconceivable, immutable, constant, eternal, impersonal absolute
devoid of perceptible form and attributes; completely controlling all the senses with spiritual intelligence equally
disposed to everything and dedicated to the welfare of all living entities; they certainly also achieve Me.

KLE-SHO ADHI-KA-TA-RAH TE-SHAAM AVYA-KTAA-SA-KTA CHE-TA-SAAM

AVYA-KTA HI GA-TIR DUH-KHAM DE-HA-VAD-BHIR AVAA-PYA-TE
The affliction is greater still for those whose minds are committed to what cannot be objectified because an end which
cannot be objectified is reached with difficulty by those who are identified with the body.

YE TU SAR-VAA-NI KAR-MAA-NI MA-YI SAN-NYA-SYA MAT-PA-RAAH

ANAN-YE-NAI-VA YO-GENA MAAM DHYAA-YAN-TA UPAA-SA-TE
However, those meditators for whom I am the ultimate end, giving up all actions to me, meditate upon me with a
commitment in which there is indeed no other.

BHA-VAA-MI NA-CHI-RAAT- PAAR-THA MA-YYAA-VE-SHI-TA CHE-TA-SAAM

with death.

NI-VA-SI-SYA-SI MA-YYE-VA ATHA OOR-DH-VAM NA SAM-SHA-YAH

will abide in me alone.

ATHA CHI-TTAM SA-MAA-DHAA-TUM NA SHA-KNO-SI MA-YI STI-THAM

ABHYAA-SA YO-GE-NA TA-THO MA-M I-CCHAAP-TUM DHA-NAN-JA-YA
Then, (if) you are not able to absorb your mind steadily in me, then through the practice of yoga may you see to reach me, Arjuna.

ABHYAA-SE-PYA ASA-MAR-THO-SI MA-TKAR-MA PA-RA-MO BHA-VA

MA-DAR-THA-MA-PI KAR-MAA-NI KUR-VA-NI SI-DDHIM AVAA-PYA-SI
Even if you do not have the capacity for the practice (of this yoga), may you become one for whom action dedicated
to me is paramount. Even doing actions for all sake you will gain success.

ATHAI-TAD APYA ASHAK-TO-SI KAR-TUM MAD-YO-GAM AA-SHRI-TAH

SAR-VA KAR-MA PHA-LA TYAA-GAM TA-TAH KU-RU YA-TAA-TMA-VAAN
Then, even if you are not able to do this, being one whose practice/commitment is dedicating all action to me, then being
one whose mind is disciplined give up the results of all actions (to me)

Knowledge is better indeed than the practice of yoga; meditation is superior to knowledge; renunciation of the results of
actions (is better) than meditation. Because of renunciation (there is) peace immediately.

THE NATIONAL SONG OF INDIA

The song Vande Matharam, composed by Bankimchandra Chatterji, was a source of inspiration
to the people in their struggles for freedom. The first political session when it was sung was the
1896 session of the Indian National Congress. The following is the text of its first stanza:
Van-de Maa-tha-ram......
Su-ja-lam Su-pa-laam Ma-la-ya-ja Shee-tha-laam
Sa-sya Shyaa-ma-laam Maa-tha-ram
Van-de Maa-tha-ram.....
Shu-bhra Jyo-tsna Pu-la-ki-tha Yaa-mi-neem
Pu-lla Ku-su-mi-tha Dru-ma-da-la Sho-bhi-neem
Su-haa-si-neem Su-ma-dhu-ra Bhaa-shi-neem
Su-kha-daam Va-ra-daam Maa-tha-ram
Van-de Maa-tha-ram......
Meaning:
I bow to thee, mother
richly-watered, richly-fruited,
cool with the winds of the south, dark with the
crops of the harvests, the Mother!
Her nights rejoicing in the glory of the moonlight,
her lands clothed beautifully with her trees in
flowering bloom,
sweet of laughter, sweet of speech,
the Mother, giver of boons, giver of bliss.

Thava shubha aashish maange
Gaahe thava jaya-gaatha

Jaya he, jaya he, jaya he
Jaya jaya jaya, jaya he !
Meaning

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,

Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
Mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by
The waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India's destiny,
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

KYAA LAA-GE ME-RA. OM JAYA......
My body, mind and perperty, everything belongs to you, I am offering all this to you because nothing is really mine.
Will we be able to sing the last verse sincerely? Do we really believe that everything that we have truly belongs to the Lord?
Even if we believe the above, are we ready to offer to Him all that He has provided for us? I know that when I sing the last verse,
I say an additional silent prayer, asking the Lord, to grant me the faith and conviction, that what I am singing I, truly come to feel.
